The concept of wasatiyyah or moderation is appropriate to be highlighted and practiced in Thai society to curb extremist activities in all matters. Even though some negative perceptions were voiced by a few parties, but the actual intentions could result in a decline of racial strains, as being moderate has been the practice of the Malay community and its leaders for ages. In fact, this approach has contributed to the success of the Malay community in the Deep South in securing the Malay indentity from their Buddhist neighburs in the country, without having to resort to spilling a lot of blood. Based on previous research, it was observed that the concept of wasatiyyah had a great influence on the Malays, as it had a strong link with the Islamic values that have been embedded in the Malay community. The Islamic values are the main elements that shape the Malays’ conduct, and it is the results of interaction with social norms, for it has bred certain social values that include compromise, modesty, respect and cooperation as transpired when Malays interact among themselves or with other communities. The main goal for the institution to maintain peace and harmony in the society. Based on textual analysis, the study determines that the concept of wasatiyyah concept or moderation is part of the social values borne out of the Malays’ values based on Islamic teachings. Hence, the question is, to what extent does the wasatiyyah concept implemented in the institute. In order to answer the question above, this study has set two main objectives. First, to identify the wasatiyyah concept in Islamic law; and second, to analyse its implementation in the institude. The qualitative study in the form of exploratory and descriptive approach used the content analysis method. The content analysis method was used to identify and analyse the wasatiyyah concept in Islamic law and also to analyse the implementation of the wasatiyyah concept in the institute.

Abstract

During its development, Islamic boarding schools carried out educational transformation by compromising with the establishment of formal education and integrating religious knowledge and science. Apart from that, Islamic boarding schools are experiencing rapid development, one of which is the existence of virtual Islamic boarding schools. The research method used is a systematic literature review (SLR). In the literature selection process, researchers apply five provisions, first; The papers that were analyzed were only papers from journal articles (published), not including book reviews, conferences, proceedings, theses, and dissertations. Second, the selection of articles is limited to the last ten years 2014-2024. Third, the database used in the article search process is a global database, namely Scopus and Taylor and Francis. Fourth, at the article search stage, researchers use third-party applications, namely publish or publish and visualize using Vos Viewer. Fifth, in the search the keywords used were limited to English, because researchers wanted to get complete data about Islamic boarding school (Pesantren) education in Indonesia. The research findings are that the Islamic boarding school (Pesantren) model that is widely developed in Indonesia consists of three models, namely Salaf/traditional, modern, and integrated. First, the characteristics of Salaf (traditional) Islamic boarding schools, Islamic boarding schools only have non-formal education and are very identical to learning sourced from books. yellow. secondly, the characteristics of a modern Islamic boarding school (Pesantren)are Islamic boarding schools that use a modern approach, such as the curriculum and learning process. modern Islamic boarding school (Pesantren) education implements formal education (schools according to government regulations) and non-formal education (Islamic boarding schools). third, integrated Islamic boarding school, an Islamic boarding school (Pesantren)that combines Salaf and modern Islamic boarding school (Pesantren) education, so that the elements contained therein run collaboratively, such as a curriculum that combines the national curriculum and Islamic boarding school (Pesantren) curriculum, so that the Yellow Book becomes the main requirement for learning.

Abstract

Before Hasbi ash-Shiddieqy, Indonesian fiqh was predominantly characterized by a rigid and blind imitation (taqlid) rigidly adopting interpretations from Islamic schools in regions such as the Hijaz, Egypt, and India. These foreign teachings often lacked relevance to Indonesia's cultural context, causing friction between Islamic jurisprudence and local customary law (hukum adat). In response, Hasbi developed an Indonesian fiqh that integrated local traditions, aligning with the national motto Bhineka Tunggal Ika, which UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres praised as crucial for a harmonious future in Southeast Asia. This approach fosters unity through the respectful recognition of cultural diversity. This study explores how sustaining Bhineka Tunggal Ika can be achieved through religious moderation based on Indonesian fiqh, particularly focusing on Hasbi ash-Shiddieqy. Employing qualitative research, the study utilized a literature review and thematic content analysis through four steps: data collection (gathering relevant information), data reduction (filtering out irrelevant data), data display (visually organizing key themes), and inference (synthesising findings to address research questions). This study reveal that Hasbi ash-Shiddieqy's Indonesian fiqh approach strengthens religious moderation by integrating universal Islamic principles with local traditions and promoting peaceful conflict resolution, while being consistent with national regulations-Presidential Regulation 58/2023 and Minister of Religion Regulation 3/2024-that promote unity in diversity and foster social cohesion in Indonesia. Therefore, Hasbi ash-Shiddieqy's Indonesian fiqh modernizes Islamic law by integrating maslahah (public welfare) and urf (cultural practices), moving beyond rigid taqlid, and deserves recognition as a vital source for strengthening religious moderation and sustaining Bhineka Tunggal Ika in Indonesia.
