Abstract

In History writing and teaching, objectivity can not always be realized considering the character of knowledge that created by man who always can not shy away from the “subjectivity” of a human being. Especially in the teaching of history in which every teaching must necessarily refer to the normative goals that have been set, either by the state, schools, or teachers themselves. This suggests that the normativity be the main reference in the teaching of history. Both the curriculum and the standards applied in each lesson course based on a value system that is believed by its formers respectively. The value system is what will form the miscellaneous curriculum or standards and distinguish between one to another. This study tried to view and evaluate whether the values of Islam as a religion has the largest adopted is represented well in teaching, especially in the teaching of history. Conclusions from this research that, viewed in general, the tradition of the teaching of history in Indonesia, especially in the teaching of general history, is not from Islamic traditions. Even if there are some content that do not conflict with the islamic values, its only a coincident. Especially when considering the tradition of historical writing in Indonesia intensively started from the colonial-orientalist tradition that put Islam and Muslims as their main enemy. In many cases, it is found effort to omit the role of Islam and muslim in Indonesian history, and also the historical facts about the role of Muslims that is still not seated proportionally.

Abstract

Abstract

This research analyzes the intellectual debate between INSISTS and Liberal Islam in Indonesia during 2003–2012 from the perspective of Islamic civilizational studies. Using a historical method—heuristic, critical, interpretative, and historiographical—combined with a narrative approach, the study situates INSISTS within a broader civilizational discourse on knowledge, authority, and modernity. The findings indicate that INSISTS adopts an academically grounded strategy in engaging Liberal Islamic arguments, differentiating itself from earlier movements that relied more on social or political mobilization. The wide influence of INSISTS arises from the scholarly prestige of its members and its ability to connect with long-established Islamic institutions such as Gontor, MUI, NU, Muhammadiyah, Persis, and DDII. This article argues that the INSISTS–Liberal Islam debate reflects deeper civilizational tensions within Indonesia’s Islamic thought regarding epistemology, modernization, and the negotiation of global ideas.

Abstract

As Islam spread to various regions, especially to Europe, the Islamic cosmological worldview—whose foundation is the revelation of Allah (Swt.)—had to encounter already established cosmological ideas. In Medieval Europe, the dominant Christian cosmological view was in fact heavily influenced by Greek philosophy, particularly the ideas of Plato and Aristotle. Later, in the modern period in Europe, the dominance of philosophy was gradually replaced by secular science, which tended toward ateistic perspectives. How, then, did Islam respond to these intellectual currents, both the constructions of Greek philosophy and secular science? Was Islam influenced by philosophy and science in such a way that it altered its cosmological worldview, or did it instead utilize them to reaffirm Islamic cosmology? This paper, which analyzes relevant texts using the approach of intellectual history, finds that Islamic cosmology—grounded in the revelation of Allah (Swt.)—has been successfully engaged in dialogue by Muslim thinkers to face the challenges posed by both traditions. They employed the same instruments of argumentation, namely philosophy and science, harmonizing them with divine revelation so that the dialogue remained balanced. This is demonstrated in the works of Muslim thinkers such as Ibn Sina, Al-Ghazali, Hossein Nasr, Naquib Al-Attas, and others. They successfully used philosophy and science to defend an Islamic cosmology based on the revelation of Allah (Swt.). The principles of Islamic cosmology have never changed, even when encountering philosophy and science.
