Abstract

Economic development is often misinterpreted as merely financial growth and infrastructure expansion. However, the real essence of development lies in a multidimensional approach that incorporates social, cultural, and spiritual aspects, particularly within an Islamic context. This study explores the acculturation of Mataraman cultural traditions with Islamic values, focusing on Bersih Desa and Nyadran practices in Mataraman, Indonesia. Employing an ethnographic approach, data were gathered through observations and interviews with local stakeholders. The study examines how these traditions, initially influenced by Hinduism, have evolved to integrate Islamic teachings, thereby fostering community welfare, environmental stewardship, and social harmony. Results reveal that these practices align with Islamic principles of self-development, collective human prosperity, and the earth's stewardship. They demonstrate that local wisdom, when harmonized with religious values, contributes significantly to economic growth, social cohesion, and sustainable development. The findings underscore the importance of cultural preservation and propose that these traditions be promoted as cultural tourism assets, which could further enhance local economies. Future research is recommended to analyze the broader implications of Mataraman wisdom within the maqashid al-shariah framework.

Abstract

Micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) are critical to Indonesia's economic growth; however, they continue to face significant challenges, particularly limited access to broader markets. The integration of digital technology, especially e-commerce, presents a strategic opportunity to overcome these constraints. This community engagement initiative, in collaboration with Bank Jatim Pasar Besar Madiun and participants of the Certified Independent Study Internship Program (MSIB), aimed to enhance the digital capabilities of MSMEs through a structured mentorship program known as Friends of Power. This program provided tailored assistance in adopting digital marketing strategies and accessing online sales platforms. The intervention employed the Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD) approach, emphasizing the utilization of local assets, and data were collected through systematic observation and documentation. Findings indicate that the application of digital tools and e-commerce strategies significantly contributed to increased visibility, business expansion, and income growth among participating MSMEs. This study demonstrates the potential of digitally-driven empowerment models to support MSME resilience and scalability, offering valuable insights for policymakers and development practitioners.

Abstract

Grammar mastery is crucial for effective language acquisition and communication, especially in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) context. Recent studies show notable disparities in grammar achievement between male and female learners, but there is limited research focusing specifically on these differences within structured educational settings. This study aims to explore the comparative grammar achievement of male and female junior high school students in East Java, Indonesia, addressing the gap in understanding gender-specific learning outcomes. A comparative research design was employed, involving 60 ninth-grade students from a single public school, evenly divided by gender. Data collection involved administering a validated multiple-choice grammar test, assessing key grammatical concepts aligned with the national curriculum. The test's reliability was confirmed through a pilot study, and results were analyzed using SPSS, employing independent samples t-tests to determine the significance of gender differences in performance. Findings indicate that female students significantly outperformed their male counterparts in grammar achievement, with a higher average score and greater consistency. This disparity suggests the potential influence of gender-related factors in learning strategies and outcomes. The study underscores the necessity for educators to adapt instructional methods to accommodate diverse learner profiles, thereby promoting equitable educational experiences. Furthermore, it highlights the importance of addressing gender dynamics in grammar instruction, encouraging future research on tailored teaching practices that enhance learning outcomes for all students. Overall, this study contributes to the understanding of gender differences in EFL grammar achievement and calls for reconsideration of teaching methodologies to foster a more inclusive learning environment.

Abstract

Soft skills such as communication, leadership, teamwork, problem solving and entrepreneurship are increasingly recognised as essential for preparing graduates to thrive in today’s complex and competitive global workforce. This study investigates the integration of these 21st-century soft skills within Malaysian higher education, with a specific focus on the Special Arabic Language Program (SALP) at a public institution. Using a qualitative case study design, data were collected through semi-structured interviews with SALP alumni and supported by document analysis related to the programme. The findings reveal that both academic and co-curricular components of the SALP have played a significant role in developing students’ soft skills. These experiences have fostered competencies in communication, leadership, social engagement and entrepreneurship, all nurtured within a framework grounded in Islamic values.

Abstract

This program responds to the issue of stunting in Jombang Regency, namely the condition of growth failure in children due to malnutrition in the first 1,000 days of life, which threatens the quality of the generation facing 2045. Although the prevalence of stunting in Jombang (5.85% in early 2024) was below the national target (<14%), efforts to accelerate reduction are still needed in accordance with Regent Regulation No. 4 of 2022. This qualitative research aims to identify and analyze the implementation of integrated stunting reduction policies and their inhibiting factors. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and document studies, then analyzed using Soren C. Winter's policy implementation theory which emphasizes three behavioral aspects: inter-organizational relationships, lower-level bureaucrats, and target groups. The results show that implementation is running quite well, as evidenced by the decrease in cases from 5,509 (2022) to 3,428 (September 2024). However, several indicators have not reached the target, especially related to the suboptimal behavior of lower-level bureaucrats. The identified obstacles serve as learning materials for improvement. Therefore, it is recommended that the performance of policy makers be optimized and the human resource capacity of lower-level implementers be enhanced. Collaboration with the public and private sectors also needs to be strengthened to optimize comprehensive preventive measures for stunting.
