Abstract

Within this particular study, the designations of "Tourist" and "Explorer" are employed to denote students who approach their classroom learning experiences with either a desire for leisurely exploration (akin to that of a tourist) or a desire to delve deeper into the subject matter (more akin to that of an explorer). The semantics course delves deeply into the theory of meaning, fields of meaning, and sense, and specific topics within the course material may cause some anxiety for students. The objective of this research is to explore how anxiety affects the acquisition of knowledge in semantics courses, given that anxiety can have an adverse impact on mental well-being. This research uses a survey design, adopting Spielberger's State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) as the instrument. Forty-six individuals voluntarily completed a questionnaire regarding their learning experience. The respondents aged between 20 and 24 years old. There were 15 male individuals in the group, representing 32% of the total, while 31 female individuals comprised 67% of the group. In order to enhance the overall effectiveness of educational achievements, forthcoming studies will be taking into account supplementary factors. Through the lens of "Tourist or Explorer? Delving Students' Predilection and Anxiety in Semantics Course," this study advances our comprehension of the multifaceted nature of semantics education, inviting a more empathetic and comprehensive approach to pedagogy.

Abstract

In semantic relations, hyponymy is a relationship where a more specialized word (the hyponym) can be categorized under a more general or generic term (the hypernym). Understanding hyponymy helps elucidate how words and phrases relate to each other in terms of meaning, allowing for the classification of concepts and objects based on their specificity or generality. This research aimed to describe the hyponymic meaning relations found in Batak Toba songs and to explain the types of hyponyms used, particularly in these songs. The study employed a descriptive qualitative research method. The data comprised Batak Toba song lyrics sourced from a YouTube video uploaded on April 23, 2021 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dtSRkD9WyPU), containing fourteen songs that featured hyponymic relations. Data collection involved listening and note-taking techniques, while data analysis was guided by the theory of hyponymy proposed by Croft and Cruse. The analysis identified ten hyponymic words within the song lyrics. The study concluded that Batak Toba songs utilize hyponymic meaning relations, demonstrating how specific terms are subsumed under more general categories.

Abstract

This research explores the existence of ergative language features in the Sibolga Coastal dialect. Qualitative descriptive methods were used to analyze data obtained from nine folktale titles in Bunga Rampai Rakyat Tapanuli Tengah (The anthology of central Tapanuli folktales). Of the nine stories, ten clauses were found to show an ergative pattern, where the subject in the first clause acts as the object in the second clause. The findings show that the Sibolga Coastal dialect language has the characteristics of an ergative language in its structure, with a pattern where the subject of the first clause becomes the object of the following clause. These findings indicate a tendency to use ergative language features in the Sibolga Coastal dialect. This research concludes that the Sibolga Coastal dialect uses ergative language features, although in limited quantities. These findings contribute to understanding the syntactic structure of the Sibolga Coastal language and provide new insights into the phenomenon of ergative language in the local context. The implications of this research include supporting the development of linguistic studies and regional language studies and contributing to language teaching and translation in the region. Future research can be expanded to further investigate the features of ergative language in the Sibolga Coastal dialect and the context of its use in daily interactions.

Abstract

In the quickly changing context of the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) revolution, it is essential to comprehend how Generation Z (Gen Z) modifies their language usage. As digital natives who have grown up with technology, Gen Z is at the forefront of shaping and transforming language in the digital age. This study investigates the notable changes in Gen Z's language use in digital discourse, emphasizing Instagram. The goal is to recognize how the linguistic shifts of Gen Z are changing how people communicate in digital environments. This study used a qualitative content analysis method to analyze the data from Instagram comments and posts, highlighting essential features such mixing language, new slang and expression, use of non-standard spelling, emoji language and use of symbols, and contextualization in pop culture and social media trends. The results show that Gen Z used the linguistic shift in their communication in digital discourse such as communication in Instragram. These linguistic patterns show how Gen Z navigates and shapes their digital identities through language and how engaged they are with pop culture and social media trends. This study adds to our understanding of how digital platforms shape language use and social interaction in the modern period. It emphasizes the necessity of more investigation into how these changes may affect sociolinguistic theory, pedagogy, and communication techniques.

Abstract

Abstract

This research aims to delineate the grammatical relations within the Toba Batak language, explicitly focusing on characterizing the behavioral properties of subject construction. Employing a descriptive qualitative research approach, this study drew its data from 14 songs in the Toba Batak language retrieved from the social media platform YouTube, containing instances of grammatical relations, particularly those undergoing subject construction examination. The data collection process involved listening to and recording song lyrics in the Toba Batak language. Within these songs, the identified subject constructions undergoing testing include the Subject of quantifier float ("all") and relativization ("which"). Subject constructions such as non-obvious pronominal (PRO) and raising were also observed. Consequently, it is inferred that subject construction can be examined and scrutinized within the context of Toba Batak language songs.
