Abstract

This study uses stochastic frontier analysis (SFA) to evaluate the efficacy of Cavendish banana cultivation technology in Bojonegoro Regency. An opinion survey of 16 Cavendish banana farmers spread across seven sub-districts in Bojonegoro Regency provides primary data. Farmers' technical productivity and the variables that affect it are assessed using SFA analysis. Based on the findings, Cavendish banana producers in Bojonegoro Regency have an average technical productivity of 80.8%. The stochastic frontier production function model includes the seven variables shown in table 1 and hypothesized to have an impact on output levels: land area, seeds, chemical fertilizers, organic fertilizers, labor, and capital. Large areas of land, organic fertilizers and pesticides are all elements that have a significant impact on the effectiveness of farmer technology. While age, education level, and number of family members are variables that affect inefficiency. The variable level of education is an element that has quite a large influence on technological inefficiency. The findings of this study are expected to educate relevant stakeholders and increase the effectiveness of the technology for the Cavendish banana industry in Bojonegoro Regency.

Abstract

This study aims to assess the readiness for the implementation of Total Quality Management (TQM) and explore its relationship with product quality and production efficiency in a micro, small and medium enterprise (MSME) producing snacks through a single case study approach, which has limitations in terms of generalization. The respondents involved were owners and employees (n = 4) who were selected purposively. TQM readiness was measured using an instrument based on five dimensions, namely customer focus, continuous improvement, employee involvement, leadership, and process management, which were adapted from the TQM conceptual framework and measured using a 1–5 Likert scale. The readiness index was calculated using a simple unweighted average, with the following categories: 1.0–2.0 (not ready), 2.1–3.0 (not very ready), 3.1–4.0 (quite ready), and 4.1–5.0 (ready). Product quality and production efficiency were evaluated based on respondents' views, supported by direct observation of the production process to reduce bias in internal reports. This analysis was performed using descriptive and Spearman's rank correlation statistics. The findings of this study show that the readiness index is 4.00, product quality is 3.66, and production efficiency is 3.16. The identified relationship shows a positive connection between TQM readiness and product quality (ρ = 0.632) and production efficiency (ρ = 0.775). Pareto analysis found three main factors causing production problems—raw material instability (30%), lack of Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) (16.67%), and defective products (13.33%)—which contributed to 60% of total incidents. The results of this study provide a readiness profile and identify priority gaps in process management, emphasizing the importance of implementing operational standards to improve production efficiency.

Abstract

The plantation sector plays a strategic role in the national economy. Tobacco is one of the leading commodities that contributes to national economic development. This is evidenced by the tobacco industry, which employs an average of 47,840 people. Bojonegoro Regency is one of the largest tobacco producers in East Java Province, but crop productivity tends to fluctuate. This is due to the diversity of production inputs used by farmers. This study aims to group tobacco farmers based on their patterns of production input use. The approach used in this study is multivariate cluster analysis with the K-means algorithm. The method used in this study is descriptive quantitative with primary data collection through questionnaires to 100 tobacco farmer respondents from six sub-districts using the Simple Random Sampling technique. The sub-districts were selected based on the largest tobacco production in descending order, starting from Kepohbaru, Kedungadem, Baureno, Sugihwaras, Sukosewu, and Temayang. The variables analyzed included land area, number of seedlings, amount of fertilizer, labor, pesticides, and capital. The data were processed through Z-score standardization and analyzed using the K-Means Clustering algorithm with the help of SPSS software. The determination of the optimal number of clusters was validated using the Elbow and Silhouette Coefficient methods. The characteristics of the farmers revealed that the majority of tobacco farmers in Bojonegoro were of productive age (51-60 years) with considerable farming experience (16-25 years), but in terms of education, they were predominantly elementary school graduates with relatively small land holdings (≤0.5 Ha). The grouping of tobacco farmers using K-means clustering is expected to form groups of farmers based on patterns of production input use so that the results of this study can be used as a reference in the formulation of agricultural policies.

Abstract

Demand for banana commodities in Indonesia is relatively high, especially as an ingredient for food diversification. Judging from per capita consumption, bananas are consumed the most, with an average consumption of 24.71 grams/capita/day. Besides high domestic demand, bananas have high potential and competitiveness in the international market. The value of banana exports in Indonesia has increased by 42.81% from 2021. Throughout 2022, Indonesia has exported 22,112.98 tonnes of bananas to several countries, such as Malaysia, Singapore, and China. However, requests from these countries have not been met by Indonesia (Coordinating Ministry for the Economy of the Republic of Indonesia, 2020). Demand for exports of horticultural commodities, especially bananas, is relatively high but cannot yet be met. This means that the amount of banana production available is still insufficient to meet the community's needs and export of banana commodities. This research aims to determine internal and external factors, appropriate business development strategies, and priority strategies to be implemented at UD Istana Banana. The study was conducted at UD Istana Banana in Bojonegoro Regency in December 2023. Based on the results of the data analysis, the IFE Matrix (Internal Factor Evaluation) got a total score of 3.25, and the EFE Matrix (External Factor Evaluation) got a total score of 2.85. So, in the Internal External (IE) matrix, the company's position is in quadrant IV, which means the company's position is in growth and development. Furthermore, in the SWOT analysis, ten alternative strategies were obtained, and based on the QSPM analysis, it showed that the alternative strategy to develop the business by expanding partnerships and establishing good relationships with work partners and consumers received the highest score with a value of 5.89 which was the priority strategy at UD Istana Banana.
