Abstract

Menopause is the permanent cessation of menstruation due to loss of ovarian follicular activity. Assessment of the age of menopause is particularly important because previous studies have shown a high risk of osteoporosis, hypertension, stroke, and coronary heart disease. This study aims to determine the risk factors for early menopause in Javanese women in Oransbari District, West Papua Province. The cross-sectional sampling method was carried out on women aged 51.73 years with an interval of 40.07-78.58 years. Age at menopause was calculated using the Probit Generalized Linear Model (GLM) analysis. We used a binary logit regression (BLR) model to estimate risk factors for early menopause. BLR analysis was fitted to estimate the odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI). Age at menopause is divided into two categories, normal (≥45 years) and early (<45 years). Our results show that the average age of menopause is 43.1 years, or the early menopause category, with an age range of 39.61 to 55.28 years. The results of the partial parameter significance test at the 10% significance level showed that no formal education (OR: 2.348; CI 1.4213.917) had the most significant risk factor for experiencing early menopause, followed by parity (OR: 0.623; CI: 0.377-1.023), contraception (OR: 0.118; CI: 0.038-0.296), and the lowest risk was the age at first delivery (OR: 0.389; CI: 0.207-0.716). The biocultural conditions experienced early in life in Oransbari shape the character of a younger reproductive age as an adaptive response to maximize fitness.

Abstract

The first time sperm production experienced by a man as an early sign of gonadal maturity (spermarche) is still considered taboo and violates ethics to be discussed in public. As a sign of sexual maturity, the age at spermarche varies among individu and population. This study aims to determine the age at spermarche of boys in urban area of Manokwari West Papua Province. The method used in this research is cross sectional with interview technique. Data collection of age at spermarche is done using status quo method. The mean age at spermarche was analyzed using a generalized linear model (GLM) probit analysis. The average age at spermarche of boys in urban area of Manokwari, West Papua Province was 12.83 years younger than the age at spermarche in rural areas of West Papua and western Indonesia. These characteristic reveals the response of plasticity in understanding the natural history of a population.

Abstract

A woman's reproductive life goes through several phases including menstruation, childbirth and menopause. The first menstrual event experienced by a woman is called menarche, while the end of the menstrual period is called menopause. The age intervals for menarche and menopause describe the reproductive period or fertile age for a woman to become pregnant and give birth. The postreproductive period characterized by menopause is related to a woman's life expectancy and is important for assessing the quality of life. This research aims to determine the reproductive period of Javanese women in Oransbari, South Manokwari Regency. Cross-sectional research was conducted on women with an average age of 51.73 years with an interval of 40.18-69.59 years. The inclusion criteria were women who had experienced menopause. The age of menarche and menopause were analyzed using the Generalized Linear Model (GLM) in the R program. We found that the age at menarche (12.3 years) and age at menopause (43.1 years) of Javanese women in Oransbari were relatively young. This condition results in a shorter reproductive period (30.8 years) compared to several populations in Indonesia such as Sunda, Baduy, Tengger, Lampung, and Semendo. The reproductive period, which tends to be short, might be an adaptive response to environmental challenges that were less favourable as a pioneer transmigration society, such as high physical activity and low socio-economic conditions. The biocultural conditions experienced in the early life of Oransbari form a reproductive period that starts and ends early as an adaptive response to maximize reproductive success. Thus, women's reproductive health especially communities in isolated and remote areas, needs to be studied and become one of the government's focuses in considering intervention policies related to the health and welfare of the elderly and demographics

Abstract

One of the phenotypic variations in humans to adapt to environmental conditions is physical growth. One of the impacts of environmental pressure on children's growth is malnutrition. This research aims to assess the association of nutritional status with cognitive abilities and motor skills in elementary school-age children in Oransbari, South Manokwari, West Papua. Cross-sectional design research was carried out on children aged 6–12 years from two primary schools in January- June 2023. Semistructured interviews guided by a questionnaire were carried out to collect data on cognitive and motoric abilities. Body height and body weight were measured to assess the nutritional status. Our research showed that nutritional status was mostly a normal category, while stunting, severe stunting, and thinness which refers to undernutrition were quite low. Undernutrition tendency in Papuan children was higher than in non-Papuan children, with the severely stunted 2.44%:0.83% between Papuan and non-Papuan and thinness at 7.32%:5.83%. Expectably stunted category non-Papuan showed quite high than Papuan (3.33%:2.44%). In contrast, the percentages of thinness and obesity which refer to overnutrition were quite high in non-Papuan with values of 14.0% and 16.6% respectively. The chi-square test showed that the malnutrition category was not related to cognitive and motor skills (P-value <0.05).

Abstract

The significant impact of stunting in early childhood affects both physical growth and cognitive development. The prevalence of stunting in Jungkat Village highlights the importance of monitoring growth and development during mid-childhood (ages 6-12), as it is a critical period for cognitive, social, and physical development. The study aims to provide insights into the effectiveness of interventions in addressing stunting by describing the body size and nutritional status of children aged 6-12 in Jungkat Village. A cross-sectional method was employed in four primary schools in Jongkat District. Anthropometric measurements of body height and body weight were used to calculate nutritional status indices, including the body height-to-age index and body mass index. In Jungkat Village, children aged 6-12 show varied growth patterns, including high rates of stunting and obesity, with some stunted children maintaining normal BMI for age, indicating complex interactions between nutrition and growth. In addition, there is no significant sexual dimorphism in growth patterns at this age, but differences in weight are evident, with boys generally heavier after age 7. Environmental, socioeconomic, and behavioral factors may significantly influence these patterns, underscoring the need for integrated health and nutrition interventions that target maternal and early childhood support.

Abstract

Papua has a high level of species diversity and endemism. This community service activity (PKM) is motivated by the decreasing of Papua's biodiversity due to anthropogenic activities and global warming, so it is necessary to make efforts to increase public awareness, especially among the children about the concept of protection, management, and use wisely and sustainably for Papua's diversity. Therefore, we carried out socialization about the Papuan animals and their conservation status to students at SMA Negeri 1 and SMA YPPK St. Arnoldus Jansen in Bintuni Bay District, West Papua Province on 10-11 December 2021. Socialization activities involve lectures, questions, and answers, filling out questionnaires, and giving rewards. The results showed that 61.54% of participants did not know the conservation status of animals in Papua based on Indonesian and international regulations. In addition, as many as 87.18% of participants stated that some animals in Papua were sold in the market and participants also consumed some of these animals. However, the participants' desire to protect Papua's animals is quite high (94.87%).

Abstract

Physical growth and sexual maturity are two important events in the childhood phase. Measurement and assessment of development of body size is the best ways to understand the adaptive respond when face enviromental challenges of the traditional population. Several populations show that girls and boys tend to show varying ages and rates of growth and sexual maturity. The aim of this study was to study the growth patterns of height, weight and age at menarche in children of the Biak tribe in the Padaido Islands Region, Biak Regency, Papua Province. Cross-sectional research was designed to the children consisting of 130 boys and 153 girls. In order to determine the age at menarche using the status quo method.  The growth curve was analyzed using the Generalized Linear Model for Location, Shape and Scale (GAMLSS) model and the age of menarche was analyzed using the Probit-GLM analysis. Although geographic condition of Padaido island was isolated, the infrastructure and sosioeconomic conditions were indequate, however the age at menarche of Padaido girls (13,2 years) was included in the same category as the age at menarche nationally. The physical growth curve (height and weight) for girls exceeds that of boys before and during menarche, then decreases after menarche. This pattern is in line with previous research that girls have a larger stature at puberty because they accumulate body fat in preparation for menarche and the development of secondary sex characteristics. The environmental challenges have implications for the limited availability of energy to regulate maximum skeletal growth achieved at a young age, while the development of fat mass is achieved more slowly after sexual maturity. This describes a shift that deviates from the normal growth and development of the body..
