Abstract

Kata Kunci: Uncaria gambir Roxb, Tikus Jantan, Afrodisiaka, Libidometer Bajakah kalalawit (BK) is empirically used as a traditional medicine to increase sexual endurance. This study aimed to analyze the effect of administration of BK stem extract on the sexual activity of white male rats (Rattus norvegicus) with the parameters of introduction, climbing, and coitus. The research design was a Completely Randomized Design with five treatments and three days of induction. BK stems were macerated with 96% ethanol. Negative control was induced with 0.5% CMC-Na and positive control was induced with sildenafil citrate at 10 mg/kg BW. P1, P2, and P3 were induced by BK stem extract at dose of 150 mg/kg BW/day, 200 mg/kg BW/day, and 250 mg/kg BW/day, respectively. Introduction, climbing and coitus activities in the induced test of male rats were observed using libidometer. The results showed that the induction of BK stem extract could increase the sexual activity of male rats at dose of 150 mg/kg BW/day compared to the control group and other treatment groups.

Abstract

The pandemic of COVID-19 has forced pharmacist assistance practitioners to strive to improve their qualifications and competencies, especially in molecular biology. The human resources competencies in this field are still lacking, resulting in some obstacles in the handling of COVID-19 encountering, thus hampering the acceleration of post-pandemic recovery. The Virus that can spread rapidly requires competent health workers to move as quickly as possible to overcome this pandemic condition. Ignorance of these critical technical matters often occurs so that it affects the identification results, which are expected to be more accurate, precise, and reliable. In a workforce to increase the competency capacity of pharmacist assistants in the biomolecular field, especially in the technical competence of genetic material isolation and PCR methods, the Pharmacy Study Program of Ma Chung University held Webinars and Workshops related to DNA isolation and quality testing. The webinar and workshop on the isolation of genetic material were carried out to implement one of the research topics in the Pharmacy Study Program, especially in the field of development of molecular biology. The essential thing in this webinar and workshop is discussing some critical criteria before the actual virus identification. This program collaborates with PAFI (Indonesian Pharmacy Experts Association) of Batu City as a partner. People who took part in this event consisted of 63 persons from the Batu City and Malang City areas. Most of the participants work in health facilities, with 50% of the participants having isolated genetic material and PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction). Spreading the pre and post-test with the same questions increased the average acknowledgment score from 42.9 to 61.1. This indicates that continuous training in this field needs to be held on an ongoing program so that the competence of pharmacists in the field of molecular biology is getting better.

Abstract

Growing evidence suggests that biofilm formation in Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PA) results from quorum sensing, reducing bacterial sensitivity to antibiotics and fostering the development of antibiotic-resistant strains. Addressing the need for a compound that can inhibit quorum sensing signals to mitigate biofilm formation in PA, this study screened 40 essential oils for their potential as quorum sensing inhibitors against PA ATCC9027. Utilizing the agar well diffusion assay, the antibacterial activity of these essential oils was compared with levofloxacin, revealing that 25 out of 40 essential oils exhibited antibacterial activity against PA ATCC9027. The highest antibacterial activity was exhibited by essential oils from Cinnamomum burmannii (Cinnamon Bark Oil), Cananga odorata (Ylang-ylang Oil), and Eucalyptus globulus (Eucalyptus Oil), confirmed by respective MIC values of 0.09765% (v/v), 0.390625% (v/v), and 1.5625% (v/v), and MBC values of 0.09765% (v/v), > 1.5625% (v/v), and > 1.5625% (v/v). Growth curve inhibition assay followed by crystal violet biofilm formation assay revealed that only Ylang-ylang Oil exhibited biofilm formation inhibition at 1/4 MIC concentration. Docking analysis of compounds from these essential oils against quorum sensing enzymes (LasR, PqsR, and QscR) revealed that Ylang-ylang Oil compounds exhibited the highest binding affinity. In conclusion, among the 40 essential oils tested, 25 show potential as antibacterials against PA ATCC9027, with Ylang-ylang Oil standing out as a promising candidate for quorum sensing inhibitor development. The use and development of quorum sensing inhibitors from Ylang-ylang Oil compounds are expected to reduce the burden of antibiotic resistance, especially in Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

Abstract

Kucur Village is a tangerine producer in Malang Regency. However, people still sell it in fresh fruit form; besides that, the pest of fruit flies is also a scourge for farmers, and the absorption capacity in the market for fresh fruit is still relatively lower than the products produced. Processing oranges into secondary products can be a solution for farmers by processing tangerines. Ma Chung University's service aims to develop recipes for making instant powder drinks from tangerines to increase the tangerines' economic value. The method used is recipe development in the laboratory, which is practised in Kucur Village to find which recipe is most suitable and produce products for sale. The results of this service and the Kucur village community produced a recipe suitable for sale as an instant powder drink. The recipe for this instant powder drink contains an infusion of lemongrass stems, ginger, bay leaves, and lime.
