Abstract

Abstract

Statistical literacy is an essential competency in today’s data-driven society. However, research in this field often overlooks primary-level students, focusing predominantly on those in higher education. To address this gap, the present study evaluated the statistical literacy of 50 fifth-grade students in Indonesia, with a focus on their abilities in data analysis and interpretation. Utilizing a descriptive cross-sectional design, the study employed a written test grounded in real-world data scenarios, adapted from established theoretical frameworks. The assessment included various data representations—pictograms, bar charts, tables, and line charts—designed to evaluate students’ skills in comprehension, comparison, and interpretation. The results indicate that the majority of students operated at an Idiosyncratic level, demonstrating limited capacity for data interpretation, while a smaller proportion reached the Transitional level; notably, no students attained Quantitative or Analytical proficiency. These findings underscore the urgent need for curriculum reforms to enhance both computational and analytical skills at an early stage, thereby equipping students with the foundational competencies required for advanced data reasoning. Future research should investigate pedagogical strategies that can bridge early-stage statistical literacy with the demands of higher-level statistical reasoning, ensuring students are better prepared for a data-intensive world.

Abstract

Spatial reasoning is essential for success in mathematics and STEM fields, yet it is often overlooked in primary school curricula. This study investigates the levels and progression of spatial reasoning abilities among primary school students in Indonesia, focusing on mental rotation, spatial orientation, and spatial visualization. A cross-sectional study involving 135 students from Year 2, Year 4, and Year 6 used an adapted Spatial Reasoning Instrument. Results showed below-average spatial reasoning abilities overall, with notable improvement with age: Year 2 students averaged a Spatial Reasoning Test Score (SRTS) of 1.66, Year 4 students 2.02, and Year 6 students 2.68. Challenges were identified in tasks requiring multi-step spatial reasoning, spatial language comprehension, and 2D-3D transformations, particularly among younger students. These findings highlight the need for curriculum enhancements and targeted interventions to develop spatial reasoning skills from an early age, improving academic performance in STEM subjects.

Abstract

The current research intends to both identify students’ strategies and clarify the level of students’ number sense expression of primary students in solving problems relating to addition, subtraction, and multiplication of integers. This is a qualitative research. Five respondents are involved which are randomly taken from a primary school in Lombok Island. The data are collected through test. Meanwhile, data analysis utilize three indicators of number senses in order to answer two main research questions. The findings indicate that, firstly, the strategies used by the students to solve problems relating to addition, subtraction, and multiplication are homogenous, routine and standardized which are algorithm or procedure oriented, such as column addition, column subtraction, and column multiplication, respectively. Secondly, according to the four level of number sense expressions ─such as ‘not yet evident’, emerging, expressing, and excelling─, the findings indicate that the students’ level of number sense expression is categorized as ‘not yet evident’, which is the lowest level of the four level.

Abstract

The integration of culturally embedded knowledge systems into mathematics education has gained scholarly interest in recent years; however, empirical research remains limited, particularly in the context of Indonesian coastal communities where traditional ecological knowledge is closely tied to astronomical and environmental cycles. Despite the growing prominence of ethnomathematics, there is a noticeable paucity of studies that systematically investigate the mathematical reasoning inherent in indigenous calendrical systems used for livelihood practices. Addressing this gap, the present study explores the ethnomathematical knowledge embedded in the calendrical practices of the Lungkak community in East Lombok, Indonesia. This system uniquely integrates local interpretations of the Pupuru (the Pleiades star cluster), lunar phases, the Hijri calendar, and the Gregorian calendar to predict seasonal transitions and tidal patterns crucial to artisanal fishing. Employing an ethnographic research design, data were gathered through purposive sampling, in-depth interviews, participant observation, and document analysis, and analyzed using interactive ethnographic techniques. The findings uncover sophisticated mathematical reasoning within the community’s calendrical system, including trigonometric concepts (angular relationships among celestial bodies), arithmetic and numerical sequences (predictive visibility patterns), modular arithmetic (cyclical astronomical forecasting), and set theory (classification of tidal phenomena). These insights reveal how formal mathematical concepts are embedded within cultural practices, demonstrating the community’s implicit engagement with abstract reasoning. This study contributes to the development of culturally responsive mathematics education by emphasizing the pedagogical value of integrating ethnomathematical content into classroom instruction. Such integration holds potential to enrich students’ mathematical literacy, foster contextual understanding, and support meaningful engagement with mathematical concepts through culturally relevant learning experiences.
