Abstract

There is limited literature reporting on the use of the Rasch model in analyzing the conceptual understanding of student temperature in Indonesia. This study aims to analyze students’ conceptual understanding using a two-level diagnostic instrument. Students’ conceptual understanding was administered through a survey method using a two-level misconception diagnostic instrument. The survey was conducted on 26 students (31% boys and 69% girls) at a public high school in the Tidore Islands, Indonesia. Students’ conceptual understanding of the temperature material was administered using six diagnostic items and analyzed using the Wright map. The analysis results showed a shift in the level of conceptual understanding of 50% of students. So, the Wright map provides a visualization of shifts in the level of students’ conceptual understanding of the topic of temperature.

Abstract

This study aimed to determine the motivation level of high school students during online learning using Google Incorporated. This research is included in the type of survey research. The survey was conducted in one high school in the city of Yogyakarta. Respondents consisted of 32 people (L = 46% and P = 54%) students of class X. Student motivation was evaluated using a motivational instrument consisting of 14 items and spread over three aspects: motivation, self-efficacy, and responsibility. The instrument uses a 5-point Likert scale, from Strongly Disagree (1) to Strongly Agree (5). The level of student motivation was analyzed using the Rasch model with the Logit Value of Person (LVP) technique combined with the Wright map and Differential Item Functioning (DIF). The analysis results show that 41% of students have a moderate level of motivation, 25% at a high level, 19% at a very high level, and 16% at a low level. The results of the DIF analysis show that one of the items (Re4) in the Responsibility aspect tends to benefit female students. This has implications for the emergence of student interest in studying physics.

Abstract

Misconceiving fundamental physics concepts is a persistent challenge in education, hindering students' ability to grasp more advanced topics. This study aims to compare students' conceptual understanding and confidence levels using a 4-tier diagnostic instrument. Conducted as a survey involving 56 high school students in Yogyakarta, the research utilized a 4-tier diagnostic test covering topics of temperature and heat. Data were collected through Google Forms and analyzed using Excel and Winsteps 4.6.1 based on the Rasch Model. Data analysis involved coding, preparing raw data, and utilizing Wright maps combined with Logit Value of Person (LVP) for assessing students' conceptual understanding and confidence levels. Results indicated a significant inconsistency between students' conceptual understanding and their confidence, with many students displaying high confidence despite low understanding, and vice versa. This mismatch highlights the necessity for educational strategies that not only clarify concepts but also align students' confidence with their actual understanding. The study's implications suggest the need for more comprehensive diagnostic tools and targeted pedagogical interventions to enhance learning outcomes in physics education.

Abstract

The transition to online learning during the pandemic has significantly impacted Indonesian students’ physics learning motivation. Recognizing the need for culturally relevant tools to assess this motivation, this study aims to adapt the physics motivation questionnaire (PMQ) to the Indonesian context. This research, which was conducted on 107 secondary and vocational school students, had a balanced gender distribution and used survey methodology. The PMQ, which was adapted from the biology motivation questionnaire (BMQ) through a rigorous forward-backward translation process, was analyzed for its psychometric properties using the Rasch model. This analysis focuses on the content aspects of construct validity, assessing content relevance, representativeness, and technical quality. The results show that the PMQ, using a 4-point Likert scale, effectively addresses these elements, thus confirming its reliability and applicability in the Indonesian educational environment. This study concludes that the culturally adapted PMQ is a valuable instrument for evaluating Indonesian students’ motivation to study physics, especially in the context of ongoing changes in the educational landscape.

Abstract

There are limited studies on the diagnosis of heat and temperature misconceptions using a four-tier instrument diagnostic test. Therefore, this study aims to identify misconceptions in heat and temperature material. The survey research was conducted on 164 students at SMAN 2 Bantul. Students were selected using a convenience sampling technique. Identification of student misconceptions using the Four Tier Heat and Temperature Diagnostic Test (4T-HTDT). Students' conceptual understanding is calculated using the percentage technique. The results of this study indicate that there are still many students who have misconceptions on the concept of "heat-temperature as an extensive quantity" and "heat-temperature depends on material objects". The findings are expected to be a strategic step for designing appropriate remedial teaching.

Abstract

Economic disparities and variations in geographical conditions in Indonesia exacerbate access to physics laboratories. Therefore, innovative solutions such as remote physics laboratories are needed to bridge this gap and provide more equitable access to students across the region, regardless of economic or geographical conditions. To overcome this, this research aims to develop a remote physics laboratory for equitable access to quality physics experiments. This research includes 4D model development research. The research subjects involved five students for the functionality test, 84 people for the user test, and ten media experts to assess the feasibility of the product. The instruments used include functionality test instruments, media expert assessments, and usefulness, satisfaction, and ease of use (USE) questionnaires. Tool functionality data and media expert validation were analyzed using the Aiken V technique. At the same time, the level of user acceptance was examined through a combination of Wright maps and logit item values. This development resulted in a remote physics experiment architecture and device with a good functionality assessment index. The assessment by media experts showed high validity. The level of user acceptance is classified in the medium to high category. Thus, the developed R-PhyLab has the potential to be an effective medium in equalizing access to quality physics laboratories in educational institutions that face economic limitations and unfavorable geographical conditions.
