Abstract

This article discusses on religious contestation on determination of Islamic Calendar in Urban Muslim society in Indonesia. An Indonesian Islamic calendar discourse is always dominated by Nahdatul Ulama and Muhammadiyah as two largest Islamic NGOs. The choice of individuals from this group to fill the office of Minister of Religious Affairs, the official authority, is a sign of the domination amongst these mass organizations. To analyze the contestation of religious authority, this paper recommends the application of an analytical framework of the Gramsci’s hegemony theory which illustrates the contestation between them. Data were gathered through in-depth interviews with the two organizations' experts in Islamic astronomy, which were then evaluated using a descriptive approach. The finding of this paper reveal that the contestation between Nahdatul Ulama and Muhammadiyah not only in relation to the power, but also strengthening the identity of each group to shows their power on Islamic Calendar discourse in Indonesia.

Abstract

This study examines the implementation of deep learning within a holistic education framework to strengthen Islamic character through a transformative spiritual model in elementary education. The research analyzes the integration of Intellectual Quotient (IQ) and Spiritual Quotient (SQ) grounded in mindful, meaningful, and joyful learning. Employing a qualitative, holistic single-case study at SD Muhammadiyah Bantul Kota, Yogyakarta, data were gathered through participatory observations, documentation analysis, and in-depth interviews with the principal, teachers, and sixth-grade students. Data were analyzed using an interactive model involving condensation, display, and source triangulation. The findings reveal that deep learning effectively integrates cognitive and spiritual dimensions; for instance, science lessons transcend conceptual understanding by incorporating spiritual reflections on divine greatness. The three foundations of deep learning foster intrinsic religiosity, transforming practices such as prayer and dhikr into internal spiritual needs rather than mere formal obligations. Furthermore, the study identifies the emergence of a transformative spiritual culture evidenced by spontaneous Islamic behaviors, including honesty, empathy, and the "7S" values (Senyum, Sapa, Salam, Sopan, Santun, Syukur, dan Sabar (Smile, Salutation, Socialize, Soft spokenness, Stability, Shukr 'Gratitude', and Steadfastness). These results indicate that synthesizing deep learning with holistic Islamic education promotes balanced cognitive, emotional, and spiritual development, ultimately enhancing students' moral resilience and character formation in contemporary elementary education

Abstract

Abstract Life in a pesantren can place substantial emotional demands on adolescents. This study examined how Muhammadiyah Boarding School (MBS) Pleret, Yogyakarta, applies the Rahmatan lil-’Alamin educational framework in relation to santri resilience. Using interpretive qualitative phenomenology, the study involved eleven purposively selected participants: four high school santri as primary informants and seven institutional leaders, teachers, and counselors as supporting informants. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, non-participant naturalistic observation, and institutional documents, then analyzed through data condensation involving selection, simplification, abstraction, and transformation. Three recurring patterns were identified: the integration of compassionate values into learning, the use of dhikr, muhasabah, and reflective journaling to manage emotional strain, and peer and mentor support in daily residential life. The findings indicate that daily religious and relational practices were experienced by participants as resources for coping and emotional balance. The study offers a context-sensitive account of faith-based student support without making clinical claims.
