Abstract

Background: Stunting is a public health problem that remains a serious challenge in Indonesia, including in North Aceh, with a prevalence of 30.2% in 2024, far above the WHO standard (<20%). One of the main causes is inappropriate complementary feeding practices, both in terms of quality and quantity, and low maternal nutritional knowledge. Purpose: To analyze the local complementary feeding strategy using metroxylon sp (sago) and moringa oleifera (moringa leaves) with maternal nutrition education for stunting management. Method: A quasi-experimental approach was used, with a sample size of 128 stunted toddlers and their mothers as participants. The intervention was carried out through nutritional counseling and the provision of locally sourced complementary foods for four weeks. Data were collected through child anthropometric measurements, a maternal knowledge questionnaire, and statistical analysis using the Wilcoxon Signed Ranks Test. Results: Fifty-five participants (43.0%) had good nutritional status at pretest, but after the intervention, this increased to 108 participants (84.4%), with a p-value of 0.000. This indicates a significant improvement in nutritional status after the intervention. Furthermore, 92 participants (71.9%) had poor maternal knowledge before the intervention, but this improved after the intervention, with the majority falling into the fair (39.8%) and good (35.2%) categories. The p-value of 0.000 indicates an effect of the intervention on improving maternal knowledge. Conclusion: The combination of nutrition education and the use of local foods such as sago and moringa leaves effectively improves children's nutritional status while empowering the community through a local wisdom approach. Suggestion: This study can expand and strengthen nutrition education programs that involve mothers on an ongoing basis using various methods, such as videos, modules, and direct counseling to increase knowledge about providing nutritious complementary foods.   Keywords: Nutrition Education; Mothers; Metroxylon Sp (Sago); Moringa Oleifera (Moringa Leaves); Local MP-ASI; Stunting.

Abstract

Malnutrition remains a global challenge with far-reaching health and developmental implications. Indonesia continues to experience a high prevalence of stunting, reaching 31.8%, which highlights the need for effective and sustainable interventions. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a locally based intervention utilizing Metroxylon sp. (aren sago) and Moringa oleifera (moringa leaves) as complementary food additives combined with maternal nutrition education in reducing stunting. A quasi-experimental study was conducted in North Aceh in July 2025, involving 128 mothers and their stunted children aged 6–24 months old. The intervention consisted of nutrition education on complementary foods made with sago and moringa leaves, delivered through modules and videos, along with a four-week provision of complementary foods. Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. The findings demonstrated a significant improvement in the nutritional status of children, with the proportion classified as having a good nutritional status increasing from 43.0% to 84.4%, and no cases of severe malnutrition were identified (p < 0.05). Maternal nutrition knowledge also improved, with 35.2% achieving a “good” score (p < 0.05). In conclusion, locally sourced food-based interventions combined with nutrition education effectively improve children’s nutritional status and strengthen maternal knowledge. This approach is recommended as a contextual and sustainable strategy for stunting prevention

Abstract

Background of study: Stunting is a condition where toddlers don't grow properly because they don't get enough nutrition over a long time, get sick often, and don't get enough mental stimulation. One way to prevent stunting is by using Moringa leaves. However, many parents don't know much about the benefits of Moringa leaves, so it's important to educate them so they understand better. Aims and scope of paper: This study aimed to find out how giving Moringa leaf powder to mothers affects their knowledge about preventing stunting in Drean Rampak Village. Method: This research used a quantitative design with a quasi-experimental approach, specifically a one-group pretest-posttest design. The study took one month, from August 1 to September 1, 2024, and included 49 participants. It used the Wilcoxon test for analysis of the data. Results: The study found that giving Moringa leaf powder had a big effect on mothers' knowledge about preventing stunting, with a p-value of 0.000, which is less than the significance level of 0.05, and a z-value of -6.285b. Conclusion: The results show that giving Moringa leaf powder helps improve mothers' knowledge about preventing stunting in Drean Rampak Village, West Aceh. More promotion and education about stunting and the benefits of Moringa leaves are needed to help reduce the number of children who are stunted.
