Abstract

Traditional teacher-centered approaches are being replaced by collaborative learning methods like cooperative learning. This research explores the benefits of cooperative learning for both introverted and extroverted students. A pre-experimental, one-group pretest-posttest design was employed. The participants were first-semester students at a health science institute (n=18). Purposive sampling was used to select a group of students. The researcher administered a personality assessment to classify students as introverts or extroverts. The findings showed that cooperative learning improved reading comprehension for both extroverted and introverted students. Extroverts benefited from the interactive and collaborative aspects of cooperative learning. Introverts, on the other hand, thrived in an environment that allowed for thoughtful participation and reflection. The results also suggest that personality traits moderate the effects of cooperative learning on reading comprehension. This study highlights the effectiveness of cooperative learning in enhancing reading comprehension for students with diverse personalities. It emphasizes the need for educators to consider individual characteristics when designing instructional strategies. By incorporating cooperative learning and acknowledging the influence of personality traits, educators can create more personalized and effective teaching practices that cater to the diverse needs of students in language classrooms.

Abstract

This study investigated students’ perceptions and anxiety concerning online learning and technology adaptation among 20 fourth-semester accounting students at Universitas Bhayangkara Jakarta Raya. Using a descriptive qualitative method, data were collected through questionnaires and interviews and analyzed with Likert scales and transcription analysis. The findings revealed that many students experienced concerns and anxiety during online learning. They needed more motivation for sessions conducted via Google Meet and Google Classroom, though the materials provided were often communicative. While students found it relatively easy to access supplementary materials, they perceived online learning as disorganized and struggled with flexibility in communication with lecturers due to their anxiety. Technical challenges, such as internet connectivity issues and limited data quotas, frequently distracted students and reduced their focus. These disruptions disrupted their perception of online learning, resulting in a lack of engagement and learning fatigue. Despite these challenges, students adopted technology and realized the importance of technology in their education. However, most participants felt offline learning was still more effective and engaging. Additionally, technical tasks must be considered more closely, and online education methods should be optimized more effectively to increase students’ interest and decrease stress levels. Despite its challenges, students showed a willingness to embrace technology for learning. These findings suggest that it is critical to find new ways of making online learning spaces less organized, meaningfully engaging, and more facilitative of the personal adjustments and coping needed by learners.

Abstract

Abstract

Purpose- This study aims to explore how Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) in Indonesia respond to the challenges of modernization, focusing on the balance between preserving traditional values and embracing educational innovation. Design/methods/approach- The research uses a qualitative descriptive approach by examining the philosophical foundation of al-muhafazhah ‘ala al-qadīm as-sālih wa al-akhdz bi al-jadīd al-aslah as a guiding principle for adaptation. Analysis centers on the role of the kiai as a key actor in decision-making and institutional resilience. Findings- The study finds that pesantren have demonstrated remarkable adaptability by integrating modern educational practices while preserving their religious and cultural heritage. The kiai plays a pivotal role in interpreting change, facilitating innovation selectively, and managing tensions between traditionalism and reform. This dynamic allows pesantren to remain relevant without losing their identity. Research Implications- The findings underscore the importance of maintaining a contextual and value-based approach in Islamic education reform. Understanding how pesantren synthesize conservatism with progressivism offers a model for educational institutions facing similar dilemmas in plural and rapidly evolving societies.

Abstract

Mental health among coastal communities remains a critical issue often overlooked by formal interventions. This community service activity aimed to enhance the psychological well-being of residents in Astapada Village, Gunungjati Subdistrict, Cirebon, using a positive psychology approach integrated with local cultural wisdom. The method used was a participatory community-based approach involving training in gratitude journaling, character strengths, and meaning therapy, combined with traditional arts practices such as mask dancing and batik making. Evaluation using the WHO-5 Wellbeing Index showed a significant increase in participants' psychological well-being scores, from an average of 43.77 to 66.40. Additionally, social initiatives emerged, including the formation of the “Rembug Jiwa” community and the rise of local leaders promoting program sustainability. These findings indicate that culturally contextualized positive psychology interventions can serve as effective strategies for improving mental health at the community level.

Abstract

This study investigates the effectiveness of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools, namely Grammarly, QuillBot, and Ginger Software, in providing automated feedback for English as a Foreign Language (EFL) writing among Indonesian undergraduate students. It examines the potential of these AI-powered applications in identifying and correcting grammatical, punctuation, and clarity issues and paraphrasing in student writing. This research applied a descriptive qualitative method involving document analysis and interviews. The study involved comparing these tools' corrective feedback and conducting interviews with EFL writing students to understand their perceptions of using these tools. The research findings indicate varying levels of error detection and correction suggestions across the tools, with some differences in their efficiency. While Grammarly, QuillBot, and Ginger Software show promise in enhancing EFL writing skills, the study highlights the importance of not solely relying on these tools. Key findings reveal that Grammarly excels in grammatical accuracy, QuillBot offers superior paraphrasing capabilities, and Ginger provides limited feedback in comparison.  It suggests that integrating AI feedback with traditional methods of teacher and peer reviews can lead to optimal writing outcomes. The paper also discusses students' perceptions of using these tools, noting a preference for Grammarly due to its simplicity and effectiveness. Students reported improved grammar and motivation but exhibited tendencies toward over-reliance, potentially limiting critical thinking and independent writing skills. However, some students exhibited over-reliance on these tools, potentially hindering their critical thinking and independent writing skills. The study emphasizes the importance of using AI-powered tools strategically, alongside human editing and critical thinking practices, to maximize EFL writing development.
