Abstract

ABSTRACT Smoking behavior among adolescents and college students remains a public health problem that contributes to an increased risk of non-communicable diseases. Various factors are thought to influence smoking behavior, including perceptions of the dangers of smoking, peer influence, and family support. Papuan students who migrated from other cities were selected as the study population because they face different social and cultural adaptation processes, have strong group interactions, and live far from their families, which have the potential to influence smoking behavior. This study aims to analyze the relationship between perceptions, peer influence, and family support with smoking behavior among students of the Papuan Student Association (IPMAPA) Tlogomas, Malang City. The study used a quantitative, observational, and analytical design with a descriptive approach cross-sectional. The research sample consisted of 70 respondents who were selected using the technique total sampling. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire and analyzed univariately and bivariately using the Chi-square test with a significance level of α = 0.05. The results of the study showed that 65,7% respondents had a high smoking behavior. The results showed that perception had no significant relationship with smoking behavior (p = 0.122). In contrast, peer influence (p = 0.012) and family support (p = 0.001) had a significant relationship with smoking behavior. Respondents with high peer influence and less family support tended to have higher smoking behavior than other respondents. Smoking behavior among Papuan students is more influenced by social environmental factors than individual perceptions of the dangers of smoking. Therefore, strengthening the role of the family, establishing a healthy social environment, and developing peer-based health promotion programs need to be prioritized as strategies to prevent smoking behavior in students.
