Abstract

A family are those people who play important parts in our loves. It is however, unfortunate, that due to ignorance or extreme cultures embedded, that harmful acts are imposed, in contravention to human rights and female reproductive rights. Among these practices are female circumcision, usually done at a young age (often toddlers) by cutting off the clitoris, based on religious or tradition, in order to “prevent” women becomingpromiscuous. This practice is still widespread in many areas including Kuntu, Kampar Regency, Riau Province. Carried out under the belief “adat basondi syara’, syra’ basondi kitabullah”, to be a muslim and a woman who is faithful to traditions and religion, they must be circumcised. Even when faced with the fact female circumcision is highly dangerous and is a aberration of women’s rights, many continue to engage in the practice. The family unit is a key part of this practice, as young women are under the control of their parents, which should have been a safe haven, perverted due to extreme taqlid. Consciously or not, this results in the deprivation the rights of women, who are yet to be aware of their very rights.

Abstract

Understanding common sense surrounding society where people act according to their interpretation toward hadith of the prophet as well Qur’anic verses and command is an essential meaning of living hadith. This paper begins with new alternative of perspective for living hadith, since there are obvious possible interpretations toward a hadith within a complex society that lead to various acts. In addition to that, the different act will be analyzed by Bourdieu’s theory of practice in order to see that the dynamic of practice in such society entail that complexity of interpretations. Female mutilation practice in Kuntu Darussalam village is the object of study in this paper, where majority of people has had perceived the practice asas an unquestioned Doxa for every individual, preached by Ulama repetitively. The latest agent plays assertively for his symbolic modal of the cultural village, unlike the secondary role (e.i. medical agent)who apprehensively stands for different habitus within the society.

Abstract

Circumcision of women has been criticized by World Health Organization (WHO), United Nations (UN) because this practice can affect woman’s health. However, circumcision is still can be found in communities around the world, such as in Africa, the UK, and certain Asian countries including Indonesia. Furthermore, this practice is considered part of Islamic teachings by most Muslims who practice it. This thought is based on the opinion of some classical Muslim scholars such as al-Syafi’i, Hanafi, and Hambali that refer to QS. an-Nahl(16): 123 and some hadiths such as Hadith of Ummu Athiyyah. This article discusses circumcision from a feminist Kiai perspective, Husein Muhammad. This research is a qualitative descriptive study with a literature study style and uses a gender approach. The results of this study indicate that Husein Muhammad interprets the law of female circumcision by prioritizing the principles of justice and gender equality. For him, circumcision is the result of the construction by classical Muslim scholars because there is nothing in the Qur'an or Hadith that can be used as argumentation that indicates its obligation of circumcision for women. In addition, female circumcision is damaging to health means this practice is also forbidden in Islam

Abstract

Female genital mutilation (FGM), widely criticized from various circles such as WHO and UN, remains prevalent until today. A village in Kampar regency, an area with a Muslim Majority, is one of the largest areas that implements circumcision in the provence of Riau. Women are conventionally seen as passive and uncritical actors in the perpetuation of this practice. This research attempts to reveal women’s agency in the practice of FGM. Based on more than a month of field research in the village in Kampar regency, this paper employs a descriptive-qualitative approach. Data were obtained using involved observations, interviews, and a review of local histories and customary law. Using Bourdieu’s structural genetic theory, this paper explains the ways in which different socially-located women use their agency to critically ingage with FGM practices within their specific arena. I argue that women—women as mothers, women as children, and women as medical personnel—are active and critical agents vis-a-vis FGM practices. Using the capital they have within the arena in which they live, women exercise their agencies in the different ways to achieve certain goals. Women with high capital in certain arenas, especially in the family, will have more ability to resist FGM. On the other hand, women with low capital can also negotiate to perform symbolic circumcision, even if the habitus associated with circumcision does not change. As medical professionals, midwives also exercise agency by refusing to perform FGM on girls, but if forced to do so , they will usually perform minor circumcisions to fulfill the habitus of the practice in a symbolic way.

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has erased the stereotype of the domestication of women with the status of women as housewives and career women, which has an impact on women’s double burden, namely doing domestic work and public work. This article aims to prove that the domestic sector has strengthened the existence of women. This research is descriptive qualitative by interviewing three career women in Yogyakarta. They were selected by direct pointing because these women can provide relevant information in this study. Indirect observations were carried out to explore information that was not conveyed at the time of the interview. Information from journals, websites, and newspapers was used to strengthen the data. The results showed that women’s ability to manage the household had an effect during the COVID-19 pandemic, namely the Work From Home (WFH) policy. Women’s domestic roles include women’s managerial abilities in utilizing home facilities such as the living room, family room, workspace, and even the kitchen room and mastery of home facilities such as Wi-Fi, laptops, and cellphones used by other family members. It also provides ample opportunity for women to demonstrate their ability to carry out domestic sector jobs such as cooking, protecting family members, and doing public work such as seminars, teaching, selling services, business, and forming social groups to help disaster victims. In line with that, the role of women in the domestic sector and public sector is balanced, thereby strengthening women’s existence during the COVID-19 pandemic.
