Abstract

ABSTRACTObesity is now recognized as one of most prevalent disease world-wide in both developed and developing countries. Body mass index (BMI) is the most simple and common index to describe body fat. Obesity can cause higher risk of cardiovascular disease, such as hypertension. The purpose of this study was to determine correlation between BMI and blood pressure. The design of this study was analytic cross sectional. Population of this study were all students of Medical Faculty of Riau University batch 2012 and 2013. Sampling technique used in this study was total sampling. Sample of this study were 242 students. The result of this study was 47,93% of subjects had normal BMI and 40,09% of subjects were overweight and obese. According to systolic blood pressure, 63,22% of subjects had normal systolic blood pressure and 36,78% of subjects were pre-hypertension and hypertension. According to diastolic blood pressure, 64,46% of subjects had normal systolic blood pressure and 35,54% of subjects were pre-hypertension and hypertension. This study showed there was significant positive correlation between BMI and blood pressure which the power of correlation was weak for BMI and systolic blood pressure (r = 0,302; p = 0,000) and the power of correlation was very weak for BMI and diastolic blood pressure (r = 0,171; p = 0,008).Keywords: body mass index, blood pressure

Abstract

Abstract

The Genetics module based on a learning management system (LMS) is a standalone website with an instructional design for self-study about genetic literacy. This module is expected to be useful for medical students of Universitas Riau (FK UNRI) from various class years to study at any time. The purpose of this study was to find comparative results of self-study of genetic modules based on LMS among UNRI's medical students in various class years and to determine effectiveness of genetics module based on learning management system among medical students of Universitas Riau. The research method was quantitative. The subjects were 34 UNRI's medical students who were taken proportionally from three class years. The research data was obtained using the UNC-GKS questionnaire. The results showed that the average pre-test scores for the first, second, and third years were 58, 58, and 63. The statistical test results for comparing the pre-test scores of these three class years gave no significant difference. The results of the average post-test scores for the first, second and third years were 58, 68, and 68. The results of the statistical test comparing the post-test scores of these three class years gave no significant difference also. The results of the Wilcoxon test was p < 0.02 which means that there was an increase in genetic literacy scores after FK UNRI students take genetic modules based on the learning management system for independent learning at FK UNRI. The conclusion was the self-study of the genetic module based on the LMS among UNRI's medical students gave no significant difference when viewed from the difference in the year of class. There was an increase in genetic literacy scores after FK UNRI students take a genetic module based on the learning management system for independent learning at FK UNRI. Therefore, UNRI 's medical students can study genetics module based on learning management system from various class years and at any time.

Abstract

A family medicinal plant is a group of plants that have health benefits for family health. However, its utilization should be increased. During the COVID-19 pandemic, public interest in traditional herbal medicine increases. Therefore, it has to be balanced with increased knowledge of family medicinal plants as well as knowledge of good practices in the utilization and care of the plants. Education and training of family medicinal plants were conducted for representatives of Sri Meranti District, Pekanbaru City, Riau. Education on types of family medicinal plants and how to properly utilize them was delivered online via the Zoom Meeting platform. The education was followed by training on how to plant and care for the family's medicinal plants. Participants were also given seedlings of family medicinal plants for their yards. After the education, participants’ knowledge of how to utilize family medicinal plants increased. With the increased knowledge as well as the seedlings provided, people in the Sri Meranti district are expected to cultivate and utilize family medicinal plants properly.

Abstract

Fasting is a form of non-pharmacological intervention to improve health. One of the sunnah fastings that is often done is fasting Monday and Thursday. There is still little research on the benefits of this sunnah fasting. This study is a quasi-experimental study to determine the effect of sunnah fasting on Mondays and Thursdays on body composition, blood pressure, and blood glucose levels. The research subjects were 19 Riau University students who were willing to fast every Monday and Thursday for 4 consecutive weeks (8 days of fasting), were healthy, and did not smoke. Measurement of research parameters was carried out before and after fasting. The results of this study showed differences in the average values of body composition (weight, body mass index, upper arm circumference, waist circumference, waist-hip ratio), systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, and blood glucose levels before and after fasting. The results of statistical analysis with paired t-test there were significant differences in the average values of upper arm circumference, waist circumference, diastolic blood pressure, and blood glucose levels before and after fasting (p 0.05), but there was no significant difference in body weight, index body mass, waist-to-hip ratio, and systolic blood pressure before and after fasting (p 0.05). There is an effect of Monday and Thursday sunnah fasting on upper arm circumference, waist circumference, diastolic blood pressure, and blood glucose levels.
