Abstract

Papua is rich with cultural heritages: hundreds of vernacular languages, tribes, folklores and other unique traditions. Unfortunately, these heritages are not recognized by the young generation anymore. Modernization, technology, and new comers are assumed as the background. As the capital of the province, Jayapura is the most influenced place for the changes. As an attempt to re-introduce and preserve the ancestor’s cultural heritages, cultural infusion in learning English (as one type of learning) is regarded important. From seven tribes living in Jayapura, as the first step, Sentani is chosen as the priority. This paper discusses English learning materials by infusing Sentani culture. Folktales are chosen as learning materials for Elementary School students, malo[1] for Junior High School students, the procedure to make kayi/ifa[2] for Senior High Schoo students.  This infusion hopes that young generation is able to learn English as well as to acknowledge one of the cultural heritages of Papua. They can be strongly rooted in their culture and respect others’ culture.DOI: https://doi.org/10.24071/llt.2017.200105

Abstract

Community Service Activities regarding environmental-based education, as an effort to increase community awareness of the quality of the environment, but also a form of concern for the service team from Cenderawasih University towards environmental problems which are increasingly less controlled along the Acai River. Through environment-based education, we can form souls who have high environmental awareness. Starting from the lower and middle classes of society, it is hoped that they will become agents of change. Through outreach activities and using environmental campaign media through songs and calls for environmental safety, it is hoped that it can inspire the community so that the community can become an agent of change for the environment in the future. This Community Service activity aims to shape the mindset and concern of the community in promoting environmental care movements to create clean, comfortable and healthy conditions starting from providing education on the importance of keeping the environment clean, recognizing and classifying the types of waste in the area, how to use waste, planting plants in one's own environment, and environmental campaigns through songs and calls for the safety of the environment and the earth. Environmental cleanliness must come from the family environment so that it forms a far-sighted mindset and will become an agent of change in their environment through healthy lifestyle education programs.

Abstract

Papuan children generally like hearing and reading stories with Papuan backgrounds. Unfortunately, there are not many children stories of this kind. Therefore, we feel it is necessary to train elementary school principals and teachers in Jayapura Municipality to write children stories. The aim of this activity is to train principals and teachers (a) to write children stories with Papuan background, (b) understand the stages of writing children stories, (c) to be able to infuse nature and culture and (d) to rewrite folkltales in children language. This activity was carried out in Horison Hotel Padang Bulan in February 2024 and involved teams from Cenderawasih University and the Papua Province Language Center. There were twenty teachers and principals from various elementary schools in Jayapura Municipality attended this training. The team worked together to prepare material about the importance of children stories, the structure of children stories, story grading and story boards. The team also involved Tobati and Skouw language translators because several children stories were translated into those languages. The end of this activity shows that the teachers (1) are able to create children stories with a Papuan background using the rules they have learned; (2) are able to produce children stories based on the reading grades. Besides, translation of the stories into Tobati and Skouw languages can be executed as well.Through this training the principals and teachers are able to produce contextual children story books.  Keywords: contextual Papuan children stories; children book leveling; language preservation; Tobati language; Skouw language
