Abstract

This paper is based on the use of effective sentence-making rules in Indonesian language teaching which reads: subject and object should not be given a preposition. Sentences whose subject is preceded by a preposition are deemed ineffective / ungrammatical. Onthe other hand, the preposition is obligatory to express the role of locative, instrument, comitative, etc.. Under certain conditions the preposition is optional. For example, in the sentence Anjing itu dipukul (oleh) Ali. The problem are: (i) what is the preposition function in Indonesian grammar? (ii) at what position can the preposition be deleted? (iii) why are these prepositions be deleted? To answer the problem, the clause will be analyzed from the predicate and argument base. Arguments are distinguished from nonargument. Prepositions in the Indonesian language are used to distinguish arguments and non arguments, and determine the role of semantic constituent clauses. Prepositions may be fixed in (i) positions behind the direct verb, and (ii) the semantic role is obvious. The reason for this clear semantic role that makes the preposition can be wiped out.

Abstract

Language is used by humans to communicate and express their ideas as well as feelings, which can be done through literary works such as a song. A song conveys an idea and/or a feeling through its lyrics. In a song, the lyrics may contain various metaphors that carry contextual meaning in order to convey a feeling and emotion. Thus, people may have different interpretation of a song. This applies to all kinds of songs, such as the longer version of Taylor Swift's song, "All Too Well". Therefore, this research will discuss 1) the meaning of the metaphors in the song to help create a better storytelling and 2) the type of metaphors used in the song. The metaphors found in this song will be analysed using Ullman’s theory on metaphors. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative method because this research will describe the results of this research instead of depict them through numbers. The data in this research is the metaphors found in the song, and the sampling technique for this data is purposive sampling. This technique is chosen because this technique help supplies the data needed to answer the problems of this research. In relations to the aims of this research, there are 26 metaphors found to be used in this song; 3 anthropomorphic metaphors, 1 animal metaphor, 19 concrete to abstract metaphors, and 3 synesthetic metaphors. The use of these metaphors is intended not only so the story in the song can be better delivered to the listeners to make it more captivating, but also for the listeners to be able to understand the depths of emotions the song-writer wished to convey in the song. Therefore, the metaphors have significant influences in the act of storytelling through the lyrics of the song.

Abstract

As there has not been research specifically focused on the meanings of intransitive-based applicatives in bahasa Indonesia, this research was carried out as an effort to uncover the meanings of Indonesian intransitive-based applicative constructions. To reach the goal, we use Dixon’s framework of four broad categorizations of applicative meanings (2012). The research is descriptive and qualitative in nature, and the approach used is that of structural typology. Data were collected using library research, document analysis, and purposive sampling. Intransitive-based applicatives in bahasa Indonesia has four meanings; they, ordered based on the frequency of occurences, are locative, stimulus for a stative verb (G-stimulus), stimulus for corporeal activities (G-corporeal), and comitative. There are, however, -kan intransitive-based applicative constructions that cannot neatly fall into Dixon’s meaning categorization. We then proposed another applicative meaning of -kan, as is suggested by Sneddon et al. (2010). In conclusion, we hold that Dixon’s categorization of applicative meanings is a framework quite exhaustive to understand the semantic elements of Indonesian transitive-based applicatives.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the criticizing speech act strategies employed by beauty vloggers in makeup product reviews on social media. The research adopts a descriptive qualitative method with a sociopragmatic approach. The data consist of utterances containing criticizing speech acts produced by beauty vloggers in makeup review videos uploaded on YouTube and TikTok. The data sources were obtained from the channels of Affi Assegaf, Suhay Salim, Fatya Biya, Lifni Sanders, and Kiara Leswara, as well as the TikTok accounts of Reizuka Ari and Jovi Adhiguna. Data were collected by downloading the videos, transcribing the utterances orthographically, and classifying them based on Nguyen’s criticizing speech act strategies and Blum-Kulka’s speech act components. The findings reveal that beauty vloggers employ two major criticizing strategies, namely direct and indirect criticism. Direct criticism is expressed through explicit negative evaluations of product features, while indirect criticism is conveyed through mitigated expressions such as comparisons, suggestions, or compliments used as balancing devices. Furthermore, the criticism sequences demonstrate a recurring pattern consisting of pre-criticizing, main criticizing, and post-criticizing stages, which function to maintain politeness and interpersonal rapport in social media communication. These findings indicate that beauty vloggers strategically balance evaluative judgments and politeness considerations when delivering criticism to their audiences.
