Abstract

The Yemeni EFL learners are prone to share their knowledge and views regarding what and how to say. The constraints of combining this expertise have hampered learners’ writing success. Those obstacles can cause learners to make errors. Error Analysis (EA) and Surface Strategy Taxonomy (SST) were used to analyze learners’ linguistic errors. Error causes were also investigated. This research used a qualitative process style to use a case study approach. Ellis’ five-step EA procedure was followed to analyze essay data each comprising 100-350 words or more written by 20 Yemeni EFL eighth semester Arabic-speaking learners at the Department of Education, Sana’a University, Yemen. They were purposely selected as research subjects. It was noticed that omission was the most common error detected in the learners’ writings. Overall, this form of error accounted for 58.71% of 118 cases out of 201 cases. The learners’ common error categories were the number marker, verb-tenses articles, prepositions, subject-verb agreements, and pronouns. This was preceded by addition (20.39%), incorrect formation (15.92%), and word order (4.97%). Intralingual transfer turned out to be the key reason that caused the errors in the learners’ writing. Any of the interlinguistic comparisons was the cause behind the errors. In terms of verb conjugation component, inflectional morpheme, and auxiliary verb abandonment, Arabic and English have different formal definitions. Interlingual transfer and learning context also caused errors. To prevent errors from fossilizing, language instructors should provide continual corrective feedback, and learners should pursue the correct target language form.

Abstract

Abstract

Sarcasm, as a weaponised form of politeness, poses one of the most intricate challenges in translation, its meaning concealed beneath civility, its intent barbed with social critique. This study investigates the rendering of such utterances, specifically mock politeness or off-record impoliteness, in the Indonesian fan-subtitled version of the movie Freedom Writers. Drawing on Culpeper’s impoliteness theory, the research identifies 42 instances of mock politeness and examines the translation techniques used, following Molina and Albir’s taxonomy. Translation accuracy is evaluated using Nababan et al.’s assessment framework. The findings indicate a strong reliance on Established Equivalence (65.5%) and Variation (18.3%), reflecting the translators’ preference for natural target-language expressions. Out of the 42 utterances, 40 translations (95.2%) were deemed accurate, with one less accurate and one inaccurate instance, both involving a loss of pragmatic force. These results demonstrate that most sarcastic utterances were successfully transferred across languages and cultures, though certain subtleties, particularly tone and speaker intent, remained vulnerable to distortion. The study offers fresh insight into the complexities of pragmatic translation within non-professional audiovisual contexts and underscores the importance of sensitivity to sociocultural nuance in rendering indirect impoliteness effectively. The research illustrates how fan translators navigate fidelity and naturalness in the presence of covert impoliteness and demonstrates that in non-professional settings, high accuracy is possible when there is an intuitive preservation of pragmatic intent, providing evidence for the need for pragmatic awareness in audiovisual translation.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze how the cooperative principle is translated in the response utterances of a character with Tourette syndrome in the novel Motherless Brooklyn. The research uses a descriptive qualitative method with a product-oriented focus. The data sources include the novel itself and raters who evaluate the translation. The data consist of linguistic features and aspects of translation. Data were collected through document analysis and Focus Group Discussions (FGD). The study applies an ethnographic approach, using Spradley’s method for data analysis. The findings reveal that the utterances influenced by Tourette syndrome result in noticeable shifts in translation. Two primary patterns of conversational maxim violations were identified. The first pattern is caused by the symptoms of Tourette syndrome, including echolalia, coprolalia, and palilalia, which disrupt typical patterns of speech. The second pattern involves deliberate maxim violations driven by specific communicative intentions. These findings highlight the complexity of translating neurodivergent speech and emphasize the importance of contextual and pragmatic awareness in maintaining the speaker’s original meaning and intent.

Abstract

Language plays a crucial role not only as a means of communication but also as a reflection of the values and character of society. In the context of youth mosque da'wah, the use of polite language is crucial because it influences the effectiveness of conveying religious messages and shaping the morals of listeners. This study aims to examine the application of the principles of polite language in youth mosque da'wah in Karanganyar Regency and efforts to improve it through training activities. The method used was a qualitative approach with observation techniques, semi-structured interviews, and documentation. Data analysis was carried out in three stages: data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions interactively. The results of the activity showed a significant increase in the participants' understanding and practice of polite language after attending the training. Based on the questionnaire results, participants' post-test scores increased compared to the pre-test, indicating the effectiveness of the training in strengthening their understanding of the concept of polite speech. Furthermore, observations of da'wah practices showed positive changes in the use of more polite, structured, and empathetic language. This activity not only improved participants' communication skills but also raised awareness of the importance of language ethics in da'wah. Thus, this language politeness training contributes to the character development of mosque youth, helping them become moral, communicative, and civilized young preachers. It is hoped that similar activities can be developed to a more advanced level in the future to strengthen the application of politeness in religious communication among youth.
