Abstract

New patients frequently experience fear or anxiety due to the unfamiliarity of the hospital environment, a phenomenon particularly evident among those with LABC. The introduction of welcome book serves as a potential intervention to enhance patient knowledge and alleviate anxiety. This study evaluates the effectiveness of a welcome book in enhancing patient knowledge and reducing anxiety levels. A case study at a hospital involved a 42-year-old patient with LABC. The study examined the patient's orientation using a welcome book that covered various aspects such as orientation of persons, places, facilities, rules, and educational resources. The patient's knowledge was assessed with a knowledge evaluation sheet, and anxiety levels were measured using the Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale. The welcome book provided comprehensive information to enhance patient understanding and reduce anxiety. The patient’s pretest knowledge score was 20, which increased to 86.67 after using the welcome book, indicating a substantial improvement. Initially, the patient exhibited mild anxiety upon admission, but after four days of utilizing the welcome book, there was a significant reduction in anxiety levels. The implementation of welcome book for a new patient orientation significantly enhanced the knowledge and reduced the anxiety levels of patient with LABC. This study underscores the importance of comprehensive orientation materials, such as welcome books, in improving patient outcome and suggest hospitals to adopt similar strategies to enhance patient education adn reduce anxiety.

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus sufferers experience disturbances in the system of regulating blood sugar levels, insulin is not sufficient to cope so that blood sugar levels increase. This causes patients to require long-term care, so they must be given discharge planning. This research aims to analyze the effectiveness of implementing discharge planning in diabetes mellitus patients to increase patient readiness to go home in the Cempaka Room at Bali Mandara Hospital. The research method used univariate descriptive analysis, and the sample used was in accordance with predetermined inclusion and exclusion criteria and then one respondent was selected. The research results showed that a 61-year-old patient with a diagnosis of diabetes mellitus who met the criteria was given discharge planning and measured using the adult Indonesian version of the patient discharge readiness scale instrument. The pre-test results showed that the patient's readiness level for discharge was 49.52% with a total score of 104 (level II). After implementing discharge planning, the level of patient readiness for discharge increased to 64.28% with a total score of 135 (level III). The implementation of patient discharge planning has proven to be effective in increasing patient discharge readiness, as evidenced by an increase in patient discharge readiness from level II to level III. Therefore, in providing nursing care, it is necessary to pay attention to the patient's detailed needs and fulfill them by implementing discharge planning so that patients have a good level of readiness to go home to reduce recurrence, complications, and patient readmissions.

Abstract

Post-hospitalization represents a critical transitional period in which patients must regain independence in fulfilling their basic needs. However, many experience persistent limitations after discharge due to inadequate education, lack of caregiver support, or reduced functional capacity. Guided by Virginia Henderson’s Nursing Need Theory, this study explored the fulfillment of basic needs among post-hospitalized patients and its associated factors. A cross-sectional study was conducted among 169 recently discharged adult patients from a public hospital in East Java, Indonesia. Data were collected using the Camberwell Assessment of Needs (CAN) , developed based on Henderson’s 14 fundamental needs. Independent variables included age, education, hospital length of stay, discharge education, and caregiver presence. Descriptive statistics, Chi-square tests, and multivariate logistic regression were used for data analysis. Approximately 37.9% of patients demonstrated high fulfillment of basic needs, while 25.4% had low fulfillment, particularly in hygiene, mobility, and rest domains. Logistic regression identified caregiver presence (AOR = 2.90, 95% CI = 1.70–4.95, p < 0.001) and discharge education (AOR = 2.40, 95% CI = 1.38–4.17, p = 0.002) as the strongest predictors of high need fulfillment. Higher education levels also increased likelihood (AOR = 1.60, p = 0.04), whereas age >50 years reduced it (AOR = 0.60, p = 0.03). The study confirms that discharge education and caregiver involvement significantly enhance post-hospitalization self-care independence. Nurses should integrate structured discharge teaching and caregiver training within transitional care models to ensure comprehensive fulfillment of patients’ basic needs, consistent with Henderson’s theory. Keywords: basic needs, post-hospitalization, Virginia Henderson theory, discharge education, caregiver support, nursing independence

Abstract

Happiness at work (HAW) plays a critical role in nurses’ performance and their ability to deliver compassionate care, as it affects nurses’ motivation, empathy, and caring behavior. However, culturally grounded interventions to improve nurses’ happiness, particularly within Islamic spiritual frameworks, remain underexplored. Therefore, this study examined the effect of an Islamic-based spiritual program based on local religious and cultural values on nurses’ HAW. This research employed a quasi-experimental design with a non-equivalent control group. The intervention included a structured religious talk on the meaning of life and daily listening to Quranic recitations (murottal) during work for four weeks. The study involved 64 inpatient nurses from hospitals. The participants were assigned to an intervention group (n = 32) and a control group (n = 32). Data were collected using the Shortened HAW questionnaire and analyzed using repeated-measures ANOVA and the Kruskal–Wallis test. The results showed that happiness scores increased significantly in the intervention group (mean difference = 1.53, p < 0.001; η² = 0.354). In contrast, the control group showed minimal change. These findings indicate that Islamic-based spiritual programs can effectively enhance nurses’ happiness at work and may contribute to nurse retention, strengthen caring values, and improve healthcare quality.
