Abstract

One of the islands in Indonesia which has both tourist and mining interests is Belitung Island. Belitung Island is an island between Kalimantan Island and Bangka Island. The history of Belitung is said to have existed since the time of the Majapahit Kingdom, while in the Islamic Belitung era it had four kingdoms, namely: the Balok Kingdom (the oldest and largest), Belantu Kingdom, Badau Kingdom, and Buding Kingdom. This study aims to reveal the existence of Islam on Belitung Island, and this is because Belitung Island has many Islamic treasures, some of which have not been disclosed. This research uses explorative and expansive methods. Islam entered Belitung around the end of the 16th century. In the 17th century, Islam in Belitung became an institution of political power with the establishment of the four kingdoms. Sources about the arrival of Islam on the island of Belitung have a variety of stories that developed in the community, and each source is supported by the data on the tombstone findings in several places on the island of Belitung. Assumptions about who spread various versions start from Aceh, Minangkabau, Palembang, Islamic Mataram, Majapahit, Cirebon, Banten, Gresik, and Banjar.

In addition, the network of Hadhramaut Ulama with Nusantara has an intellectual impact, such as the book Safinatun najah by Sheikh Salim bin Sumair received appreciation by giving explanations and commentary by Nusantara Ulama. The Habib in Tarim still has a strong da'wah influence in Indonesia, especially after the first 30 students of Darul Musthofa became alumni and established ta'lim assembly or pesantren. Hadhramaut pesantren network is connected through santri (student) who studied at Darul Musthofa, Rubath Tarim, and al-Ahgaff University. Abstract

This article explores the socio-intellectual history of Islam in Palembang, spanning from the Sultanate era to the colonial period. Employing a qualitative historical approach and library research, the study examines the evolution of Islamic scholarly networks, the pivotal role of local ulama, and the influence of Dutch colonial policies on religious education. Primary sources include manuscripts authored by Sheikh Abdussamad al-Palimbani, royal Sultanate documents, and Dutch colonial archives. Data were analyzed thematically using a historical-hermeneutic framework and source criticism to ensure textual authenticity and contextual accuracy. The findings demonstrate that Palembang functioned as a major intellectual hub in Sumatra, shaped by the dynamic interplay between local Islamic authority, transregional ulama networks, and the pressures of colonial administration. This study contributes to the historiography of Malay-Islamic scholarship by highlighting the adaptive resilience of religious intellectual traditions amid shifting political regimes.
