Abstract

During the translation of IADC Workover Completion Manual, especially the compound-complex sentences, grammatical equivalence is crucial in order to produce accurate, acceptable, and readable translations. Therefore, this study is conducted to evaluate the realization of grammatical equivalence in English–Indonesian translation of compound-complex sentences in the manual and its relation to the translation quality. This study is a descriptive qualitative study. The researcher used document to collect the data of the compound-complex sentences. Besides, questionnaire and interview were completed by the target readers and the expert readers to assess the translation quality. The findings presents that out of 106 English compound-complex sentences that are translated to Indonesian, 74 (69.8%) of them are grammatically equivalent and 32 (30.1%) of them are not grammatically equivalent. It means that the 74 sentence translations’ structures are equivalent. In addition, the translations are literal and there are no shifts. In contrast, 32 non-grammatical equivalent translations are due to their free translations and lead to the translation shifts. From the findings, it can also be concluded that the grammatical equivalence influences the accuracy, the acceptability, and the readability of the translations for the target readers. On the other hand, for the expert readers, the grammatical equivalence only affects readability.

Abstract

The wundu watu plant (Alpinia monopleura), is one of the endemic plants typical of Southeast Sulawesi which is commonly found in South Konawe Regency. The results of previous research on the essential oil content of the leaves and fruit of wundu watu are α-caryophyllene, β-pinene, limonene, α-pinene, β-caryophyllene and caryophyllene oxide. The essential oils of the leaves and fruit show antibacterial, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Pharmacological studies of this plant are not widely known, especially its efficacy as an anti-inflammatory. The purpose of this study was to determine the anti-inflammatory potential of extracts and fractions of wundu watu stem against inhibition of protein denaturation in Vitro. Wundu watu stem extract was extracted by maceration method using methanol solvent and ethyl acetate fraction. Anti-inflammatory testing using the protein denaturation inhibitor method using bovine and albumin and measured on a UV-Vis Spectrophotometer at a wavelength of 660 nm. The results showed that the extract and ethyl acetate fraction of wundu watu stem had anti-inflammatory activity with IC50 values of 10.59 mg/L and 2.02 mg/L. Based on the test results, it can be concluded that the stem extract of wundu watu has anti-inflammatory potential against protein denaturation with a very strong category.

Historical non-human elements are reflected in the phenomenon of destruction of Kulon Progo land elements and phenomena of environmental destruction such as the burning of houses and patrol posts in coastal villages. The legitimacy of the interests of non-human elements towards humans is reflected in the fact that plants provide success with the abundant harvests of the Kulon Progo community and sand provides a connection between the community and the environment. Human responsibility for nature is reflected in the Kulon Progo community making various efforts such as physical responsibility, intellectual responsibility, and spiritual responsibility. The dynamics of nature are reflected in the occurrence of negative dynamics, namely the conversion of coastal land into iron sand mining areas and positive dynamics, namely land conversion. The shaky and barren land became fertile agricultural land.

Abstract

Gramsci's hegemony study offers an innovative perspective on literature, which does not merely reflect class structures, but also has autonomous social, political and cultural dimensions. The short story Mata Celurit represents the local political reality of Madura, especially in the village head election, which is full of power struggles and cunning intrigues. This research is based on descriptive qualitative method, with the main object of Mata Celurit short story published on Kompas website. The unit of analysis used in this research refers to Gramsci's theory of hegemony, which is associated with the political phenomenon of Madurese society in the local democratic event, namely the election of kalebun (village head). The primary source of this research is the short story Mata Celurit, which is strengthened by secondary sources in the form of master books, journal articles, and relevant research. The researcher acts as a key instrument in the process of analysing the short story. The data collection technique is done through reading and note-taking, literature review, and data tabulation. Furthermore, the tabulated data was analysed in depth using the discourse analysis method. To ensure the validity of the data, researchers applied data triangulation techniques. Based on the results and discussion, it was found that ideological domination exercised by the political community to hegemonise civil society includes tyrannical power, material as a political instrument, covert threat actions, religious legitimacy, and political manipulation and intimidation. Meanwhile, the ideological domination of civil society includes opposing political dynasties and obedience to the ruling authority. Through the resulting discourse, Mata Celurit presents the phenomenon of percaton land as an issue that influences hegemony. Gramsci's analysis of hegemony reflects that the author not only presents a person (society), but also serves to reveal the hegemony exercised in political contestation in the village in Madurese society. This research can be an inspiration for the community, academics, and writers to be more sensitive to hegemonic practices that occur in the surrounding environment, especially in the context of village politics in Madura. Mata Celurit short story can be used as a critical literacy media to increase public awareness about the importance of understanding and criticising the domination of power.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the labeling process in Leila S. Chudori's novel Namaku Alam (My Name is Alam) related to the main character's status as a child of the Indonesian Communist Party (PKI), deviance, and its impact, using Howard S. Becker's labeling theory. The method used is qualitative with a sociology of literary texts (soteksas) approach. Data were obtained through library research and in-depth reading, with the researcher as the main instrument. The unit of analysis includes linguistic and contextual elements that represent the labeling process. The analysis was carried out through the stages of label identification, narrative interpretation, application of Becker's theory (stigma construction, articulation of deviation, and identity response), and connection with the social context. The results show that the character Alam received stigmatic labels such as "bastard child," "traitor," and "itchy widow child" from various social actors, such as teachers, friends, and family. The accumulation of these labels forms a deviant identity, causes psychological stress, and encourages deviant behavior, such as laziness and violence. The impact is seen in the hampered education due to the "clean environment" program and the failure of romantic relationships due to political stigma. These findings suggest that labeling in literary texts reflects social mechanisms that coercively shape identities and limit individual mobility in society.
