Abstract

Telek Melampahan Dance is one of the sacred dances originating from Lembongan Village. This dance was created by Alm. I Wayan Rawit because of a pawesik from relatives in Nusa Lembongan. This dance is danced every 6 months during Kuningan Day. This research that focuses on the Telek Melampahan Dance in Lembongan Village has 2 problems with the main study, namely (1) How does the Telek Melampahan Dance form in Nusa Lembongan, (2) How does the Telek Melampahan Dance function in Nusa Lembongan. The theory used to dissect the two problems is the aesthetic theory by Djelantik and the functional theory by Soedarsono and Sumandiyo Hadi. This research is a qualitative descriptive study in terms of performing arts studies using interview data collection techniques, observation, documentation and literature study. The results of this study indicate that this dance is different from the Telek Dance in general. The Telek Melampahan Dance is inspired by the Telek Jumpai Dance in Klungkung. The performance takes the story from the Lontar Nandha tattwa with an even number of Telek dancers, 2 jauk dancers and 5 dancers of Pura Dalem figures (Barong, Rarung, Baka, and Sang Hyang Baerawi). Judging from the variety of movements and clothing used, it is still very simple. The place where it is performed is also different from the Telek Dance in general which is danced in temples, but this dance is danced at Catus Pata in Lembongan Village. This dance was created with a function as a ritual means of repelling reinforcements. Before this dance is performed, stakeholders will offer offerings in the form of segehan, pejati and pemmbleh at Catus Pata, Lembongan Village. In addition, this dance can also be said as a means of communication to build solidarity for the people of Lembongan Village.

Abstract

Sky Maps is a contemporary dance work inspired by constellations. A constellation is a collection of stars connected into a pattern in the sky. In addition to predicting luck, the uses of constellations include, among others, as a sign for planting time, and also used as navigation or directions for fishermen at sea. Constellations can also be used to determine the cardinal directions in each direction east, south, west, north have their own constellations. The constellations consist of the Scorpio constellation, the Kite constellation, the hunter constellation, and the thunder constellation. This work focuses on the shape of each constellation transformed into dance movements according to the imagination of the stylist with his creativity. The process of creating Sky Maps uses the method of Alma M. Hawkins in her book Creating Through Dance translated by Y. Sumandiyo Hadi into the book Creating Through Dance, which mentions three important stages in the formation of dance works, namely, the exploration stage, the experimental stage (improvisation), and the forming stage. The Sky Maps dance work is danced by eight male dancers who are packaged into a contemporary dance form with a duration of approximately 14 minutes. The Sky Maps dance work uses MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) music in which there are several electronic music instruments to support the atmosphere in this dance work. This work uses fantasy makeup with clothing that uses a white jumpsuit (strait full body) with a combination of navy blue and uses reflective strips (scothlite) which are arranged in such a way in one dancer's outfit. The effect of the reflector strip (scothlite) itself reflects light when illuminated and will emit light when in the dark. Besides having a uniqueness that lies in the idea and concept, another uniqueness also lies in the movement called Nyiku Lintang.

Abstract

Result is a contemporary dance work whose idea comes from dice. The creator has an interest in the form of a number game and the clash of dice which results in an uncertain number value, and is poured into the dance work Result. In the method of creating this dance work, the creator found a gambling game method that was applied spontaneously by both dancers and musicians with dice media, the creator wanted to visualize it in a dance work to try or experiment on dice media. Do not forget that the creators also used Jacqueline Smith's dance creation method, called the construction method. The construction method consists of five stages, namely I to V, each of which has a stage in the process of creating a dance work.

Abstract

This research departs from the lack of scholarly exploration into how mythological figures like Waruna can function as aesthetic sources in contemporary Balinese performing arts. Waruna, known in Hindu-Balinese mythology as the god of water and the ocean, symbolizes cosmic harmony between nature and human life. This study aims to analyze how Waruna’s symbolism contributes to the aesthetic construction of the colossal dance performance Waruna Rakta Samasta, particularly in terms of form, meaning, and presentation. Employing a qualitative method, the research integrates Djelantik’s aesthetic theory focused on form, weight, and appearance, and a hermeneutic approach to interpret symbolic meaning. Data were collected through direct observation of the performance and literature studies. Findings reveal that Waruna's symbolism is not only embodied in visual elements like the Borobudur outrigger boat, lighting, and video mapping, but also in movement and music, producing an immersive maritime experience. The aesthetic is enriched with spiritual and philosophical messages that align with the Balinese Tri Hita Karana values. This study contributes to the development of colossal performing arts in Bali by offering a contemporary reinterpretation of traditional symbols and providing a model for integrating mythological aesthetics into modern performance practice.
