Gender issue in a pesantren (Islamic Boarding House) is a part of larger gender issues in Indonesia,either in education or religion. The main indicator of gender issue in pesantren is a striking gap betweenmen and women. Themes related to this issue actually are not new for novels in Indonesia. Some novelsrelated to pesantren usually portray women as helplessness, subordinate, inferior, and marginalized.However, in Perempuan Berkalung Sorban (PBS) novel, the author tried to empower women throughhis writings. Women in PBS novel was portrayed as smart, brave, and critical towards pesantren’shegemony such as power relation between santri (students) and kiai (teachers), the understanding ofclassical books (Kitab Kuning), social relations between men and women in pesantren, and so forth

Abstract: Gender issue in pesantren (or Islamic Boarding School) is a part of larger gender problem in Indonesia, either in education and in religion. The main indicator of this problem is vivid gap between males and females. This issue is actually not a new thing for there are a bunch of Indonesian novels serve it. Those novels touching pesantren in the theme usually put the women as a powerless, subordinated, inferior, marginalized person. However, the novel Perempuan Berkalung Sorban(PBS) tries to empower women. In the novel, the woman is portrayed as brilliant, brave, and also critical toward the pesantren hegemony such as: the power relation between santri (students) and kiai (teachers), the understanding on classical books (kitab kuning), social relation between men and women in pesantren ciircumstances, and many more. The hegemony of the Islamic boarding school (pesantren) has been related to the power of a Kiai. Nowadays, it has been changed by gender equality between Nyai and Kiai in Islamic boarding schools. A Kiai or Nyai can play a role inside or outside of the Islamic boarding school (pesantren). The role of the Kiai as a teacher, caretaker, and owner of the Islamic boarding school (pesantren) is quite dominant. In fact, it is found that a Nyai can also play a role in the development of education, economy, and relations in Islamic boarding schools (pesantren). This study applied a qualitative method with a phenomenological-constructionist approach. Data Collection Techniques were conducted by observation, interview, and documentation. The research results explained that the roles equality of Kiai and Nyai are obtained through a process of adaptation and the existence of space allowing the division of tasks between Kiai and Nyai as the efforts in developing Islamic boarding schools (pesantren).

The Rentang Kisah film is adapted from a best-selling novel which outlines the life journey of a Gita Savitri Devi. The purpose of this study is to describe the meaning of Life Goals in the film of Rentang Kisah through the analysis of Tzvetan Todorov's model. In this study, two problems were found, namely: first, how is the storyline of the film of Rentang Kisah examined through Tzevetan Todorov's analytical knife; and second, how the meaning of life goals in the film of Rentang Kisah is described in Tzvetan Todorov's narrative analysis. This researcher found several data findings that the storyline of the film of Rentang Kisah is depicted through 3 narrative lines in terms of the analysis of Tzvetan Todorov's model. There are 7 meanings of life goals found in the film texts studied, which include 4 meanings of life goals in the middle plot, and 3 meanings of life goals in the final plot. However, there is no life goals meaning in the beginning plot of the film.

This study describes the changing function of two Islamic presses, namely Medan Moeslimin and Islam Bergerak, in Surakarta, Central Java, Indonesia, in the transition of the 19th and 20th centuries. By historical methods through newspaper archival sources, the study produced conclusions; first, these two media were initially used as a means to “defend Islam” from some articles in the media that blasphemed Islam and, at the same time, straightened it out. In addition, the two Islamic media became an alternative source of Islamic scholarship, especially among reformist-modernist Muslims. Second, the two media were loaded with ideological interests. In their development, they had shifted their orientation from “defenders of Islam” to defenders of the spirit of nationality and universal humanity. Third, the change in orientation was inseparable from the critical role of Hadji Mohammad Misbach (1876-1926), the owner and manager of the two media, who experienced an ideological shift from orthodox Muslim towards socialist and nationalist one at once.

Islamic boarding school (Pondok pesantren) is an effective media to transform religious and cultural values. The holistic educational system design of Islamic boarding school is able to internalize some important values to santri (Islamic boarding schools students). The tolerance on the pluralism of religiosity is an important value for the moslem young generation in facing differences. The pluralism can be grown up by using some educational activities, including muhadlaroh (training of speech). The research focuses on the religious material related to pluralism in understanding religion delivered by the students of PP. Al-Muayyad and PP. Takmirul Islam Surakarta in their speeches when joining the muhadharoh. By qualitative approach, the data analysis reveals that the students of PP. Al-Muayyad and PP. Takmirul Islam Surakarta has good understanding on the pluralism of religiosity.

The transformation of The State Institute for Islamic Studies (IAIN) towards State Islamic University (UIN) Surakarta is understood as a strategic step to improve the quality of the institution's education. IAIN Surakarta needs to fix several factors, both internal and external, in order to maintain its existence as a public institution in the implementation of Islamic Higher Education. The dilemma faced in the transformation of IAIN towards UIN is the dualism-dichotomic phenomenon of science developed. The research method used is descriptive qualitative. This research was conducted from June 14, 2017 to September 12, 2017. The data was collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. The data were analyzed by descriptive analysis with inductive thinking methods. Based on the results of the study, it was concluded that: 1) Surakarta IAIN needs to develop general study programs as well as integration between general science and Islam, including KPI Study Programs; 2) the development of study programs at IAIN Surakarta is important in order to accelerate the transformation into UIN Surakarta; 2) the rapid trend of media development needs to be addressed by the Surakarta IAIN.

Giving halal certification for many products is a guarantee that products is safe for consumption by a Muslim people. But media tend to using religion value to get a big commodity that profitable for company, or change the using value of religion to economic value. This research is a study about audience of television advertisement with the reception approach. This research is for knowing how are the Solo Hijabers community members meaning to Zoya Hijab advertisement. This research is using a qualitative method. Data analysis that using is Reception by Stuart Hall (encoding-decoding) with using three kind of analysis, dominant hegemonic position, negotiated position, and oppositional position. The result that researcher get is just showing two types, that is hegemonic dominant and negotiation. While the opposite position not happen to Hijabers Solo Community. In this research also found interesting something, although informant nothing have an attitude, meaning, and act the same way. They are still agree of hijab Zoya distribution in the market. Even they want to buy or using that hijab. Without they realize, they agree halal value to the Zoya hijab advertisement is a form of commodification.

This study aims to describe the representation of hijrah in the Q&A program of "Hijrah Berjamaah" episode on Youtube Q&A Metro TV. The background of this study was the rise of religious phenomena, especially the phenomenon of hijrah that occured in society, where many people misused the term hijrah so that there was a shift in the meaning of hijrah itself. The Q&A Metro TV talk show program of "Hijrah Berjamaah" episode aims to straighten out the meaning of hijrah from various points of view. The researcher chose the show on the episode of Husein Ja'far Al-Hadar as the speaker because besides being a habib, he was also close to young people. This study used a qualitative descriptive method with the representation theory of Stuart Hall. This study was conducted by observing and documenting toward the reruns of the Q&A Metro TV program of "Hijrah Berjamaah" episode on Youtube Q&A Metro TV. The validity of the study data used was the source triangulation technique complemented by the interactive data analysis. The results of this study stated: first, hijrah is a journey from darkness to light or from bad to good. The substance of hijrah is the heart; second, it is not permissible to do hijrah with the aim of trading its hijrah. This is because the hijrah must be solely because of Allah and the standard of hijrah itself is moral; third, the representation of the current hijrah is spiritual hijrah, cultural hijrah, intellectual hijrah, and social hijrah.
