Abstract

The Java War had its unique influence on the development of pesantren. Prince Diponegoro plays the struggle against the invaders with some of his soldiers who come from among the pesantren. After his defeat in the Java War of 1825-1830, many Diponegoro warriors spread to teach religion. This research will discuss the sustainability of the struggle of Diponegoro warriors in pesantren and the Islamic treasures of the Java War, such as strengthening pesantren traditions and the existence of tarekat syattariyah (syattariyah order). This research is classified as historical research through Kuntowijoyo's historical research methods: topic selection, heuristics, verification, interpretation, and historiography. This research yielded several conclusions, namely: First, after its defeat in the Java war, the struggle of Diponegoro warriors with a cleric-santri background continued through the establishment of pesantren with a change in strategy more to intellectual strengthening. Second, intellectual traditions during the Java War, one of which was through the study of yellow books typical of pesantren with fiqh and Sufi patterns such as Fatḥ al-Qarîb and Tuḥfah al-Mursalah ila Rûḥ al-Nabiy. Third, the existence of the tarekat syattariyah that had an anti-colonial character at that time was quite popular in Java, made the order followed by prince Diponegoro and some of his soldiers. Fourth, when compared to the Padri War, the typology of da'wah struggle developed by Diponegoro warriors is more moderately patterned identically to Walisongo's accommodating character.

In the Prophet's time, there was still a practice of adultery narrated in the hadith that a woman complained to the Prophet that she committed adultery and wanted to be punished. The practice of sexual exploitation also occurs during the working period of Islamic Mataram through the King's concubine, who religiously must not exceed the four legal wives. Likewise, in the Dutch and Japanese, there was also prostitution. Several factors cause women to get caught up in the world of prostitution that is the most powerful there are economic factors. In normative boxing, all scholars or ulama agree that the practice of adultery through anything including localization or illegal prostitution, but in the view of the social jurisprudent, KH Sahal Mahfudz argues that localization can be a way out by eliminating it gradually and minimizing the greater negative impact.

Abstract

The hegemony of the Islamic boarding school (pesantren) has been related to the power of a Kiai. Nowadays, it has been changed by gender equality between Nyai and Kiai in Islamic boarding schools. A Kiai or Nyai can play a role inside or outside of the Islamic boarding school (pesantren). The role of the Kiai as a teacher, caretaker, and owner of the Islamic boarding school (pesantren) is quite dominant. In fact, it is found that a Nyai can also play a role in the development of education, economy, and relations in Islamic boarding schools (pesantren). This study applied a qualitative method with a phenomenological-constructionist approach. Data Collection Techniques were conducted by observation, interview, and documentation. The research results explained that the roles equality of Kiai and Nyai are obtained through a process of adaptation and the existence of space allowing the division of tasks between Kiai and Nyai as the efforts in developing Islamic boarding schools (pesantren).

Abstract

Abstract

This study describes the changing function of two Islamic presses, namely Medan Moeslimin and Islam Bergerak, in Surakarta, Central Java, Indonesia, in the transition of the 19th and 20th centuries. By historical methods through newspaper archival sources, the study produced conclusions; first, these two media were initially used as a means to “defend Islam” from some articles in the media that blasphemed Islam and, at the same time, straightened it out. In addition, the two Islamic media became an alternative source of Islamic scholarship, especially among reformist-modernist Muslims. Second, the two media were loaded with ideological interests. In their development, they had shifted their orientation from “defenders of Islam” to defenders of the spirit of nationality and universal humanity. Third, the change in orientation was inseparable from the critical role of Hadji Mohammad Misbach (1876-1926), the owner and manager of the two media, who experienced an ideological shift from orthodox Muslim towards socialist and nationalist one at once.
