Abstract

Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) remains a global health problem, particularly among pregnant women due to the risk of mother-to-child transmission. Rapid HIV testing is widely used for early detection in primary healthcare settings. Different blood specimens such as serum and whole blood can be utilized; however, their effectiveness requires evaluation. Objective to determine the effectiveness of serum and whole blood specimens in rapid HIV testing among pregnant women at Batang Beruh Health Center. Methods: This study employed a cross-sectional analytical design involving 20 pregnant women undergoing rapid HIV testing. Examination was performed using serum and whole blood specimens. Data were analyzed using Chi-square test with a significance level of 0.05. Results: Sixteen respondents (80%) showed good examination results consisting of 8 non-reactive serum results and 8 non-reactive whole blood results. Four respondents (20%) were categorized as poor results with reactive findings in both specimen types. Chi-square analysis showed p=0.02 (<0.05), indicating significant effectiveness of serum and whole blood usage. Serum and whole blood specimens are effective for rapid HIV testing among pregnant women.

Abstract

A health laboratory is a healthcare facility that conducts examinations, analyses, and tests on human biological samples or non-biological materials to help identify diseases, determine the causes of health disorders, assess the health conditions of individuals or communities, and detect factors that can affect health status. Screening for sexually transmitted infections is a health check carried out to detect the presence of sexually transmitted infections in someone, even before symptoms appear, so that treatment can be done earlier to prevent complications and further transmission. For pregnant women, screening for sexually transmitted infections plays an important role in maintaining the health of both mother and baby and supporting efforts to reduce maternal and infant morbidity and mortality. The goal of this community service is to understand the relationship of health laboratory management in supporting sexual transmitted disease screening programs at pregnant women at Aek Natolu Health Center. The community service activity was carried out using a participatory approach based on health checks and education. Education was provided on the importance of laboratory tests during pregnancy, the prevention of sexually transmitted infections, and the importance of compliance with routine antenatal check-ups. This activity involved 25 participants, consisting of all pregnant women at Aek Natolu Health Center. The results of the examination showed that out of 25 respondents, 23 respondents (92%) did not have sexually transmitted infections, while 2 respondents (8%) had sexually transmitted infections. The results of this activity show that health laboratory management plays an important role in supporting early detection of sexually transmitted infections in pregnant women, which can serve as a basis for providing education, follow-up, and preventive efforts to improve the quality of maternal and child health services

Abstract

The quality of blood samples dictates the validity of clinical laboratory testing. Lipemic serum conditions frequently cause analytical issues due to high lipid particles that interfere with photometer readings in chemistry analyzers. This community service (PkM) program, formatted as a workshop, was implemented to broaden the knowledge and technical proficiency of laboratory personnel. The event involved 30 students from the Medical Laboratory Technology program as participants. The implementation included interactive lectures, visual demonstrations, in-depth discussions on clinical chemistry principles, and hands-on sample management practices in the laboratory. Educational and training materials were specifically designed to ensure that participants could effectively resolve lipid interference and understand the function of alpha-cyclodextrin as a safe clearing agent that does not alter analyte concentrations. The results demonstrated tangible progress among participants in detecting analytical interference caused by lipemia, evidenced by a 33.5-point average increase in cognitive knowledge scores and a 95.0% participant satisfaction rate. Participants are now capable of executing correct pre-analytical steps using alpha-cyclodextrin and obtaining more accurate urea and creatinine measurements. This program underlines the importance of integrating technical problem-solving into human resource competency enhancement activities in the laboratory. Improving participants' understanding of managing problematic specimens contributes directly to enhancing the quality of clinical chemistry examination results and supports the creation of professional, precise, and reliable healthcare services for the community..
