Abstract

ANALYSIS OF 10 ELEMENTS AND TRAVEL MAP OF THE CHARACTERS IN THE FILM "LION". The film "Lion" is a drama film that tells about the struggle of a child from India who faces the phenomenon of transference, a phenomenon marked by past memories that appear and burden someone. Saroo's character is the main character in the story. Each character can be described with 10 elements through the life of the characters in a story. Characters also experience journeys that can be illustrated through 12 character journey maps. This study aims to explain the 10 elements and 12 stages of the character journey map in the “Lion” movie. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method by collecting sources and accurately analyzing the material for the "Lion" film. The theory used is the 10 elements theory of character proposed by Orson Scott Card and the 12 character journey theory by Christopher Vogler. Based on the research that has been done, it is concluded that each character has an element that can be seen from the character's actions throughout the story. Characters also go on journeys that can be elaborated through the 12 stages of the character journey map. Along the way, the characters also learn from every problem they face. The journey that the character faces will bring the character back to the original world by bringing the values that the character learns along the way.

Abstract

Film “Yuni” (2021) merupakan film yang menceritakan tentang kisah seorang gadis remaja yang memiliki mimpi untuk melanjutkan pendidikannya ke bangku perkuliahan. Film “Yuni” (2021) membahas tentang stereotype pernikahan remaja pada perempuan. Karakter Yuni dalam film “Yuni” (2021) memiliki latar belakang dan 3 dimensional karakter yang mengalami perubahan. Sedangkan tema film “Yuni” (2021) membicarakan tentang kebebasan wanita dalam berbicara. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui perubahan sifat karakter utama yang didasarkan pada penjabaran adegan, struktur 3 babak dan sequence dalam film “Yuni” (2021). Metode yang digunakan adalah metode kualitatif deskriptif dengan menggunakan berbagai teori sebagai bahan analisis secara akurat. Teori yang digunakan adalah teori struktur 3 babak yang dikemukakan oleh Syd Field. Sedangkan penjabaran teori pendekatan sequence didasarkan pada teori yang dijelaskan oleh Salman Aristo. Selanjutnya, penjabaran adegan dikaitkan dengan teori yang dijelaskan oleh Robert Mckee. Penjelasan perubahan karakter didasarkan dengan teori yang dikemukakan oleh Robert Mckee dan David Trottier. Berdasarkan penelitian yang telah dilakukan, disimpulkan bahwa Yuni mengalami perubahan sifat, yaitu dari seorang remaja yang memiliki ketakutan dalam mengambil keputusan, menjadi karakter yang berani membela mimpinya sebagai wanita yang memiliki kebebasan.

Abstract

Cinematography is about combining and capturing images to form a series of images that tell a story. In practice, cinematography has several compositions, such as the rule of thirds, visual composition, and camera angles. "Melawan Restu" is a music video that applies visual composition to highlight the theme of romance. Unlike other music videos, many visual compositions emphasize the meaning of each song’s lyrics. This study aims to show the visual composition that builds dramatization of the song lyrics in the music video "Melawan Restu". The method used is qualitative by using a purposive sampling technique. This study uses Gustavo Mercado's theory which discusses visual composition in cinematography. The results of this study indicate that visual composition not only provides aesthetics but also the meaning of each shot so that it can be understood by the audience. In the music video for "Melawan Restu", there is an application of the visual composition showing serenity which connotes the lyrics of the song. While several other visual compositions show sadness, powerless, and turmoil in the bad situations experienced by the female characters in the story.

Abstract

Film “JUMANJI: Welcome To The Jungle” merupakan film yang menceritakan tentang sekelompok anak muda yang terperangkap dalam sebuah permainan yang bernama Jumanji. Dalam film tersebut, terdapat peran pada setiap karakter yang mendukung cerita. Selain itu, terdapat perubahan sifat karakter utama dan pembantu yang dapat dilihat dari awal hingga akhir gim. Penelitian ini dilakukan dengan tujuan untuk mengetahui perubahan sifat karakter utama dan pendukung dari awal hingga akhir cerita. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif deskriptif, dengan menggunakan teori struktur 3 babak yang dikemukakan oleh Syd Field, teori peran karakter oleh Christopher Vogler. Dari hasil analisis yang telah dilakukan, disimpulkan bahwa terdapat perubahan pada karakter utama dan pendukung yang dapat dilihat pada tahap Set-Up, Confrontation dan Resolution. Perubahan tersebut merepresentasikan pesan utama dari film itu sendiri, yaitu untuk membantu sesama manusia, berani, terbuka dan tidak egois dalam menghadapi setiap tantangan.

Abstract

Photojournalism can depict events that hold meaning. In Indonesia, the inception of photojournalism was led by Alex Mendur and Frans Mendur. Alex and Frans Mendur were photojournalists who captured images of events during the periods of independence, the New Order era, and the Reform era. Besides documenting these events, they also photographed the atmosphere and ordinary people after the independence period. This research aims to understand the role of composition in the photographic works of Alex and Frans Mendur and the extent to which composition was applied. To prove and understand this, the research is necessary. The theory used in this study is the photography composition theory proposed by Budhi Santoso. The research method employed is qualitative descriptive, utilizing the theories of Budhi Santoso and Paul Hill as analytical tools. Based on the analysis conducted, it is concluded that the photographic works of Alex and Frans Mendur employ various compositions. These compositions are used to guide the viewer's focus on specific parts of the image. Furthermore, these compositions highlight subjects such as heroic figures and landscapes, creating an impact within the images. This research is expected to serve as a reference in the field of basic journalistic photography, emphasizing the importance of applying visual composition in capturing a narrative moment, making it easier for the audience to understand and interpret the visual message being conveyed, a practice that dates back to the period of Indonesian Independence.

Abstract

"Yuni" is a film that tells about a teenage girl who has big goal to continue her education to the university level. Yuni faces various inner problems that arise from herself and her environment related to myths and engagement. The film "Yuni" underwent a change in character traits which can be seen in the 5-act story structure. The purpose of this research is to find out the changes in the characters based on the 5-act story structure proposed by John Yorke. The research method used is a qualitative descriptive method using various theories and references to analyze changes in the character of the main character based on the five-act story structure. The theory used is the three-dimensional character theory proposed by Lajos Egri and the 5-act story structure theory proposed by John Yorke. From the research that has been done Yuni's character has changed in character in the form of a three-dimensional character that can be seen from the beginning and the end. The change in character can be completed with five rounds which include exposition, complication, climax, fall and disaster in the story in the film "Yuni". This concludes theme of the film “Yuni”, namely a woman who chooses freedom to achieve her dreams and fights against the myths of marriage in her environment.

Abstract

Motion graphics have functions that allow messages to be delivered efficiently and attractively to the audience. "Clash of Champions" is an educational game show that applies motion graphics throughout the video so that the message can be delivered well. This study was conducted to discuss the application of the function of motion graphics in supporting message delivery in "Clash of Champions". The method used is qualitative with a purposive sampling approach. The theory used is the motion graphic theory proposed by Austin Shaw. From the research that has been done, it is concluded that there are motion graphics in the form of infographics, kinetic typography, and characters. Infographics describe the profiles of participants, situations, games, and results throughout the video. Kinetic typography gives a "technological" feel to the text display. Character-based motion graphics are used to show the figure of the tutor who delivers important information at the event. Thus, the application of motion graphics in "Clash of Champions" can provide information efficiently so that the videos displayed are informative, persuasive, and inspiring for the audience.

Abstract

Film “Prey” merupakan film bergenre aksi, thriller dan sci-fi yang menceritakan tentang kedatangan Predator di dunia Comache 300 pada masanya. Dengan adanya Predator yang mengancam salah satu suku yang ada di bumi, Naru, seorang wanita yang terampil berjuang untuk melindungi sukunya. Film “Prey” memiliki banyak adegan – adegan yang menunjukkan aksi. Adegan tersebut dapat dipahami penonton melalui action cut, atau potongan gambar yang berkesinambungan. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menjabarkan action cut dalam membangun dramatisasi pada beberapa adegan menonjol dalam film “Prey”. Teori yang digunakan yaitu teori action cut dari Blain Brown dan struktur 3 babak oleh Syd Field. Dari penelitian yang dilakukan, dapat disimpulkan bahwa action cut menunjukkan fungsi setiap babak cerita. Action cut 1 – 5 menunjukkan kehidupan dan kemampuan karakter utama, Naru. Sedangkan action cut 6 – 20 menunjukkan usaha karakter utama dalam melawan musuh utamanya, yaitu Predator dan orang jahat. Action cut 21 – 23 menunjukkan pertarungan dan kemenangan karakter utama dalam menghadapi Predator. Setiap potongan yang berkesinambungan tersebut menunjukkan aksi – aksi yang mendramatisir pada setiap adegan. Dengan adanya potongan – potongan yang berkesinambungan, penonton dapat memahami pesan dari setiap adegan.

Abstract

Visual composition is one of cinematography elements that functions as an impression through an image. "Birds of A Feather" is a music video that has the application of visual composition in building the impression of abnormality in all its scenes, thus helping to convey the message of the song. This study focuses on the discussion of the application of visual composition in building the impression of abnormality in the scenes in the music video "Birds of A Feather". This study uses a qualitative method with a purposive sampling approach. The theory used is cinematographic composition theory proposed by Gustavo Mercado, namely the rule of thirds with narrow looking room and visual imbalance. It is concluded that there is an application of visual composition in the form of the rule of thirds with narrow looking room and visual imbalance that dominates the frame, thus showing the impression of abnormality in the scene. The impression of abnormality is shown in the incident when Billie sings with a smile and calmness in the midst of an unfavorable situation. Billie is attracted by the force that makes her fall and be pushed.
