Abstract

Early reading skills are basic skills that are important for early childhood as a foundation for language development and readiness to enter the next level of education. However, the reality is that there are still many children aged 4-5 years who have difficulty recognizing letters, distinguishing letter shapes, and stringing letters into simple syllables and words. This research aims to improve the initial reading ability of children aged 4–5 years through the use of letter puzzle media. The research method used is Classroom Action Research (PTK) with the Kemmis and McTaggart models which are carried out in two cycles. The subjects of the study were 10 children of group A at PAUD (SPS) Miftahusshibyan Sukahaji. Data collection techniques include observation, interviews, and documentation. The results of the study show that the use of letter puzzle media can improve children's initial reading skills, both in recognizing letters, distinguishing letters, reading syllables, and reading simple words. Thus, the letter puzzle media is effectively used to improve early reading skills in early childhood. This is evidenced by the data obtained during the pre-action, the percentage reaches %, then increases by % in cycle I to % and increases again by % in cycle II to %. This data shows that puzzle media can improve initial reading ability.

Abstract

Problem: Despite growing research on educational administrative service quality, there is limited study examining the leadership strategies of heads of administration (kepala tata usaha) in state Islamic secondary schools (Madrasah Aliyah Negeri) in the context of digital transformation in Indonesia. Purpose: This study aims to analyze the strategies employed by the head of administration at MAN 2 Karawang in improving educational administrative service satisfaction, through the lens of SERVQUAL dimensions. Method: A descriptive qualitative approach was used, involving seven purposively selected informants: the school principal, head of administration, one administrative staff, two teachers, and two students. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, observation, and documentation, then analyzed using the Miles and Huberman interactive model (data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing/verification), with triangulation for validity. Results: Four interlocking strategies were identified: (1) enforcing work discipline tied to staff competency mapping; (2) strengthening interpersonal communication and team coordination; (3) integrating digital administrative technology into service workflows; and (4) implementing structured weekly supervision and evaluation cycles. These strategies produced measurable improvements in service responsiveness, reliability, and user satisfaction as perceived by students and teachers. Contribution: This study offers an integrated strategy model for madrasah administrative leadership in the digital era, contributing novel theoretical and practical insights to Islamic educational management literature beyond previously reported isolated findings.

Abstract

Gross motor competence in early childhood supports participation in active play and provides a foundation for later movement, health, and learning experiences. This study examined whether graded-zone throwing-and-catching ball play could improve gross motor performance among children aged 5–6 years in an Islamic early childhood education setting in Karawang, Indonesia. A collaborative classroom action research design was implemented with 13 children (7 girls and 6 boys) through a pre-action assessment and two iterative cycles. Cycle I comprised six meetings, whereas Cycle II comprised four meetings refined on the basis of classroom reflection. The intervention progressed from an easy zone, emphasizing short-distance throws, slow catches, stable posture, and direct modelling, to a challenge zone involving greater distance, faster responses, movement, targets, and simple obstacle courses. Gross motor performance was observed across body coordination, strength, balance, and agility using a four-level developmental rubric. Sixteen retained instrument items demonstrated a Cronbach’s alpha of 0.857. The class mean increased from 40.27% at pre-action to 50.96% in Cycle I and 77.94% in Cycle II, exceeding the predetermined 75% classroom success criterion. Final domain means were 80.41% for coordination, 76.44% for strength, 76.08% for balance, and 78.85% for agility. Qualitative observations also indicated more stable posture, faster responses, improved movement sequencing, and greater confidence during ball tasks. The findings suggest that progressively structured, low-cost throwing-and-catching play is a promising classroom strategy for gross motor development, while the single-class action-research design limits causal and population-level inference.

Abstract

Discipline in early childhood is reflected in children’s emerging ability to follow routines, comply with agreed rules, complete activities, and use socially appropriate behavior in daily learning. This study examined the use of serial storybooks to improve discipline among children aged 5–6 years at PAUD Nusa Indah V. The study employed collaborative classroom action research based on the Kemmis–McTaggart cycle of planning, action, observation, and reflection. Fourteen children in Kindergarten B (10 boys and 4 girls) participated. The intervention was implemented in two cycles, with four meetings in each cycle. The storybook series addressed three recurring domains of classroom discipline: time discipline, learning/activity discipline, and etiquette/routine discipline. Data were collected through structured observation, documentation, and field notes and analyzed using descriptive quantitative comparisons and qualitative reflection across cycles. The mean discipline achievement was 40.10% at pre-action, increased to 52.30% in Cycle I, and reached 77.02% in Cycle II. Thus, the increase was 12.20 percentage points from pre-action to Cycle I and 24.72 percentage points from Cycle I to Cycle II, for an overall gain of 36.92 percentage points. Qualitative observations indicated improved punctuality, rule-following, task completion, classroom routines, and polite behavior, accompanied by greater attention and engagement during storytelling. The findings suggest that serial storybooks can function as a developmentally appropriate, low-cost medium for repeatedly modeling expected behavior and supporting classroom habituation. Because the study involved one small class without a comparison group, the findings should be interpreted as evidence of classroom improvement rather than population-level causal effects.
