Abstract

Mastering English skill for students at a vocational institution of higher education is a mounting problem as the students are expected to develop practical English skills in specific disciplinary knowledge and internalize the attitudes and professional values. Implementation of project-based learning (PBL) in teaching speaking particularly the presentation skill can be seen as an alternative to cover both areas as it encourages students to develop higher critical thinking, enhances deep learning and motivates students to be independent learners with exceptional self-management. This article presents the results of the study on the impact of project-based learning on students’ speaking achievement particularly their presentation skills and students’ perceptions on the PBL stages. Participants were 19 fourth-semester students enrolled in a three-year undergraduate program in Electrical Engineering. The goal of this project was to drive students’ engagement in speaking activities and put students in the language-specific setting in which language was naturally used based on the project characteristics. This research employed mixed methods in which the quantitative data, i.e., pre-test and post-test were analyzed using SPSS statistic 21. The finding showed that the correlation coefficient (r) was 0,575. Based on the interpretation scale of correlation coefficient by Guilford (1965), the range of the correlation coefficients is between the range of 0,401-0,700 which means that the correlation is quite strong. Based on the result of analysis using SPSS statistics 21 with 95% level of confidence, it was revealed that -tcount < -ttable (-6.269 < -2,10092) and the significance value (pvalue) of 2-tailed was less than 0,05 (0,000 < 0,05). It can be concluded that H1 was accepted and H0 was rejected signifying that there was a significant effect of PBL implementation in improving students’ speaking achievement. In addition, this study also analyzed qualitative data collected from google form and focus group discussion to gain students’ perception towards the implementation of PBL using infographic. The results of online questionnaire revealed that students experienced deep and autonomous learning through the stages conducted in the project. They gained better understanding on grammar and vocabulary during peer review and showed positive attitude in designing infographics as they could revise the structure of their presentation while designing the infographics’ wireframes. Consequently, learning speaking through project-based learning using infographic helped to enhance students’ engagement to series of works within the projects and foster their collaborative and communicative skills while working together in groups. The results showed a significant effect of PBL on students’ presentation skills and improve soft skills compatible to workplace requirements. Considering the positive result of this study, PBL is recommended to be applied in teaching speaking for students in higher vocational education as it gives beneficial impact on students’ content learning and soft skills.DOI: doi.org/10.24071/ijiet.2019.030210

Abstract

This study aims to investigate and develop a mobile tax accounting dictionary that functions as a self-learning tool for improving speaking competence through project-based learning. The dictionary was created based on the ADDIE Model (analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation). The application was developed utilizing the Waterfall approach, PHP programming language, and the SLIM framework. The application covered a wide range of tax accounting terms with bilingual sample sentences, learning materials focusing on grammatical constructions utilized in business meeting presentations, an evaluation section featuring vocabulary placement tests, and exercises at varying difficulty levels. During the implementation phase, a quasi-experimental approach was employed using a pretest-posttest control group design with 52 participants from the Accounting Taxation Study Program. To evaluate the impact of the dictionary application on student learning achievement, the speaking scores of the students were analyzed using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test and the SPSS Statistics 25 program. The data analysis, specifically the independent Samples Test output table, revealed a significant difference (Sig value 0.05) between the results of the control and treatment classes. Consequently, the self-learning Taxation Accounting Dictionary application produced in this study was an excellent aid for boosting students’ speaking skills, as evidenced by improved performance after using the application.

Abstract

The research aims to analyze and develop a mobile-based grammar learning application and the perceptions of computer vocational high school students regarding the use of the application in the learning process. The main focus of this research is developing a mobile-based grammar application for computer users, which enhances students' independence in the grammar teaching process, along with examining how the application was put into practice. This learning media was created using the ADDIE Model, which includes analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. The waterfall method, dart programming language, and Flutter framework are used to create the application. After the implementation stage, this research used a mixed methods approach, combining quantitative and qualitative survey data collected through Google Forms with Likert Scale and paragraph question types. The findings from this study shed light on the needs, attitudes, preferences, and feedback from students for improvement regarding the utilization of mobile grammar apps for language learning. The analysis shows that students have a positive experience when learning grammar using this app, as it allows them to extend their learning beyond the classroom without time and place restrictions. The data analysis provides valuable insights into the effectiveness and potential drawbacks of integrating such apps into the curriculum. These insights contribute to the ongoing discourse on technology integration in education and offer practical implications for educators, curriculum designers, and educational policymakers who want to improve language teaching through digital devices in vocational high schools.
