Abstract

The journal article titled "Exploring Contemporary Theodicies: Fresh Insights on the Problem of Evil in an Unjust World" investigates the problem of evil and injustice from a multidisciplinary perspective. The study reviews classical theodicies like the Augustinian, Irenaean, and Leibnizian approaches, which attempt to reconcile the existence of evil with an all-powerful, benevolent God. It also explores modern theodicies, including process theology, the free will defense, soul-making theodicy, and open theism, offering alternative explanations for the problem of evil. Additionally, the article incorporates psychological, sociological, and ethical perspectives to address the social and individual dimensions of evil and injustice. The findings emphasize the importance of deeper theological reflection, the inclusion of interdisciplinary insights, and the promotion of social justice. They also stress the cultivation of compassion, empathy, and the nurturing of faith and hope. The study calls for further research on topics such as comparative theodicies, the lived experience of evil, intersectionality, and theological perspectives on structural injustice. Ultimately, this research provides fresh insights into the problem of evil, fostering ongoing dialogue in theology, philosophy, and interdisciplinary studies, with an emphasis on justice, love, and mercy.

Abstract

This research examines the concept of timelessness and its significant implications for religious beliefs, focusing on theological, ethical, and spiritual dimensions. Employing a qualitative methodology, the study analyzes theological texts, ethical frameworks, and spiritual practices across various religious traditions to explore how the attribute of timelessness shapes believers' understanding of the divine. Timelessness, as an attribute of God, emphasizes His eternal and unchanging qualities, influencing believers’ perceptions of their relationship with the divine and fostering a sense of intimacy and transcendence. Ethically, the belief in a timeless God provides a framework for moral decision-making, reinforcing the idea of absolute truths rooted in divine will. This perspective cultivates a sense of responsibility and accountability among believers, shaping their concepts of justice and mercy. Spiritually, the concept of timelessness impacts practices such as prayer, worship, and meditation, encouraging individuals to seek experiences of transcendence and connection with the eternal. Mindfulness and contemplative practices allow believers to cultivate a sense of presence that enriches their spiritual lives. The implications of timelessness on religious beliefs are profound, influencing theological understandings, ethical frameworks, and spiritual practices. Engaging with the concept of timelessness invites believers to explore the depths of their faith and spirituality, recognizing the connection between the eternal and the temporal. This research highlights the importance of timelessness in fostering a deeper sense of connection, purpose, and meaning in the lives of believers, encouraging a holistic approach to faith that transcends the confines of time.

Abstract

This research examines the practice of necromancy among the Toba Batak from a theological perspective, specifically based on 1 Samuel 28:7. This practice, although it has long been an integral part of Batak culture, poses serious challenges when confronted with the teachings of the Christian faith. In the present context, there are still Batak Christian communities who practice this ritual as a form of respect for ancestors, even though the Bible explicitly opposes it. This research uses a qualitative method with a literature study approach to trace the roots of this belief, exegetical analysis of 1 Samuel 28:7, and the church's response to this phenomenon. The results show that there is syncretism between Christian teachings and local culture that causes theological confusion among the congregation. This finding indicates the need for a contextualized and educative pastoral approach by the church in guiding people to uphold the Christian faith without completely abandoning their cultural identity. This research emphasizes the importance of churches understanding the local cultural context in conveying doctrine and developing relevant and transformative mission strategies.

Abstract

Contextual learning in science education deeply engages students by connecting scientific concepts to real-life experiences, enhancing motivation, meaningful understanding, retention, and problem-solving skills. Kyza & Georgiou's meta-analysis and the findings of Bennett et al. demonstrate its effectiveness. However, the ontological and epistemological meanings of scientific literacy, which are intended to be developed through this approach, remain underexplored. This study aims to investigate the meaning of literacy, science, and truth in the context of science education through a historical-grammatical hermeneutic approach. This study uses a qualitative hermeneutic method that integrates a historical analysis of the development of scientific literacy from positivism to constructivism and humanism and a grammatical study of key terms such as literacy, science, context, and learning in educational policies and curriculum frameworks. The interpretation process is carried out circularly to understand the meaning within the social and pedagogical context. The results show that scientific literacy extends beyond understanding scientific texts to encompass the ability to connect scientific knowledge with human responsibility, socio-scientific issues, and ecological awareness. Contextual learning is an effective pedagogical bridge for fostering meaningful scientific literacy by connecting scientific concepts with real-life experiences and student reflection.
