Abstract

Abstract

Oxidative stress caused by excess production of free radicals in the body can cause degenerative diseases such as hypertension, cardiovascular disease, stroke, diabetes mellitus, cancer and signs of aging. This degenerative disease is caused because the antioxidants in the body are unable to neutralize the increased concentration of free radicals. Utilization of natural ingredients as antioxidants is needed, this is because the use of traditional medicine is considered to have relatively smaller side effects compared to drugs derived from chemicals. Antioxidant testing was carried out using the DPPH method on samples in the form of ethanol extract of the seeds of the salak nglumut cultivar and against ascorbic acid as a comparison. The results showed that the ethanol extract of the seeds of the nglumut cultivars of salak seeds contained secondary metabolites such as alkaloids, polyphenols, tannins, flavonoids and steroids. The ethanol extract of the nglumut cultivars of salak seeds has antioxidant activity in the moderate category with an IC50 value of 115,19 ppm.

Abstract

One of the beneficial parts in salak pondoh is the seeds. Salak pondoh seeds have antioxidant activity that can counteract free radicals. This potential can be utilized in the formulation of facial cleansing cosmetics. The purpose of this study was to formulate the ethanolic extract of salak pondoh seeds into a facial soap, then tested the physical properties and tested for acute irritation. The ethanol extract of salak pondoh seeds was formulated in several concentrations, namely 1%, 3% and 5%. Evaluation of the physical properties includes organoleptic tests, pH tests, foaming tests, viscosity tests and spreadability tests. The acute dermal irritation test used a rabbit. The data obtained were statistically tested using the one-way ANOVA method to determine the difference between each formula. The results is a brown liquid facial soap (with extract) and white (without extract). Evaluation of the physical properties resulted pH and foaming tests according to standards but viscosity and spreadability did not match. The non-fulfillment of the viscosity standards and the spreadability caused by the Viscosity Modifier (NaCl) in the formula needs to be adjusted further. This facial soap is moderately irritant to animal skin. The irritation is thought to occur because Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) in the formula can affect erythema and edema in the test animals. Keywords: salak pondoh seeds, facial soap, physical properties, irritation test

Abstract

Starch is one of the commonly used excipients in tablet preparations. Natural starch has limitations in the form of poor flow rate and compressibility, so it is not suitable for use in the manufacture of tablets by direct compression. One source of plants that produce starch and has not been widely developed is (Colocasia esculenta (L). Schott var. Pratama). The purpose of this study was to modify (Colocasia esculenta (L). Schott var. Pratama) starch by gelatinization used in diclofenac potassium slow-release tablets. This research is a type of laboratory experimental research that begins with the isolation of starch from taro tubers, modification of starch by pregelatinization, manufacture of diclofenac potassium slow release tablet press mass, evaluation of physical properties and finished tablet dissolution tests. The results of the printing mass test showed that the use of (Colocasia esculenta (L). Schott var. Pratama) pregelatinated starch matrix had good flowability. The results of the tablet test showed that the average tablet weight was 209 ± 3.40 mg, the diameter and thickness were 7.69 ± 0.02 and 2.82 ± 0.01 mm respectively, the hardness was 7.00 ± 0.35 kg, the friability was 0. 73 ± 0.27 % and disintegration time 65.33 ± 2.52 minutes and the dissolution results showed that within 8 hours the potassium diclofenac sustained release tablet dissolved 60.20%. Based on the physical properties and dissolution tests performed, it can be concluded that the use of pregelatinated modified starch as a matrix in diclofenac potassium slow-release tablets fulfills the specified test parameters.

Abstract

Tablets are pharmaceutical preparations consisting of active ingredients and excipients. One of the commonly used excipients is starch. (Colocasia esculenta (L). Schott var, Pratama) is a plant that contains a high source of starch. The use of natural starch in tablets has limitations in the form of less fast flow and poor compressibility. The purpose of this study was to modify natural starch by pregelatinization, pentanol and acetylation. This research was conducted using laboratory experimental methods, starting with sorting the starch tubers of (Colocasia esculenta (L). Schott var, Pratama), starch isolation, modification and characterization of the resulting starch. The characterization results showed that the flow rate of natural starch, pregelatinized, pentanol and acetylated sequentially was 1.9 ± 0.19; 2.15 ± 0.37; 1.35 ± 0.15; and 1.95 ± 0.14 g/s with an angle of repose of 20.49 ± 1.99; 17.12 ± 1.99; 22.92 ± 1.18 and 20.06 ± 1.97°, while the compressibility value is 20.23 ± 5.31; 15.47 ± 3.03; 21, 09 ± 2.8 and 19.09 ± 2.05%.
