Abstract

This paper presents results of saturated and unsaturated stability analysis of slope failures along jalan Simpang Sugih Waras – Batas Kota Baturaja. Most slopes failures occurred after a heavy rainfall; thus, rainfall infiltration is identified as the cause of the failures. Four locations were selected for this study. Soil samples were collected and tested in laboratory. The results indicate that the slope was made of clay with low plasticity. In the absence of the exact time of failure, IDF curve was used to identify the critical rainfall. In this case 19mm/hr rainfall for 6 hr was selected from 10-year-return-period IDF curve developed based on 20 year of rainfall data from nearby rainfall station. Seep analyses were carried out on the four slopes to obtain the seepage induced by rainfall infiltration and change of pore water pressure. Slope stability analyses were performed at selected times during and after rainfall application. The results of slope stability analysis show that the critical condition for slope was at the end of rainfall. Among the four slopes analyzed in his study, slope height has the most influence on the slope stability.

Abstract

South Sumatra Province is situated in the southern part of Sumatra Island. The western part of this province rests on the Bukit Barisan Mountains. National roads in this area pass through steep slopes and valleys, making them prone to landslides. This study aims to evaluate the slope risk on twelve (12) national road segments crossing the Bukit Barisan area. The study was conducted based on data collected by the South Sumatra Province National Road Implementation Center (BBPJNSS) in 2018 - 2022. The risk level is calculated and classified based on the Road Slope Risk Assessment Guidelines provided by the Ministry of PUPR in 2017. The evaluation results showed that the most vulnerable road segments to landslides are Road segments 15-036, 15-37, and 15-38, connecting Lahat, Pagar Alam, Tanjung Sakti, and the border of Bengkulu Province. Meanwhile, the most prominent types of landslides are soil and rock collapse. The highest number of slopes with high and very high risks occurred in 2020; thereafter, the number declined in 2021 and 2022, as the Ministry of Public Works initiated mitigation projects in the area. The landslide risk map created in this study shows that in 2022, areas with a high risk of landslide have been reduced by the systematic mitigation program implemented by PUPR based on the slope inventory carried out since 2018.

Abstract

The western part of South Sumatra Province is situated near Bukit Barisan. Therefore, the topography is characterized by hills and mountains. This condition makes the area vulnerable to ground movement. Information on the risk level and type of ground movement is very important for the region's development. This paper presents the mapping of risk level and type of ground movement along the national road system in South Sumatra Province. The map was developed based on slope condition data collected and tabulated in the Slope Management System developed by the Ministry of Public Works based on several parameters. These parameters were processed and analyzed using ArcGIS software. The risk level is classified as low, medium, high, and very high. The type of ground movement is categorized as debris flow, rock fall, slope failure, rock mass failure, embankment failure, rotation failure, and translation failure. The study uses data from 2018 and 2021. Results show that most ground movement on road segments 36, 37, 38, 18, 19, and 21 is slope failure. The map suggests an increase in the number and level of risk of slope failures from 28 in 2018 to 45 in 2021. The map could be used as preliminary information but not as a replacement for slope surveys and investigations.
