Abstract

Ancient architecture has a significant role in representing the values, beliefs and identity of society in the past. By delving deeper into the structure, form and meaning of ancient architecture, this research aims to understand how this architecture became a cultural symbol that depicts aspects of people's lives in certain time periods. This research uses a qualitative approach with descriptive methods. The results of this research show that ancient architecture is not just a monumental physical structure, but is also a symbol of culture, power and identity. The technical expertise in the construction of large structures reflected the intellectual capabilities of ancient societies, while the art of carving and sculpture in ancient buildings provided a visual language that conveyed values and beliefs. Ancient buildings function as centers of social, religious, and political life, reinforcing cultural norms and maintaining societal stability. As a symbol of power, ancient architecture reflects the dominance of powerful entities and designs hierarchical order in society.

Abstract

Building design is often considered a form of art that reflects certain values, culture, or messages that the architect or builder wants to convey. The aim of this research is to explore the meaning and messages that may be contained in building design elements, such as shape, color, texture and spatial arrangement. In this research, the method used is a qualitative descriptive method. The results of this research reveal that behind building designs there are hidden messages that reflect the values, culture and ideas of the architect or designer. The building design process not only involves aesthetic and functional considerations, but also integrates philosophical or abstract messages through elements such as shape, color, and structural placement. In addition, in response to increasing concern for the environment, building design also explores sustainability aspects by considering the use of environmentally friendly materials and energy efficiency. These findings show that building design not only encapsulates architectural art and techniques, but also becomes a visual expression of the messages and values that the designers want to convey.

Abstract

Candi Bajang Ratu, a stepped gateway in Trowulan, Mojokerto, is a significant architectural relic from the Majapahit Kingdom (13th-15th centuries CE). The ambiguous gendered name “Bajang Ratu” combining “bajang” (young/small) and “ratu” (a title for women) has prompted interpretations linking the site to influential female figures such as Gayatri Rajapatni. This article aims to uncover the representation of feminine values and local wisdom in the ornamental motifs of Candi Bajang Ratu through a semiotic approach. Employing a qualitative interpretive methodology, the study applies Roland Barthes’ semiotic framework (denotation, connotation, myth) and Charles Sanders Peirce’s triadic signs (icon, index, symbol), integrated within a hermeneutic case study design. Data were collected from secondary sources, including archaeological documentation and academic literature, and analyzed thematically and contextually. The findings reveal that the temple’s ornamental elements, such as hand-like profiles resembling prayer gestures, spiritually sacred spatial symbols, makara reliefs with flowing vines, vegetal motifs, symmetrical arches, fragments of Apsara figures, and the stepped gateway structure, symbolically embody feminine principles: fertility, wisdom, protection, cosmic harmony, flexibility, and adaptability. The curved, flowing architectural forms contrast sharply with masculine aesthetics characterized by rigidity and verticality, affirming the reverence for women not merely as individuals, but as cosmological and moral forces underpinning the kingdom’s continuity. Thus, Candi Bajang Ratu functions as a symbolic monument institutionalizing the recognition of feminine values within Majapahit culture. Far more than a stone structure, it is a symbolic archive of gentle yet enduring power, encapsulating sustainable values that mirror the character of Nusantara women.

Abstract

The City of Solo (Surakarta) establishes itself as the City of Culture. The City of Solo as a City of Culture cannot be separated from the existence of the Solo Palace. The Solo Palace was built in 1755 by King Sunan Pakubuwono II with the palace area which eventually developed into the City of Solo. The Solo Palace area can be seen through the signs of the existence of the gate in several places. The gate is not only a sign of the boundaries of the palace territory, but the gate has cultural messages, behavior, strata levels and in the form of the gate itself it is loaded with messages of meaning as a communication of the king's policies with his people. This research is an interpretation research with a semiological approach using Barthes' theory. Interpretation is done by cultural contextual correlation. This semiological approach with contextual correlation of community culture is termed by the author as an ethnosemiological study. The results of the interpretation of the forms at the gate of the Solo Palace show that these forms contain very wise meanings and messages and are teachings of virtue, messages of governance and leadership of power. Messages through the symbols of shapes at the gates of the Solo Palace have existed since the mid-17th century, while the development of semiology theory only occurred in the 19th century. This proves that the Solo Palace Founders had implemented semiology theory before the theory was born.
