Abstract

In today’s world where technology is inevitable, teachers are expected to adapt to dynamic changes, which requires the integration of technology into classroom activities. However, COVID-19 outbreaks, which forced a sudden shift in the educational system from offline to online learning, pose challenges for teachers. In this study, we examine the performance of vocational English teachers in the Ogan Ilir district, South Sumatera from the perspective of the teachers' self-assessments using qualitative descriptive analysis. Three English teachers from three vocational schools took a teachers' self-assessment questionnaire consisting of forty performance indicators categorized into six performance standards: learning preparation, learning activities, learning evaluation, interpersonal relationships, professional development, and school development. The results revealed that out of four levels, the performance level of the teachers was at level two for the five last standards and level three for the first standard. To better understand their performance, a semi-structured in-depth interview was conducted.

Abstract

Idiomatic expressions are an essential component of language, often used in literature and music to convey complex emotions and abstract ideas. In the realm of contemporary music, particularly pop lyrics, idioms play a crucial role in enhancing expressive depth. However, there remains limited research on how idioms function within modern song lyrics. This study aims to analyze the use of idiomatic expressions in Taylor Swift’s song “Dancing with Our Hands Tied” to explore how figurative language contributes to lyrical meaning. Addressing this gap, the research employs a qualitative method, collecting data through close observation, including repeated listening and textual analysis of the lyrics. The idioms identified were analyzed using Seidl and McMordie’s classification framework. The findings reveal 22 idiomatic expressions categorized into nine types, including key words with idiomatic uses, idioms with nouns and adjectives, idiomatic pairs, idioms with prepositions, phrasal verbs, verbal idioms, idioms with special subjects, idioms with key words from specific categories, and idioms with comparison. These idioms are shown to reflect emotional tension, love, and inner conflict. The findings suggest that Taylor Swift effectively employs idiomatic language to convey the emotional complexities and nuanced experiences associated with love, thereby enhancing the expressive power of her lyrics.

Abstract

Studies investigating how personality traits, motivation levels, and speaking performance interact are still limited, particularly in the context of Pre-service English teachers in South Sumatera. Thus, this study aims to discover whether extroverts or introverts, based on their motivation levels, exhibit better speaking performance. The population consisted of 336 pre-service English teachers at a state university in South Sumatera, and a sample size of 120 students was chosen using convenience sampling technique. This study employed a quantitative correlational design, with data collection using questionnaires of motivation and personality traits and a speaking performance test and these data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics, i.e. Two-way ANOVA. The results revealed that highly motivated extroverts performed slightly better than their introverted counterparts, and so did low-motivated extroverts, but their differences were not statistically significant. Moreover, the correlation analysis (p = 0.640) and Two-way ANOVA results (p = 0.356 for Personality and p = 0.774 for Motivation) demonstrated no significant correlation between personality traits, motivation levels, and speaking performance. These findings suggest that other than personality and motivation alone, other predictors such as linguistic competence, anxiety, and classroom dynamics might have contribution to speaking proficiency.
