Abstract

This study was aimed to find out if the students reading habit and writing interest had a significant correlation as well as gave a significant contribution to their translation ability on Indonesian contextual phrases. One hundred and seventy students of Sriwijaya University, PGRI University and state polytechnic of Sriwijaya took part as the samples. To estimate the correlation among the variables, a quantitative research method including a Pearson Product-Moment Correlation and Multiple Regression were used. The result showed that the correlation between students reading habit and their translation ability on Indonesian contextual phrases was 0.082 with the significant level of 0.287 which meant no significant correlation. The correlation between students writing interest and their translation ability on Indonesian contextual phrases was 0.109 with the significant level of 0.159 indicating also no significant correlation. When both students reading habit and writing interest were combined, the contribution to their translation ability on Indonesian contextual phrases was only 1.4% (R2 0.014) which was too little to be considered significant. Some qualitative explanations for the unexpected results were offered and the implications of the findings were accounted for.

Abstract

ABSTRACT: This study was conducted to analyze the students’ final report writings in the English Department of State Polytechnic of Sriwijaya. It was trying to discover if the students were still making grammatical mistakes in their final writing project or if such a thing was already non-existent. When the mistakes had been found, the English grammatical points were referred to to classify the kinds of mistakes that had occurred. Percentage was also made to indicate the most frequently found grammatical errors down to the least. From here it would seem that the students’ writings were only full of grammatical mistakes, but that was because this article focused on the mistakes. The correct structures being occupied remained unattended, as it was not the theme of this article. Again, the results of this study could not be interpreted as the students having bad writing skills. It was just that their good structural points were not to be brought up for discussions as it was not the topic in this particular research. In addition, the writing papers being chosen were the ones that had been examined in the students’ report presentation seminar and been kept in the library of the English department which anyone could easily access. After the research was done, the findings were rather beyond expectation. The students made wrong use of even the simplest structures like past tense, to be, and plural forms of nouns. However, it was presumably and more likely due to them being careless and not because of their ignorance on the matter. Keywords: grammatical errors, writing skills, ignorance

Abstract

This study aims to design a video script for the Travelin application at PT. Angkasa Pura II Palembang to facilitate customers' digital check-in and assist support officers. Employing a Research and Development (R&D) approach adapted from Plomp (1997) and utilising a qualitative descriptive design, the script design process included five stages: (1) preliminary investigation, (2) design, (3) realisation/development, (4) testing, evaluation, and revision, and (5) implementation. Data collection techniques comprised literature reviews and interviews, with thematic analysis applied to the interview data. Three experts, selected purposely—a scriptwriting expert, an Indonesian language expert, and an English language expert—participated in the script revision. Key findings from experts’ feedback highlighted the need to simplify sentences, enhance content engagement, incorporate contemporary language, and avoid redundancy. Language-specific suggestions included refining diction, addressing Indonesian affixes (e.g., di-), italicising English terms, and converting complex sentences to simpler structures. This refined script is anticipated to enhance the effectiveness of the Travelin application video at PT. Angkasa Pura II Palembang offers clear guidance to customers and improves digital security check-in processes.

Abstract

This article was written with the purpose of investigating the cross-cultural communication barriers experienced by Indonesian International Student Mobility Awards (IISMA) for Vocational Students 2022 awardees at Phoenix Academy during their time studying in Perth, Australia, as well as their solutions to overcome said barriers. Aligned with the research’s objectives and subjects, the method used in conducting this research is the qualitative method. The writer conducted a series of in-depth interviews with 14 (fourteen) IISMA for Vocational Students 2022 awardees at Phoenix Academy. The writer found the six main barriers they had been subjected to during their stay based on the theory by Kiss (2005): different communication styles, different attitudes towards conflicts, different approaches to completing tasks, different decision-making styles, different attitudes towards disclosure, and different approaches to knowing. The writer concluded that their strategies to overcome each barrier varied according to the awardees’ personal approach and causes. Thorough analysis of the data was performed by dissecting the awardees’ experiences, interpreting their opinions, and correlating them with the relevant theory. It is aimed for this article to be able to aid the future batches of IISMA awardees or recipients of other international programs.
