Abstract

This study focuses on integrating subjects in the area of hospitality industry with Writing 1 for students of English Department at higher Technical Vocational Education Training (TVET).  The integrating is necessary because language is taught for contextual communication not for the sake of the language itself.  The objective of this study is to combine hospitality industry subjects such as House Keeping, Hotel Management, with the purpose of Writing 1 and it is called interdisciplinary learning. To reach the objective, mix method is used. Qualitative method is used and it is supported by quantitative one.  Several factors are involved in this study. They are curriculum, teachers of hospitality subjects, English teachers, Students of English Department, and the competency expected from Writing 1. The result shows that high engagement is required to make interdisciplinary learning work. Several subjects in hospitality industries are identified to be integrated in Writing 1 including Guiding Technique, Profession Ethics, Tourism Marketing, Hygiene and Sanitation, Hotel Management, Tourism Destination and Attraction. The contentof those subjects are simplified according to the objective of Writing 1 for higher TVET. Keywords: Interdisciplinary Approach, Writing, English Teaching, Hospitality Industry

Abstract

People can acquire valuable information for their lives if they have reading skills. Each individual has his own unique goal in reading. Therefore, some considerations need to be made to improve the skills especially regarding the approaches that can be used. One of the approach that can be applied in teaching reading is skill-based approach. Quantitative correlational study was employed to explore the contribution of skill-based approach on reading achievement of EFL students. The number of the respondents were eighty-one which were taken randomly from the students of Sriwijaya State Polytechnic semester two on the academic year 2023-2024. The questionnaire regarding skill-based approach and their reading scores were used to collect the data; and they were analyzed by using descriptive statistic, Pearson coefficient correlation and linear regression. Students’ perception regarding skill-based approach showed that 35.80% of the respondents have moderate perception; 45.68% have high perception, and 18.52% have a very high perception. In terms of reading achievement, 9.88% of respondents were sometimes able to comprehend; 56.79% were often able to comprehend reading; and 33.33% were usually able to comprehend reading. There was a significant but moderate correlation between the variables (R=0.493). The influence was significant and the contribution was 24.3%.

Abstract

This study explores the creation of a compelling copywriting script designed to promote the Palembang Bird Park. The methodology employed a systematic approach, encompassing idea generation, outline creation, research, material selection, message planning, structural arrangement, script drafting, testing, and finalization. Expert consultations were integral throughout the process, ensuring thoroughness and effectiveness. Data were gathered via observations and interviews, facilitating informed script development. Rigorous testing ensued, involving feedback from experts to refine content and language use. The outcome is a meticulously crafted script titled “Palembang Bird Park as a Tourism Destination in Palembang,” poised to captivate audiences and make a copywriting script to promote Palembang Bird Park.

Abstract

Andikpas LPKA Kelas I Palembang adalah anggota lembaga pemasyarakatan kelas I di Palembang yang telah mengikuti pelatihan dan pendampingan dalam pembuatan bakery dan kuliner khas Palembang. Pelatihan ini bertujuan untuk memberdayakan peserta agar dapat mandiri secara ekonomi melalui pengembangan bisnis kuliner dengan sentuhan khas Palembang. Diharapkan bahwa pelatihan ini memberikan dampak positif dan bermanfaat bagi peserta dalam merencanakan masa depan dan meningkatkan pemahaman tentang kewirausahaan. Melalui program ini, peserta diberikan pembekalan kewirausahaan, pengetahuan, dan keterampilan praktis yang diperlukan untuk memulai dan mengelola usaha bakery. Selain fokus pada teknik pembuatan kue dan hidangan khas Palembang, pelatihan ini juga mencakup aspek manajemen usaha, pemasaran, dan keahlian interpersonal. Diharapkan bahwa setelah mengikuti pelatihan ini, peserta dapat mandiri secara ekonomi melalui pengembangan bisnis kuliner dengan sentuhan khas Palembang. Hasil dari kegiatan pengabdian ini secara umum dinilai memberikan dampak positif dan bermanfaat bagi peserta, terutama dalam membantu mereka merencanakan masa depan dan meningkatkan pemahaman tentang kewirausahaan.

Abstract

This study aims to develop E-Mpowerment learning media that involves the inclusion of Digipreneur entrepreneurship at Andikpas LPKA Class I Palembang. The development method used is the ADDIE model (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, Evaluation). The study involves education experts, entrepreneurship experts, and students of Andikpas LPKA Class I Palembang as respondents. The result of the development of E-Mpowerment learning media is an interactive digital platform that provides entrepreneurship learning materials tailored to the needs of students at Andikpas LPKA Class I Palembang. The platform is equipped with interactive learning features such as instructional videos, business simulations, and interactive quizzes. Additionally, the platform provides content that can be accessed independently by students and supports Digipreneur entrepreneurship inclusion. This study has generated positive feedback from education experts, entrepreneurship experts, and students. They stated that the E-Mpowerment learning media is effective in improving students' understanding of entrepreneurship concepts, digital skills, and learning motivation. Furthermore, Digipreneur entrepreneurship inclusion provides opportunities for students to develop creativity, innovation, and an entrepreneurial mindset. In conclusion, this study has successfully developed effective E-Mpowerment learning media to enhance entrepreneurship skills among students at Andikpas LPKA Class I Palembang. This learning media provides an interactive and inclusive learning experience through the Digipreneur entrepreneurship approach. It is hoped that this research can serve as a reference for the development of innovative and technology-relevant learning media in the context of entrepreneurship education.

Abstract

This article was written with the purpose of investigating the cross-cultural communication barriers experienced by Indonesian International Student Mobility Awards (IISMA) for Vocational Students 2022 awardees at Phoenix Academy during their time studying in Perth, Australia, as well as their solutions to overcome said barriers. Aligned with the research’s objectives and subjects, the method used in conducting this research is the qualitative method. The writer conducted a series of in-depth interviews with 14 (fourteen) IISMA for Vocational Students 2022 awardees at Phoenix Academy. The writer found the six main barriers they had been subjected to during their stay based on the theory by Kiss (2005): different communication styles, different attitudes towards conflicts, different approaches to completing tasks, different decision-making styles, different attitudes towards disclosure, and different approaches to knowing. The writer concluded that their strategies to overcome each barrier varied according to the awardees’ personal approach and causes. Thorough analysis of the data was performed by dissecting the awardees’ experiences, interpreting their opinions, and correlating them with the relevant theory. It is aimed for this article to be able to aid the future batches of IISMA awardees or recipients of other international programs.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to explore how short story writing, supported by digital tools, can promote the Mengkuang River in Jambu Village as a tourist destination. It examines how the setting, cultural elements, and digital writing techniques influence the narrative, characters, and themes creatively. Using a Qualitative Research Design, the study incorporates interviews, field observations, and digital collaboration in the writing process. This research highlights the effectiveness of combining fiction, digital platforms to enhance tourism promotion and community involvement to comprehend cultural literacy, making Jambu Village's unique culture accessible to a wider audience.
