Abstract

This study aimed to find out whether or not there was any significant difference in reading comprehension between the eighth grade students of Bina Jaya Junior High School Palembang who were taught by using K.W.L graphic organizer technique and those who were not. Seventy-two eighth graders were the sample of the study. The writers did an experimental method by using quasi-experimental design to the two groups of students. The VIII.3 class became the experimental group and the VIII.2 class was the control group. A reading comprehension test was an instrument to collect the data. The result found that the significant level was 0.000 < 0.05, so that (Ha) was accepted and (Ho) was rejected. So, there was a significant difference on students’ reading comprehension between the eighth grade students of Bina Jaya Junior High School Palembang who were taught by using KWL Graphic Organizer and those who were not.

Abstract

This study aimed to find out whether or not there was a significant correlation between students’ learning style preference and their speaking achievement. The data were collected by distributing questionnaire sheets and testing a speaking achievement test for 55 students. It used correlational study. There were two kinds of variables in this study, predictor and criterion variables. The predictor variable was students’ learning style preference (x), and the criterion variable was students’ speaking achievement (Y). The sample was divided into two groups; experimental and control group. There were 30 students for experimental group (VIII.6) and 25 students in a control group (VIII. 1). Pearson product moment coefficients correlation and regression analysis were used to find out whether or not there was a significant relationship between students’ learning styles preference toward speaking achievement of SMPN 12 Palembang. Only students’ learning style in the pre-test of the experimental group was significantly correlated to their speaking achievement. It was also supported by the regression analysis, learning style preference gave 19.4 % contribution to speaking achievement. The speaking test of post-experimental, pre-control, and post-control group was not correlated significantly to learning style preference. And contribution also vice versa. Those three scores from the speaking test did not contribute significantly to learning style preference.

The method of this research was a descriptive quantitative method. The data were collected from 34 essays that were written by the students. The researchers used students’ writing sheets as the instrument. In this case, all types of grammatical errors were classified and described based on the taxonomy of grammatical errors regarding omission, addition, misformation, and misordering. In analyzing students’ errors, the procedure of error analysis was applied. They were identification, description, and explanation. Based on the result of the analysis, there were 257 grammatical errors found in the students’ argumentative essay. It was found that the students made 110 (42.80%) errors of omission, 72 (28.01%) errors of addition, 70 (27.23%) errors of misformation, and 5 errors (1.94%) of misordering. Thus, it can be concluded that omission error was the highest, while error in misordering was the lowest.

This study investigated the correlation between vocabulary mastery and reading comprehension and the influence of vocabulary mastery and reading comprehension. A total of the sample in this study was 105 students from eighth grade students. Vocabulary mastery test and reading comprehension test were the instruments to collect the data. The descriptive statistics and Pearson Product Moment correlation coefficient were used to analyze the data in this study. The findings of this study showed that there was a significant correlation (r = 0.243) was higher than r-table (.190). Then, the level of probability (p) significance (sig.2-tailed) was 0.013 was lower than 0.05. Thus, there was a significant correlation between the students’ vocabulary mastery and their reading comprehension. From the results of regression analysis with a degree of significance of 0.013 showed that there was an influence of the vocabulary mastery on the reading comprehension of 5.9%.it could be concluded that mastery of student vocabulary was an important factor in achieving student reading comprehension.
