Abstract

Background: Obesity is one of the causal factors of chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, hypertension, asthma, arthritis, and cancer. The change in lifestyle and lack of physical activity in children increase the incidence of obesity, accompanied by a decrease in physical fitness. One of the parameters that can be used to determine the level of physical fitness is the maximum oxygen consumption (VO2max). VO2max in children can be increased through aerobic physical exercise, such as Senam Sehat Anak Indonesia (SSAI). SSAI combines aerobic movements and joyful music in order to motivate children to be more excited in gymnastics. Methods: An Experimental study with the pre-post test design among 23 samples who fulfill the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The exercises were administered twice a week for six weeks. VO2max data were measured before and after the exercise in the first week and week 12. Data of VO2max were analyzed using the data normality test with Shapiro-Wilk, then continued with Wilcoxon test to determine the difference of VO2max. Results: There is significant difference of VO2max between before and after SSAI (p < 0.05). Conclusion: There is an increase in the maximum oxygen volume (VO2max) after the SSAI exercise in childhood obesity.

Abstract

Introduction: Excessive fat accumulation in the obese child causes complex problems in the respiratory system. Respiratory system function can be improved by exercise. One exercise model that is suitable for children is Senam Sehat Anak Indonesia (SSAI). The quality of the respiratory function system is measured using Peak Expiratory Flow Rate (PEFR).Objective: to validate the PEFR’s differences in obese children before and after performing SSAI.Methods: This research using one group pre-posttest experimental design with total sample of 20 obese children using purposive sampling method. The research instrument uses weight scale, height scale, and peak flow meter. SSAI was given to all subjects twice a week for six weeks. Paired T Test statistical analysis was used to examine the PEFR’s differences before and after performing SSAI, considered significant if p<0.05.Results: The PEFR’s mean of all subjects before performing SSAI was 258.25 ± 39.51 L∕minute, while PEFR’s mean after performing SSAI twice a week for 6 weeks was 282.50 ± 43.03 L∕minute, (p=0,000).Conclusion: The PEFR’s mean of obese children was increase significantly after performing SSAI twice a week for 6 weeks

Abstract

Background Osteoporosis is a complication that often occurs in thalassemia major patients. This complication is still not widely known. This community service program aims to increase the knowledge of families of major thalassemia patients in Rembang Regency and Grobogan Regency regarding the complications of osteoporosis in thalassemia patients. Methods Education about osteoporosis, risk of osteoporosis in thalassemia patients, and prevention of osteoporosis. Extension method with presentation and discussion. The activity was attended by 20 thalassemia families in the Rembang Regency and 21 families of thalassemia patients in the Grobogan Regency. Before and after counseling, pretest and posttest questionnaires were completed to measure the knowledge of families of thalassemia major patients regarding bone complications in thalassemia patients. Results and Discussion Nearly half (46.34%) of respondents did not know the risk of osteoporosis in thalassemia. After counseling, 82.93% of respondents knew the risk of osteoporosis in thalassemia, but there were still 17.07% of respondents who still did not know this risk. Conclusion There is a significant increase in family knowledge of thalassemia major patients about the risk of osteoporosis in thalassemia. Further efforts to increase knowledge are needed with written information media (leaflets) given to families of thalassemia major patients

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Thalassemia patients with repeated transfusions (multi-transfusion) are often at risk of experiencing early osteoporosis. Several studies have demonstrated that osteoporosis in these individuals was associated with altered bone remodeling, characterized by decreased insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) and serum calcium ions, as well as increased serum β-Cross Laps (β-CTx) levels. Despite the prevalence of this condition, there is limited literature on the relationship between IGF-1 levels and calcium ions with β-CTx. Therefore, this study was conducted to examine the relationship between IGF-1 and calcium ions levels with serum β-CTx in multi-transfused β-thalassemia major patients.METHODS: A cross sectional study involved 29 thalassemia patients with multiple transfusions, aged 2-18 years, that were selected from the electronic medical records. Calcium ion levels were examined using ion selective electrode method. Subsequently, IGF-1 and serum β-CTx levels were examined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), and the data were analyzed using the Pearson correlation test.RESULTS: The results showed that the mean serum IGF-1 levels, calcium ion, and β-CTx were 20.11±20.763 ng/mL, 1.26±0.07 mmol/L, and 9330.40±1696.76 ng/mL, respectively. Statistical analysis showed a significant relationship between the levels of IGF-1 (r=-0.573; p=0.001) and calcium ion (r=-0.373; p=0.046) with serum β-CTx. A moderate negative relationship was found between IGF-1 levels and β-CTx, while calcium ion levels and β-CTx showed a weak negative relationship.CONCLUSION: A moderate negative correlation between IGF-1 and serum β-CTx, and a weak negative correlation between calcium ion and serum β-CTx suggest that IGF-1 and calcium ions may serve as potential indicators of bone turnover and osteoporosis risk in multi-transfused β-thalassemia major patients, underscoring their potential role in routine clinical evaluations.KEYWORDS: miR-200a expression, NO level, early-onset preeclampsia, late-onset preeclampsia
