Abstract

This paper begins by questioning the sustainability of civic engagement with the notion of ‘social capital’ as the key concept of Peace and Conflict Studies. The main question is: to what extent does socio-political tension affect forms of civic engagement? This paper examines interethnic relations (Dayak, Malay, Chinese, and Javanese) developed in the Stella Maris Credit Union (SMCU) in Pontianak, West Kalimantan, Indonesia under the context of ethnic tension. SMCU is a microfinance association where people with various backgrounds (religion, race, and ethnicity) interact in an economic community, sharing benefits and values. In the beginning, SMCU was initiated as an economic program of Stella Maris Catholic Church in North Pontianak. This church did not only serve the church members, but also for all ethnicities and religions through Pontianak. As a site drastically impacted by ethnic conflict in the post-Suharto era, Pontianak recently has been growing as a city of ethnic diversity. However, the recent rise of ethnic tension has contested this growing multiethnic coexistence. It is important to see the strength of civic engagement in responding to issues of conflict in a multiethnic society. This study explores SMCU members and their personal experiences, wondering whether the tension may or may not affect the forms of civic engagement. It argues civic engagement can sustain under the moment of socio-political tension. Developing economy and peace education are the main reasons for interethnic relations among SMCU members. Moreover, although there are treats for the plural society, experiencing diversity in the form of associational and neighborhood relations contributes to social coexistence. This study finds that forms of civic engagement among the members shape expressions and attitudes of resilience in facing social tension.

Abstract

Buku pertama berjudul “What is Religious Authority? Cultivating Islamic Community in Indonesia” ditulis oleh Ismail Fajrie Alatas. Buku kedua diedit oleh Kathryn M. Robinson, dengan judul “Mosques and Imams; Everyday Islam in Eastern Indonesia.”

Abstract

In 2022, the National Counter-Terrorism Agency released data that over the last 10 (ten) years the involvement of women in terrorism activism has increased by 10%. The increase was coupled with an increase in divorce cases among spouses of perpetrators of terrorism. The objective of this study is to elucidate the reasons and mechanisms behind the correlation between the surge in women's involvement in terrorism and the phenomenon of divorce. The data were collected through in-depth interviews, observations, and tracing of data from the National Counter-Terrorism Agency. The data collected were then analyzed using Anthony Giddens' Structural Theory. According to the findings, multiple factors contributed to the divorce of terrorist couples, such as insufficient financial resources, pressure from peer groups to end the marriage due to differences in supporting the Islamic State, and the realization of no longer wanting to be associated with husbands engaged in terrorist activities. By applying Giddens' framework, these results formed a compelling argument that the wives of terrorists possessed a discursive awareness of the societal context in which they lived, leading them to make the decision to divorce their husbands.

Abstract

The Credit Union (CU) movement in Pontianak City, West Kalimantan, has long been recognized for its significant role in enhancing the economic well-being of its members. However, its contribution to strengthening civil society dimensions is often overlooked. This study aims to analyze and identify in depth how credit unions play a crucial role in building and reinforcing the foundations of civil society in Pontianak, beyond their primary function as microfinance institutions. Using qualitative data collected in 2019 from the Stella Maris Credit Union in Pontianak, this research reveals that CU functions not only as a provider of inclusive financial access but also as an essential space for economic self-reliance, democratic participation, and social solidarity, all of which are vital elements for strengthening the civil society ecosystem. The findings demonstrate that through cooperative principles and sustainable educational programs, both financial and non-financial, CU has successfully fostered collective awareness, enhanced financial literacy, and promoted a spirit of mutual cooperation among its members. Furthermore, its participatory decision-making mechanism reflects grassroots democratic practices essential to the empowerment of civil society. Thus, the Credit Union has transformed into an agent of social change, empowering communities to act independently and collectively in addressing socio-economic challenges. The implications of this study suggest that Credit Unions should be viewed as an important pillar of civil society in Pontianak and as a potential model for other community-based institutions in Indonesia in building a more independent, empowered, and democratic society.
