Abstract

Purpose ― This study examines the impacts of the Unemployment Benefit Program (Jaminan Kehilangan Pekerjaan, JKP) on the duration of job search in Indonesia using internal data sourced from the Employment Social Security Administering Agency (Badan Penyelenggara Jaminan Sosial Tenaga Kerja, BPJS TK).Method ― The Regression Kinked Design (RKD) model and Ordinary Least Square (OLS) estimation method are used to analyze the data on laid-off workers who have received the JKP benefits.Findings ― On average, the JKP beneficiaries have a longer duration of job search than laid-off workers who do not receive benefits. An increase in the replacement rate of the JKP benefits is associated with an increased duration of both job search and benefit claims. The RKD plot indicates that a replacement rate lower than 45% may decrease the duration of benefit claims and job searches. Implication ― The results imply that the government should consider two potential options: (1) maintaining the current level of monetary benefits that leads to a longer job search duration; in other words, the program management must continue providing benefits for the maximum duration offered (up to 6 months), or, (2) reducing the monetary benefits, if BPJS TK aims to reduce the job duration. The results may change if a more robust labor market information system is available.Originality ― This study represents the first attempt to investigate the impact of the Unemployment Benefit Program (JKP) on job search duration in Indonesia. It might also be important to enrich the existing literature on the impact of similar programs in developing countries and countries with large populations.

Abstract

The 2018 Jakarta-Palembang Asian Games is the most significant event in Asian Games history regarding contested sports, participating nations, and athletes. This study identifies the long-term benefits of the event to the host country, focusing on the international attendees’ propensity to revisit Indonesia after the event. We administered a survey throughout the two weeks of the event, yielding usable responses from 1,914 international attendees, including athletes, officials, journalists, committees, and spectators. We use the survey results to describe attendees’ evaluation of the event and Indonesia as the host country. Further, this study also estimates a multinomial logistic regression to identify the association between tourist characteristics and their intention to revisit Indonesia beyond the event. The results show that providing information and communication technology, transportation arrangement, culture, and hosting cities positively correlate with the propensity to return. In contrast, the previous visit to Indonesia has the opposite effect. International respondents mainly express their desire to revisit Indonesia on a long-stay plan. Lastly, we also discuss the academic and practical implications of our findings.

Abstract

This study examines domestic visitor expenditure and behavioural intentions during the 2018 Asian Games in Indonesia, focusing on short-term economic impacts and long-term event support. The primary data was collected through a survey of 401 domestic respondents, including athletes, officials, journalists, spectators, and local committees in Jakarta, West Java and Palembang. The research analyses spending levels, expenditure composition, and satisfaction with event aspects such as facilities, transportation, accommodation, security, and information access. Results indicate substantial variation in spending across respondent categories, with national athletes recording the highest average expenditure, while spectators largely spent on food, beverages, and souvenirs. Demographic factors, including age, gender, and event location, also influenced total spending. Despite satisfaction with sports venues and security, respondents reported notable concerns regarding transportation, access to information, and telecommunications. National pride was high, although support for hosting future mega-events was evenly divided, suggesting mixed perceptions of long-term benefits. The findings highlight the role of domestic tourism in mega-sport events and provide practical implications for event management, especially in improving visitor information systems and mobility services. This study contributes to the growing literature on sports tourism in emerging economies by addressing domestic spending determinants and behavioural intentions toward future event hosting.
