Abstract

Diasporas are often said to live in “two worlds”. The conflicting relationship between their physical and mental states results in a fissure where symbolic and physical violence become the main drive for diaspora to survive. This violence comes not only due to these diaspora’s own inner conflicts, but also due to the discrepancies between their native and internalized culture with the external norms and values that surround them in their current stay. The theme of diaspora and violence has been recurrent in American cinematic representation. As the most recent example, an independent film entitled Everything, Everywhere All at Once delves into this issue by incorporating a storyline of a Chinese-diasporic family in the United States who encounters various problems regarding their cultural differences to their surroundings. This article seeks to examine the cultural dynamics only of Evelyn, Waymond, and Joy in the film’s storyline amidst the abundance of multiversal plot points that serve as the pivotal exposition in the film. The analyses are textually grounded based on Homi Bhabha’s notion of liminality and contextually on the differing conception of violence in Chinese and American contexts respectively. This article draws from a Taoist concept of Wu wei to interpret the latter point. This study finds that the film represents diasporic characters within a liminal space that forces them to produce their own “maneuver” in order to survive. The parental problems that Evelyn has with Joy as well as her familial and ideological problems with Waymond are found to be propelled by such culturally-laden maneuvers. The film then can be read as an allegory of Chinese-American diaspora’s liminal experience in the United States. This allegory contains an ethical stance where the idea of non-violence (wu wei) becomes the utopian message of the film.

Abstract

The focus of this research problem discusses the inner conflict experienced by Chokichi as the main character in the short story Sumidagawa by Nagai Kafu which has a background in the Meiji era. This study uses the conflict theory put forward by Lewin, which divides inner conflict into three, namely approach-approach, approach-avoidance and avoidance-avoidance conflict. The purpose of this study is to identify and interpret the form of inner conflict in the main character in the short story Sumidagawa by Nagai Kafu. The benefit of this research is to contribute to the development of science, especially in Japanese literature in Indonesia. For general readers, it is hoped that this research article can introduce Nagai Kafu’s work as a reading reference, especially for the Sumidagawa short story, as well as a means for readers to appreciate contemporary works of Japanese literature. This research method use a descriptive qualitative analysis method to analyze each form of the main character’s inner conflict in each storyline of Sumidagawa short story. The data source for this research comes from the Sumidagawa short story by Nagai Kafu which is contained in the Aozora Bunko digital library along with an Indonesian translation book entitled Sungai Sumida which is included in the Collection of Japanese Short Stories by Hanafi (2017). The results of research on Chokichi’s inner conflict based on Lewin’s conflict theory show that he experiences a form of approach-avoidance conflict and avoidance-avoidance conflict. This form of inner conflict is represented in Chokichi in the form of desires that are not in line with reality, disputes that are not in line with the will, and confusion in dealing with a problem. Keywords: Chokichi; inner conflict; Meiji; Nagai Kafu; Sumidagawa.

Abstract

Abstract

Ono Saseo was a Japanese cartoonist who was recruited as a member of the Japanese Army's Propaganda Division and sent to Java from 1942 to 1945. During his service in Indonesia, he created hundreds of artworks for both military and personal purposes. The purpose of this research is to understand Ono Saseo's views and humanistic values towards the Indonesian people. The research method used is qualitative research, examining Ono Saseo's writings and drawings to uncover the meanings contained within. Additionally, the researcher also examined the opinions of other artist who lived during the same period as Ono Saseo to gain a clearer depiction of Ono. The results of the research show that not all of Ono's drawings published in the Japanese mass media in Indonesia depict elements of Japanese foreign political conflicts against the West, but rather, most of them portray the joyful atmosphere and the harmony of the Indonesian people and Western. Ono's significant attention to the Indonesian society, natural environment, and other nations residing in Indonesia demonstrates his deep humanistic side, both as an intellectual and as a human being.

Abstract

This research aims to discover the relationship between Japanese and Indonesian intellectuals during the Japanese military occupation of Indonesia, as recorded by Asano Akira during his assignment in Indonesia in 1942. Serving as members of the Propaganda Division in Indonesia, these Japanese intellectuals had to recruit and collaborate with Indonesian intellectuals to further Japan's military objectives in the Greater East Asia War. The method used in this research is qualitative, employing textual analysis. The research reveals that Asano's interest in the ideas of Arthur Schopenhauer and Okakura Tenshin on asceticism, self-denial, simplicity, and Eastern aesthetics nurtured his Eastern ideological perspectives. It was from this ideology that he eventually came to feel solidarity with his fellow Asians oppressed by Western domination. Therefore, this sense of ideology ultimately led him to establish friendships and cooperate with Indonesian intellectuals while serving in the Propaganda Division of Japanese Military Government.

Abstract

The personal secrets of humans are just as though a deep and dark well. The peculiarities that occur within human beings not only attract numerous psychiatrists to unravel them but also captivate a Japanese writer, Haruki Murakami. In his novel entitled The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle, he conveys subjective experiences through his main character. The novel tells the story of Toru Okada’s subconscious journey. It is where human memories connect with various ancient subconscious thoughts, strange illusions appear, and unheard voices manifest to ordinary humans. These are common indications of schizophrenia symptoms. The research reveals the challenge in identifying this syndrome, as affected individuals become detached from the “true reality.” Consequently, a more structured approach is deemed necessary to facilitate their reintegration. With the assistance of mythology, wherein this narrative serves as a collectively recognized storyline, those trapped within their fantastical worlds can effectively communicate and establish connections with those residing in the “true reality.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to analyze the narrative structure in two short stories, Gadis Korek Api by Djenar Maesa Ayu and Pesta Tubuh by Oka Rusmini, using Genette’s narratology theory, particularly focusing on the aspects of order and frequency. The analysis shows that both stories employ the technique of analepsis, which is the insertion of past events into the present narrative in a non-chronological manner. In terms of frequency, Gadis Korek Api features anaphoric and iterative frequency, while Pesta Tubuh contains anaphoric and repetitive frequency. Both short stories present a non-linear narrative structure that emphasizes the recurring trauma and experiences of the main characters. The past is gradually revealed as part of a living narrative that shapes the characters’ identities. In terms of frequency, some events shows that the content of the fairy tale read or recited by the main character functions as a reinforcement and solace for the woman's suffering. This study demonstrates that the application of Genette’s narratology yields unique findings, particularly in identifying patterns of analepsis and narrative frequency in these two short stories. Thus, this research not only enriches the reading of both stories but also underscores the importance of structural approaches in modern narrative studies.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the representation of yōkai in the anime Mononoke (2007) as a visual manifestation of the characters’ psychological trauma. Unlike the portrayal of yōkai in traditional Japanese folklore—which tends to emphasize mythological or horror aspects—Mononoke reconstructs these figures as embodiments of unexpressed inner wounds such as guilt, repression, anger, and loss. This research employs a qualitative-descriptive approach with symbolic and narrative analysis methods, grounded in trauma theory as proposed by Cathy Caruth. The analysis reveals that yōkai in this anime function not merely as horror elements, but as media through which complex psychological conflicts are conveyed. Through symbolism, visual atmosphere, and metaphorical narrative structure, Mononoke gives voice to trauma that cannot be articulated directly. As such, the anime does not simply depict supernatural beings but serves as a reflective space that connects folklore, psychology, and visual cultural expression. This study is expected to contribute to interdisciplinary understanding across Japanese cultural studies, literary psychology, and contemporary media analysis.
