Abstract

Spodoptera litura is a major pest in soybean cultivation causing damage by 80%. One of control is done  by using bintaro plants (Cerbera manghas) potential as a botanical pesticide (insecticide). This study aims to determine the effectiveness of botanical pesticide from bintaro extract and get the precise extract concentration of fruit, young leaves, and old leaves of bintaro to control Spodoptera litura on soybean plants, and its influence to  the growth of soybean plants. This study used an experimental method that is designed in a single factor completely randomized design using pesticides Bintaro (young leaves, old leaves, and fruit), which consists of three concentrations (100 g / l, 200 g / l, and 300 g / l), add two treatments, namely, sprayed with water and a  synthetic pesticides as a control. Result showed the leaves and fruit of Bintaro at concentrations of 100 g/ l to 300 g/ l by solvent extraction has not been effectively used as botanical pesticide to control Spodoptera litura on soybean plants. Old leaf Bintaro extract (100 g/ l) produces highest pest mortality value and  rate of 40.00% and 2.00. The use of botanical pesticide from extract bintaro (fruit and leaf) is not inhibit the growth of soybean plants.

Abstract

The research to observe the effect of the kinds and thickness of organic mulch toward the population of weeds and melon yield was conducted in Wringin, Purwobinangun, Pakem, Sleman District of Yogyakarta, at February up to May 2004. The research site has the 500 m above sea level altitude and the Regosol soil type. The field experiment was arranged in a single factor Randomized Completely Block Design with three blocks as replications. The treatments of mulch kinds consisted of 8 levels which are: no mulch application, plastic mulch, straw mulch with 4 cm, 8 cm, and 12 cm thickness, bamboo leaves mulch with 4 cm, 8 cm, and 12 cm thickness. The effect of treatments on weeds population suppression, melon growth and yield were observed during the growth period. The result showed that the bamboo leaves mulch with 8 cm thickness and plastic mulch significantly suppressed weeds population until 67 days after planting in compared with the other treatments. Straw mulch and bamboo leaves mulch significantly increased the component of melon yield, but the kind and thickness of organic mulch was not significantly affected the growth and yield of melon.

Abstract

An research  on weed  control  with legumes  in sweet   corn intercropping   was conducted   in Kasihan, Bantul  District  of Yogyakarta  on February  to June 2003. The experiment  was aimed  to study  the role of legume  crop to control  weed growth  in  the intercropping    of sweet  corn. The experiment  was arranged in a single factor randomized  completely block  design (RCBD) with three blocks  as replication. The treatment  was the kind of legumes   i.e  groundnut, mungbean and soybean  planted  with sweetcorn  in the ratio of 1: 1, 1:2,  and 1:3 to be compared to  sole  crop of sweet  com  and legumes. The result  of this experiment showed that  legumes   existence reduced light  intensity   on soil surface. Presence of legumes as second crop with ratio up to 1:3 was significantly reduced  the weed growth  but not significantly influenced growth and yield of sweet corn. The higher the ratio of sweet  corn-legumes, the achievement of legumes yield  and land equivalent ratio were higher.

Abstract

The existence of weeds on sweet corn crops can lead to competition that reduce the yield. The aim of this research was to obtain the optimum crop proportion of corn-peanut plants in suppressing weed growth but not decrease the yield of sweet corn. The experiment was conducted using a single factor field experimental method arranged in a complete randomized block design with 3 blocks as replication. The treatment was the proportion of sweet corn-peanut population consisting of 3 levels, i.e 1:1, 1:2, 1:3, sweet corn monoculture and peanut monoculture as comparison. The results of this research showed that intercropping of sweet corn+peanut with  population proportion of 1:2 can suppress weed growth in on the 9th week (at harvest) without decreasing sweet corn yield.
