Abstract

This study compares the effectiveness of four disaster mitigation education media—educational videos, e-comics, storybooks, and Virtual Reality (VR)—in improving elementary school students’ understanding, engagement, and motivation in disaster-prone areas, particularly in Central Java. Using a quantitative questionnaire-based survey method on 143 students and 16 teachers, the results showed that e-comics were the most effective media. E-comics significantly improved students’ understanding of disaster mitigation concepts (average score of 4.5), attracted students’ engagement (average score of 4.7), and motivated them to act in disaster situations (average score of 4.6). These advantages were driven by interactive visual elements and relevant stories that made it easier for students to understand the material. In contrast, media such as VR and storybooks have limitations related to accessibility and interactive nature. This study recommends the use of e-comics as the main educational media in disaster mitigation learning at the elementary school level.

Abstract

THE EFFECT OF COASTAL ABRASION ON THE SOCIAL RESILIENCE OF COASTAL COMMUNITIES IN LIMBANGAN VILLAGE, ULUJAMI, PEMALANG By Zulfatun Nikmah (3719110016) A maritime country is a country with a larger water area than land. Indonesia is one of the maritime countries with the longest coastline in the world. Climate change has a significant impact on coastal areas, as it can lead to coastal erosion. This study aims to determine the impact of coastal erosion on the social resilience of the coastal community in Limbangan Village, Ulujami District, Pemalang Regency. The research design used in this study is The Explanatory Design, which aims to explain the causal relationship between the phenomenon of coastal erosion and the social resilience of coastal communities. Primary data was collected through questionnaires distributed to coastal residents and supported by secondary data from various sources. The research findings concluded that the greater the coastal damage caused by erosion, the greater the resulting impact, thereby reducing the community’s ability to recover from post-disaster conditions. However, the overall enhancement of social resilience can essentially be achieved through the strengthening of development across nine elements of community social resilience. Keywords: Coastal erosion, explanatory design, social resilience, maritime

Abstract

Abstract

Wonosari Village, located within the Beringin River Basin (DAS), Semarang City, is an area that regularly experiences flooding due to a combination of high rainfall, changes in upstream land use, and river sedimentation. Various mitigation strategies, both structural and non-structural, have been implemented by the government and the community. However, the implementation of these strategies has the potential to cause environmental impacts that require comprehensive analysis. This study aims to (1) identify existing flood mitigation strategies in Wonosari Village, (2) analyze the positive and negative environmental impacts of each strategy, and (3) formulate recommendations for more sustainable mitigation strategies. The research method used is a mixed-methods with a qualitative approach through in-depth interviews with stakeholders (BPBD, community leaders) and field observations, as well as a SWOT analysis to evaluate environmental impacts. The results of the study, which have been subjected to a SWOT analysis, indicate that structural strategies such as river normalization and embankment construction are effective in reducing short-term inundation, but have significant negative impacts in the form of loss of riparian vegetation, increased riverbank erosion, and changes in the aquatic ecosystem. On the other hand, non-structural strategies such as early warning systems and community education programs tend to have positive environmental impacts, but their effectiveness depends heavily on community participation and awareness. This study concludes that an integrated mitigation approach, which balances technical interventions with nature-based solutions and strengthening social capacity, is key to sustainably reducing flood risk in Wonosari Village.
