Abstract

Introduction: Cephalometric analysis have been widely used in orthodontics. The analysis can be conducted in two methods: conventional and digital methods. Practitioners prefer using computerized cephalometric analysis due to its simplicity and less time-consuming compared to manual or conventional method. The objective of this study was to identify discrepancies between Conventional Steiner cephalometric analysis and digital cephalometric analysis using CephNinja® Application. This study was an experimental in vivo study with descriptive and comparative approach. Methods: Thirty two negative and digital cephalograms were traced manually using Steiner analysis and digitally using CephNinja® software application. Tracing results of manually analyzed cephalogram and digitally analyzed cephalogram were then compared. Results: There were no distinguished discrepancies between the tracing results of both manually and digitally analyzed cephalogram using Steiner analysis. Conclusion: there was no significant difference of steiner cephalometric analysis conducted using conventional tracing and digital method using CephNinja® application software.

Abstract

Introduction: Tooth eruption is influenced by various factors, one of them is nutritional factors. This study was aimed to obtain information regarding the relationship between the number of permanent teeth erupted with nutritional status in 6-7-years-old children. Methods: This research was cross-sectional and correlational data analysis. The study was conducted towards as much as 57 children aged 6-7 years old. The sampling method was the purposive sampling technique conducted in Tanjungsari 2 State Elementary School, Sumedang Regency. The nutritional status was calculated based on the Body Mass Index (BMI) according to age from the anthropometric measurements of body weight and height. Assessment of nutritional status was performed using the WHO Anthroplus® v1.0.4 application. Statistical analysis was performed using the Spearman correlation test and Mann-Whitney difference test. Results: The correlation test has obtained the value of ρ = 0.037, which showed a significant relationship between the number of permanent teeth erupted with nutritional status of 6-7-years-old children. The Spearman correlation coefficient has obtained the value of r = 0.277, thus showed the weak strength and positive direction of the correlation. Conclusion: There is a relationship between the nutritional status and the number of permanent teeth erupted in children aged 6-7 years old in the Tanjungsari Sub-district of Sumedang Regency. The higher the nutritional status of a child, the more number of permanent teeth erupted.

Abstract

Introduction: Fixed orthodontic is one of the option to correct malocclusions. Factors of age, gender, educational background and occupation of an individual can affect the understanding and concern regarding oral health. It also deter-mines a person’s attitude in choosing the right treatment. This study was aimed to determine the distribution of patient with fixed orthodontic treatment based on age, gender, education level, and occupation in Universitas Padjadjaran Dental Hospital. Methods: This study was conducted with a descriptive method by collecting all the data of the patient with fixed orthodontic treatment from the medical record in Universitas Padjadjaran Dental Hospital during the 2009-2011 period. Results: The results showed that fixed orthodontic treatment was majority used by 71.65% adults, 79.53% females, 50.39% patients in the level of education of high school, and 53.54% by the university student. Conclusion: Fixed orthodontic treatment is used more by adults, females, high school graduated, and patient with occupation as a university student.

Abstract

Introduction: Premature loss mainly occurs in mixed dentition periods in their maxillary deciduous and/or mandibular canine, first molar, and/or second molar. The mixed dentition stage occurs in elementary school-aged children, mark with malocclusions and tooth decays, which can be observed from a very high def-t index. This condition will also lead to an abnormal molar relationship. This study was aimed to analyse the correlation of premature loss and molar relationship of mixed dentition children with a very high def-t index. Methods: An analytical observational study with a cross-sectional approach was conducted towards 43 elementary children of Ciawi, Cikeruh 1, and Cikeruh 2 Public Elementary School (SDN), Jatinangor Regency, West Java, Indonesia, aged 7-9 years. The sample was chosen using the purposive sampling method, based on the sample criteria and their willingness to be research subjects. The premature loss of deciduous teeth and primary first molar relationship were observed through extraoral and intraoral examination. The correlation of the premature loss and molar relationship was analysed using Spearman’s rank correlation test. Results: Premature loss significantly affected the permanent first molars relationship in children with no succedaneous teeth (p=0.02, p<0.05), however, it was showed no significant effect in children with succedaneous teeth (p=0.07, p>0.05). The Spearman’s rank correlation test results showed a positive correlation between premature loss and molar relationship of mixed dentition children with a very high def-t index. Conclusion: Premature loss significantly affected the permanent first molars relationship in children with no succedaneous teeth. However, it was showed no significant effect in children with succedaneous teeth. A positive correlation is found between premature loss and molar relationship of mixed dentition children with a very high def-t index. The higher the premature loss, the more abnormal molar relationship will be found in mixed dentition children with a very high def-t index.
