Abstract

Abstract The change of curriculum has affected the approach of English learning in Indonesia, especially for Vocational School education. In curriculum 2013, the content of English material focuses on general English which does not meet students’ needs that require teachers to teach ESP. Therefore, teachers need to develop ESP teaching materials. The limitations of their knowledge, time, and experience make them uncreative and tend to choose the available book. Furthermore, the government do not facilitate them to have a training or workshop about material development. This community service program is urgent to conduct to help them in developing ESP teaching material. The teacher joined FGD, seminar, and workshop. The results of this community service program are; 1) there is improvement in teachers’ knowledge about ESP material development steps; 2) teachers’ motivation in developing ESP teaching material is increased, and 3) the quality of their ESP teaching material is quite good and applicable for their students. Abstrak Perubahan Kurikulum telah mempengaruhi pendekatan pembelajaran bahasa Inggris di Indonesia khususnya pada Sekolah Menengah Kejuruan (SMK). Hal ini juga berpengaruh pada buku ajar yang diberikan untuk para peserta didik di SMK. Pada kurikukum 2013 bahan ajar yang disediakan berisi Bahasa Inggris secara umum (General English). Padahal adanya perbedaan jurusan di SMK menjadi tuntutan perbedaan kebutuhan siswa dalam pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris dan mengharuskan guru mengajarkan ESP (English for Specific Purposes) sesuai dengan jurusan peserta didiknya. Tugas guru dalam pengembangan bahan ajar sangat dperlukan, akan tetapi dengan keterbatasan ilmu pengetahuan, waktu, serta pengalaman pengembangan bahan ajar yang kurang membuat guru cenderung tidak kreatif dan hanya menggunakan bahan ajar yang sudah disediakan oleh Kemendikbud saja. Selain itu ketersediaan pelatihan pengembangan bahan ajar dari MGMP maupun dari Dinas Pendidikan dan Kebudayaan setempat belum pernah dilakukan. Melihat pentingnya hal tersebut maka pelatihan pengembangan bahan ajar bagi guru-guru SMK dilakukan dengan beberapa metode seperti Focus Group Discussion (FGD) dan workshop. Hasil dari kegiatan ini ialah adanya peningkatan pemapahan guru akan langkah-langkah penegmbangan bahan ajar, adanya perbaikan bahan ajar Bahasa Inggris berbasis ESP dan adanya peningkatan motivasi guru untuk membuat buku ajar.

Abstract

This study was focused on the progressive in increasing the quality of students’ vocabulary mastery based on the specific tpics such as color, type of food and beverage, human body, and family members. The material was conveyed through the implementation of Active Learning in the first Grade students of SDN Mulyasari 1, Bandung. This research was conducted into two cycles. The results obtained in the first activity cycle consisted of the teachers’ activities in implementing active learning was about 80% and the amount of class athmosphere was 65.25%. Meanwhile, the evaluation of student learning activities on the assignment sheet reached the average 7.74, 8.78 formative test, and analysis of the vocabulary teaching reached 75%. Meanwhile, in the second cycle, the results obtained by teachers’ activity was 90% and 89.25% for class atmosphere. The average value obtained by students during the assignment sheet is 8.06, the average value of formative test reached 8.96, and the analysis of vocabulary teaching was 85%. Based on the results above, it was clear that the implementation of active learning in mastering English vocabulary would help students in remembering or even mastering that vocabulary. This achievement was inseparable from the use of instructional media and attractive teaching methods for learners.

Abstract

The English Learning Oasis or Taman Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris (TPBI) program was a community service committed to providing free English courses to students of Madrasah Diniyah Takmiliyah (MDT) or an islamic enrichment school. This community service was given to the 4th-grade students of MDT Al Mujahidin, one of MDTs in Cikunir, Singaparna, Tasikmalaya Regency. Most of the students do not receive English lessons at their school. The program aimed to improve these MDT students’ interest and skills in English. In this English course, they learned four language skills; listening, reading, speaking, and writing. The teaching team for this course consisted of students majoring in English Education Department of Universitas Perjuangan Tasikmalaya. This community service was executed in seven stages; needs analysis, pretest, syllabus design, lesson planning, dissemination of the lesson plan, implementation of the English course, and evaluation (posttest and perception survey). This English course yielded positive results in two areas. First, this English course was proven to increase students English learning outcomes. It can be seen from the average score of posttest (88) which was higher than that of pretest (53,59). Second, the students developed positive attitudes and interest in English. The initial survey indicated that 16% of the students did not desire an English course while the final survey revealed that 100% of the students wish for the continued implementation of the English course.

Abstract

Gender representation plays a significant role in shaping social norms and perception, especially in education. The study  examines whether gender is represented equally and how this representation aligns with the gender equality principles promoted by the Merdeka Curriculum. This study investigates gender representation in the English for Nusantara 7th-grade textbook, focusing on five dimensions: visual and textual gender visibility, topic dominance, occupational and leisure activities, and the use of gender-neutral language, based on Hamdan’s (2008) framework. The research found that the textbook offers a balanced gender representation in some aspects, while others still require improvement. Male characters were slightly more dominant in illustrations, while female characters led in topics and occupational mentions. The use of inclusive language was positively noted. The findings indicate a relatively balanced gender portrayal, yet subtle patterns of traditional bias remain. These insights contribute to the broader discourse on inclusive education and may guide curriculum developers, educators, and policymakers in improving the gender sensitivity of future textbooks and learning materials.

Abstract

Mastering listening comprehension remains a significant challenge for EFL university students. This study aimed to identify the factors affecting the mastery of listening comprehension among these students. A survey design was employed, involving English Education Department students from the classes of 2020–2023. The data collection methods used were closed-ended questionnaires, open-ended questionnaires, and semi-structured interviews. The findings revealed several factors affecting students' listening comprehension, categorized into four main areas: listening content, speakers, physical setting, and listeners. Listening content emerged as the most influential factor, with unfamiliar vocabulary, audio quality, and speech rate presenting significant challenges. Other notable factors included pronunciation and accent variations, environmental distractions, and students' motivation and proficiency levels. They suggest that teachers and students should collaboratively identify learning strategies tailored to address specific challenges in listening comprehension. Furthermore, the study underscores the importance of carefully selecting listening materials that align with students' proficiency levels, particularly in terms of vocabulary. Finally, the findings indicate a need for strategies to enhance student motivation and encourage regular listening practice. This research contributes to our understanding of the complexities involved in EFL listening comprehension and provides valuable insights for improving teaching and learning strategies in this critical language skill.

Abstract

Program pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini dilaksanakan untuk menjawab kebutuhan Madrasah Diniyah Takmiliyah Al-Khoeriyyah yang terletak di Desa Linggaraja, sebuah daerah 3T (tertinggal, terdepan, dan terluar) yang memiliki keterbatasan akses terhadap pendidikan Bahasa Inggris yang berkualitas. Permasalahan utama yang dihadapi mitra adalah tidak adanya pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris akibat keterbatasan kurikulum dan kurangnya tenaga pengajar yang kompeten. Para orang tua mengungkapkan kekhawatiran mereka terhadap kesulitan anak-anak dalam mengikuti pelajaran Bahasa Inggris di jenjang pendidikan yang lebih tinggi. Untuk mengatasi hal tersebut, program ini bertujuan mengembangkan modul pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris yang terintegrasi dengan kurikulum Bahasa Arab yang sudah ada, dengan menerapkan delapan prinsip The-C Wheel: konteks, keterkaitan, koherensi, tantangan, rasa ingin tahu, kepedulian, komunitas, dan kreativitas. Metode pelaksanaan mencakup analisis lembaga, pengembangan modul berbasis materi Bahasa Arab sehari-hari, pelatihan guru menggunakan Google Translate, pengajaran di kelas oleh tim pengabdi, serta simulasi pengajaran oleh guru. Hasil menunjukkan peningkatan keterlibatan guru, antusiasme siswa yang lebih tinggi, dan terciptanya modul Bahasa Inggris yang telah memiliki hak cipta. Kesimpulannya, program ini berhasil meningkatkan pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris dalam lingkungan pendidikan berbasis agama dan berpotensi menjadi model yang dapat diterapkan di lembaga serupa di daerah pedesaan.

Abstract

Perubahan Kurikulum membuat mata pelajaran Bahasa Inggris di Sekolah Dasar berubah dari muatan lokal menjadi program ektrakurikuler. Berdasarkan data pra-observasi, di Kecamatan Ciamis pengajaran Bahasa Inggris mengalami beberapa kendala seperti kualifikasi guru yang bukan Sarjana Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris, pengunaan teknik serta metode mengajar Bahasa Inggris yang monoton dan menjenuhkan, kurangnya sumber ajar, serta tidak adanya pelatihan dan pembinaan pengajaran Bahasa Inggris bagi pembelajar anak. Melihat berbagai permasalahan tersebut maka penulis melakukan pengabdian kepada masyarakat dengan memberikan pelatihan pengajaran Bahasa Inggris dan Forum Group Discussion (FGD) bagi guru-guru Sekolah Dasar di Kecamatan Ciamis. Hasil pengabdian ini menunjukan bahwa guru memiliki motivasi yang baik dalam meningkatkan kompetensi mereka dalam pengajaran Bahasa Inggris, pemahaman mereka terhadap karakteristik pembelajar anak juga meningkat, serta adanya peningkatan kemampuan guru untuk menciptakan pengajaran yang bermakna dan menyenangkan.Kata kunci: Pengajaran, Bahasa Inggris, Sekolah Dasar Socialization of English for Young Learners (EYL) for Elementary School Teachers in Cluster II Ciamis Kecamatan District ABSTRACTThe change of curriculum makes English subjects in Elementary School move from local content to the extracurricular program. Based on pre-observation data, there are some obstacles face by the teacher in teaching English to young learners in Ciamis. Those are the unqualified English teachers, the monotonous of teaching techniques and methods, the lack of using teaching sources, and the unavailable of EYL workshops. Therefore, to solve those problems the author conducted a community service in the form of the EYL workshop and FGD.  The community service makes the teachers' motivation to improve their competency in English language teaching increase. Besides, their understanding of the characteristics of children and their ability to create meaningful and interesting teaching also increase.Keywords: Teaching, English, Elemntary School

Abstract

ABSTRAKPenelitian ini mengkaji faktor-faktor intrinsik dan ekstrinsik utama yang memengaruhi motivasi siswa sekolah menengah dalam belajar bahasa Inggris di kelas EFL di Indonesia. Meskipun bahasa Inggris memiliki peran global yang penting, banyak siswa mengalami kesulitan dalam motivasi. Penelitian ini bertujuan mengidentifikasi pengaruh-pengaruh motivasi tersebut dengan menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif deskriptif. Penelitian ini menggunakan metodologi penelitian kualitatif dengan desain survei. Data dikumpulkan dari 99 siswa melalui kuesioner skala Likert 20 item dan dari 6 siswa melalui wawancara mendalam. Analisis dilakukan dengan perhitungan persentase. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa faktor intrinsik seperti pengembangan diri, peningkatan bahasa, dan pemahaman budaya berkontribusi pada motivasi, meskipun kepercayaan diri siswa masih rendah. Faktor ekstrinsik seperti ambisi karier, tujuan pendidikan, dan harapan sosial juga berperan signifikan. Faktor-faktor ini saling berinteraksi, meningkatkan motivasi jika didukung, namun menurun jika tidak. Penelitian ini berimplikasi pada pentingnya guru meningkatkan motivasi siswa melalui penumbuhan minat, penguatan kepercayaan diri, serta pengaitan pembelajaran dengan tujuan dan nilai pribadi siswa.Kata Kunci: motivasi, faktor intrinsik, faktor ekstrinsik, pembelajaran bahasa Inggris, EFLABSTRACTThis study investigates key intrinsic and extrinsic factors affecting secondary school students' motivation to learn English in Indonesian EFL classrooms. Despite English's global importance, many students struggle with motivation. The research aims to identify these motivational influences using a descriptive qualitative approach. This study employed a qualitative research methodology with a survey design. Data were collected from 99 students via a 20-item Likert-scale questionnaire and from 6 students through in-depth interviews. Analysis involved percentage calculations. The results of the study indicate that intrinsic factors such as self-development, language improvement, and cultural understanding contribute to motivation, although students' confidence remains low. Extrinsic factors including career ambitions, educational goals, and social expectations also play a significant role. These factors interact, enhancing motivation when supported but declining otherwise. This study implies the importance of enhancing students’ motivation by fostering interest, strengthening self-confidence, and linking learning to their personal goals and values.Keywords: English as a foreign language (EFL) classroom, intrinsic, extrinsic, motivation
