Abstract

AbstractThe prominent role of textbooks as a learning media is frequently used by educators and learners alike to achieve specific learning objectives. By the standards set forth by the National Education Standards Agency (BSNP), books are deemed effective if they meet four criteria: content, presentation, language, and graphics. The elements identified in the study of multimodal discourse within semiotic systems: linguistic, visual, audio, gestural, and spatial modalities. The combination of two or more semiotic systems is defined as multimodal discourse; it facilitates learners' cognitive and creative development. This article explores the semiotic system potential by Anstey and Bull as textbook evaluation to meet the meaning-making in the EFL textbook, "English for Nusantara," published by the Ministry of Education and Culture of Indonesia. The objective of this research is to examine the concept of multimodal discourse as defined within the theoretical framework of Anstey and Bull's semiotic system theory. The design of this study was descriptive qualitative research with content analysis. The findings show that five different modes were used graded; visual 32%, gestural 23,9%, linguistics 22%, spatial 16,6%, and audio 5,4%. The textbook met the criteria for a quality educational resource, offering valuable cognitive implications for the user through its incorporation of multimodal text. It confirmed the importance of the semiotics system's potential modes in constructing meaning for both learners and educators. The meaning categorization involves: fostering the development of meaningful character traits, creating a sense of unity amidst the diversity of Pancasila, encouraging self-love, and cultivating heightened environmental awareness. Keywords: meaning-making, mode, semiotic system, textbook

Abstract

The English Learning Oasis or Taman Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris (TPBI) program was a community service committed to providing free English courses to students of Madrasah Diniyah Takmiliyah (MDT) or an islamic enrichment school. This community service was given to the 4th-grade students of MDT Al Mujahidin, one of MDTs in Cikunir, Singaparna, Tasikmalaya Regency. Most of the students do not receive English lessons at their school. The program aimed to improve these MDT students’ interest and skills in English. In this English course, they learned four language skills; listening, reading, speaking, and writing. The teaching team for this course consisted of students majoring in English Education Department of Universitas Perjuangan Tasikmalaya. This community service was executed in seven stages; needs analysis, pretest, syllabus design, lesson planning, dissemination of the lesson plan, implementation of the English course, and evaluation (posttest and perception survey). This English course yielded positive results in two areas. First, this English course was proven to increase students English learning outcomes. It can be seen from the average score of posttest (88) which was higher than that of pretest (53,59). Second, the students developed positive attitudes and interest in English. The initial survey indicated that 16% of the students did not desire an English course while the final survey revealed that 100% of the students wish for the continued implementation of the English course.

Abstract

Gender representation plays a significant role in shaping social norms and perception, especially in education. The study  examines whether gender is represented equally and how this representation aligns with the gender equality principles promoted by the Merdeka Curriculum. This study investigates gender representation in the English for Nusantara 7th-grade textbook, focusing on five dimensions: visual and textual gender visibility, topic dominance, occupational and leisure activities, and the use of gender-neutral language, based on Hamdan’s (2008) framework. The research found that the textbook offers a balanced gender representation in some aspects, while others still require improvement. Male characters were slightly more dominant in illustrations, while female characters led in topics and occupational mentions. The use of inclusive language was positively noted. The findings indicate a relatively balanced gender portrayal, yet subtle patterns of traditional bias remain. These insights contribute to the broader discourse on inclusive education and may guide curriculum developers, educators, and policymakers in improving the gender sensitivity of future textbooks and learning materials.

Abstract

Kata Kunci: motivasi, faktor intrinsik, faktor ekstrinsik, pembelajaran bahasa Inggris, EFLABSTRACTThis study investigates key intrinsic and extrinsic factors affecting secondary school students' motivation to learn English in Indonesian EFL classrooms. Despite English's global importance, many students struggle with motivation. The research aims to identify these motivational influences using a descriptive qualitative approach. This study employed a qualitative research methodology with a survey design. Data were collected from 99 students via a 20-item Likert-scale questionnaire and from 6 students through in-depth interviews. Analysis involved percentage calculations. The results of the study indicate that intrinsic factors such as self-development, language improvement, and cultural understanding contribute to motivation, although students' confidence remains low. Extrinsic factors including career ambitions, educational goals, and social expectations also play a significant role. These factors interact, enhancing motivation when supported but declining otherwise. This study implies the importance of enhancing students’ motivation by fostering interest, strengthening self-confidence, and linking learning to their personal goals and values. Keywords: English as a foreign language (EFL) classroom, intrinsic, extrinsic, motivation

Abstract

Communication plays an essential role in transporting messages, feelings, ideas, or even an influence. They are transmitted both verbally and non-verbally. This study elaborates on the use of speech acts in campaign advertising, specifically on billboards and posters as a means of conveying a candidate’s message through written communication in non-English languages in Tasikmalaya City. The capacity to use language in an assortment of settings while reflecting the relationship between the speakers and social cultural context of the situation is known as pragmatic competence. This research is a descriptive qualitative study; data analysis was conducted in two steps. firstly, it was carried out through a translation process which was done by English Education Department students in varied study grades; furthermore, the translation result was analyzed by the researcher to seek Chesterman's translation strategy through the lens of Pragmatics. The writer applied Miles and Huberman's data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing to analyse the data. The data reduction categorized the message into several categories of illocutionary acts using the translations that have been organized, then it was continued by classifying them according to Searle’s theory of speech act. This study shows that coherence change at 42.3%, trans editing at 23.1%, explicit change at 19.2%, cultural filtering at 11.5%, and illocutionary change at 3.8%; those reflect the translation strategy usage. Furthermore, the illocutionary act shows assertive 58.3%, directive 25%, and commissive 16.7%. Moreover, the pedagogical implications of the analysis are leading students to the awareness that translation can be done using various strategies, enhancing students’ understanding of translation strategies, and sharpening students’ critical thinking.

Abstract

This study aims to develop valid, practical, and effective ethnoliteracy-based digital teaching materials for imaginative story learning in elementary schools. The research employed a Research and Development (R&D) method using the 4D Thiagarajan model, consisting of the definition, design, development, and dissemination stages. The participants included fifth-grade students in Tasikmalaya Regency, teachers, and expert validators in language, content, and media. Data were collected through tests, questionnaires, interviews, observations, and documentation, and analyzed using qualitative and quantitative techniques. The needs analysis indicated a strong demand for digital teaching materials among teachers (94.7%) and high student interest in digital media (92.6%) and visual illustrations (90.8%). Expert validation scores demonstrated that the product was feasible in terms of language (3.4), content (3.4), and highly feasible in media design (3.6). Field trials showed that the digital teaching materials were practical, engaging, and enhanced students’ imaginative story-writing abilities and ethnoliteracy understanding. The effectiveness was reflected in the improvement of students’ average scores from 70.34 (pretest) to 81.45 (posttest), with an average N-Gain of 0.40 categorized as moderate. Overall, the ethnoliteracy-based digital teaching materials are feasible and effective as an innovative resource for Indonesian language learning and contribute to strengthening students’ cultural identity in the digital era.
