Abstract

This study was a pre-experimental research. The purposes of this study were to find out the effectiveness and the significance of mind mapping for teaching English vocabulary. This study was conducted in SMP Negeri 3 Sungai Kakap in academic year 2012/2013 where the population was eighth grade students with a total number of 112 students.The data showed the difference result between pre-test and post-test. The average achievement of the students’ pre-test was 46.28 and 86.14 in the post-test. Furthermore, the data showed there was significant difference of the score where the t-test result 31.88. It showed that the result of t-test was higher than t-table (2.052) at 5% with degree of freedom N-1 (28-1). Therefore, it can be suggested that mind mapping can be an effective technique to teach english vocabulary. This result hopefully would motivate english language teachers to use a mind mapping in teaching English in the classroom.Keywords: The Effectiveness, Mind Mapping, Vocabulary

Abstract

The purposes of this research were to know the perception of students and teacher about task-based language teaching (TBLT), the ways used by the teacher in the implementation of TBLT, and the ways of the students in perceiving and completing a task in the listening class. This case study was conducted at IKIP-PGRI Pontianak where the sample were one teacher and twelve students in the first semester. The techniques of collecting data were interview, observation, and documentation. The data were analyzed by using grounded theory. The research findings showed that: (1) The students and the teacher believed that TBLT helped them in the listening class, it could motivate learners to be more active by using the target language; (2) The teacher could present the instruction clearly and optimally by using spoken and written form; and (3) each student perceived and accomplished the task in different way. Keywords: perception, TBLT, listening  class.

Abstract

Tujuan dari penelitian iniuntuk mengetahui jenis penggunaan code switching yang digunakan oleh mahasiswa program studi pendidikan bahasa inggris dan untuk mengetahui manfaat dari penggunaan code switching tersebut bagi mahasiswa dalam kelas speaking for academic presentation. Penelitian deskriptif qualitative ini dilaksanakan di IKIP-PGRI Pontianak dengan sampel penelitian dari mahasiswa semester empat. Teknik pengumpulan data yang digunakan berupa interview, observasi, dan dokumentasi. Data dianalisis menggunakan langkah yang di sarankan oleh Miles and Huberman di dalam buku Creswell.Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa:(1)Terdapat tiga tipe code switching yang digunakan oleh mahasiswa bahasa inggris IKIP-PGRI Pontianak semester 4 tahun ajaran 2017/2018 yaitu inter-sentential code switching dengan jumlah sebanyak 48 data,intra-sentinental code switchingdimana terdapat 35 data, dan tag switchingdengan perolehan data sebanyak 20; (2) Hasil penelitian juga menunjukkan bahwa terdapat lima fungsi penggunaan code switching didalam kelas yaitu quotations, addressee specification, reiteration, message qualification, dan personalization or objectification.Kata Kunci: analisis, speaking, code switching
