Abstract

Pesanggrahan Krapyak Giriwaya is one of the buildings inherited from Kasunanan Surakarta Hadiningrat built by Sri Susuhunan Pakubuwono X. This building is generally in a well-maintained condition. However, many damages require immediate treatment. This research was carried out to identify damage and recommend appropriate treatment. This research uses a qualitative rationalistic method with a focus on observing physical damage in the buildings. Identification of damage becomes the basis for recommendations and handling strategies for conservation activities. The results of the research show that the Pesanggrahan Krapyak Giriwaya building has important historical, scientific, and cultural value, so it needs to be preserved. The building leaks the roof which causes damage to the wood, walls, and floor. Handling of building damage is done by replacement or repair using materials that are suitable or close to the original materials. Apart from that, damage management is carried out through a combination of the use of natural ingredients and chemicals.

Abstract

Surabaya has experienced a long historical journey, starting from the influence of the Javanese Kingdoms, Singasari, successively under the rule of the Majapahit, Demak, Pajang, and then finally the Islamic Mataram. The new chapter of Surabaya was under foreign influence when the Dutch came to the beginning of the 17th Century. The impact of the Dutch colonialism was the large number of Indische buildings in the Old City area of Surabaya. This arcticle explains the research result based on a qualitative method and inductive reasoning. towards the distribution of Indische buildings in the City of Surabaya.  It is divided into the Old Surabaya and New Surabaya cluster areas. Apart from the condition of most of the Indische buildings today that has undergone many changes, several Indische buildings that still exist today are considers as city landmarks of Surabaya. Eventhough, along with the development of the city of Surabaya, many Indische buildings have been dismantled and replaced with modern buildings.

Abstract

This article presents an architectural and epigraphical study of several objects recovered from the Central Javanese temple site of Gunung Sari. The site has yielded unique cylindrical stone objects, some of which bear short inscriptions in Old Javanese language indicating the directions of space. Based on architectural arguments, we conclude that the temple was a Åšaiva monument. The cylindrical objects were most likely placed originally in the floor of the platform of the temple, where they covered foundation deposits placed during the construction of the temple in connection with the ritual preparation of the ground plan. Although objects exactly identical in shape have thus far not been discovered in Java, objects that had different shapes but similar ritual functions can be identified at other more or less contemporary sites in the region. Some of these bear inscriptions. The inscriptions of Candi Gunung Sari are, however, unique in that they offer by far the oldest (nearly) complete system of eight directions of space expressed in Javanese terms.

Abstract

The culture that emerged in Hindu-Buddha period in ancient Indonesia was always related to religious concepts. Therefore, anything being produced at that time should reflect the harmony between micro and macrocosms, or in other words, between human and deities worlds. This could be exemplified by temples and royal palaces from that period. Temples symbolized Mahameru, the mountain regarded as the center of universe; whilst royal palaces as microcosm should have elements and arrangements in favour with the afore mentioned macrocosm.

Abstract

From the beginning of its establishment, Majapahit could not escape the actions of the political elites who tried to break the unity of the Majapahit kingdom. This is due to their dissatisfaction with the king's leadership or dissatisfaction with the position they received. When Raden Wijaya had become king he was abandoned by some of his colleagues at the time of facing Jayakatwang and Kubhilai Khan's army. Although they had obtained high positions but some of them were not satisfied with the awards or positions given by the king. Ranggalawe who was not appointed as a patih (duke), was against the king so there was a war called Paranggalawe in 1217 C (1295 AD).

Abstract

A site located in Candi, Menoreh Village, Salaman District, Magelang Regency was looted. The residents call the site as Wurung Temple, because it is considered as an unfinished temple. Several years ago the site, which was located on land belonging to Hadi Prayitno, was excavated by a group of people. The local community did not know their origin and the purpose of the excavation. Only word of mouth got out that their goal was to find treasure. Whether they found it or not, they just left the excavated hole. The site was abandoned after the illegal excavation took place. The land owner did not even know what he was going to do, so that the rice field, which was actually productive, was left without planting anything.

Abstract

In this paper, it is hoped that this does not merely present survey techniques on open sites which may have been discussed by many experts and have been applied to archaeological researches in Indonesia. However, it is also hoped that they will be able to find alternatives to the application of appropriate survey techniques for an archaeological research. For this reason, it is suggested that there are specific themes in archaeological research, so that it is not just artefactual research.

Abstract

At the time when the Hindu kingdoms were still in power in Indonesia, the establishment of sima was often associated with the services that the people of a village had given to their king. To commemorate this event, a sacred building was erected, and the village community concerned was obliged to maintain it. Due to the burden of maintaining the sacred building, the village community was exempted from the obligation to pay taxes to the king. A building that was recently found in Dukuh Centong, Sawentar Village, Kanigoro District, Blitar Regency is possibly an example of a building that is a memorial to an important event during the Majapahit era. Although the building is not very big, it is very interesting to study, especially if it is related to its historical background and rare architectural form.
