Abstract

This study aims to reveal patterns of stimulation and adaptation in coffee shops in Yogyakarta. The concept of stimulation and adaptation is a concept that moves humans to organize themselves in space, so that the use of space is maximized and of high quality. A coffee shop is one of the public facilities that is growing and in demand by young people in the city of Yogyakarta. The interior and exterior design of the coffee shop influences visitors in using the space. Each design element becomes a stimulus that plays a role in the adaptation process of visitors. Thus, the concept of stimulus and adaptation occurring in coffee shops is important to disclose as input for the design of public facilities. The research used qualitative research methods, namely behavioral observation and literature study. The study compared two coffee shops to find patterns of stimulus and adaptation in coffee shops as a youth public facility. The literature review method is used to find standard areas for socializing and learning. The results found that stimulation and adaptation in two coffee shops in Yogyakarta occurred in the interior and exterior spaces. The seating layout is an important stimulus and is supported by other design elements.

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to describe the uniqueness of spatial arrangement of Wajo traditional villages in Nagekeo district, which is designed based on local wisdom. Traditional settlements in Indonesia have a spatial concept that has the potential to become the basis of contemporary architecture. The spatial arrangement of traditional settlements of Wajo village is interesting to disclose the principle and its constituent elements as one of Indonesia's architectural properties that maintaining local culture. The problem under study is the dominant (important) aspects underlying the spatial concept of traditional village settlements Wajo custom. The method used is to study literature in various writings on the spatial layout phenomenon of traditional settlements, as well as the elaboration of physical theories (structuring principles) and non-physical theories (identification and orientation) to find the dominant relationships that form the spatial layout of the Wajo traditional village. The analysis is based on Schulz's phenomenological paradigm and Salura's design principle theory. From the results of the analysis, it was found that the spatial concept of the Wajo traditional village is a relation of the perception of the surrounding environment, site, shape, figure and natural-cultural cycle influenced by dominant factors namely the top-down orientation (sacred and profane) and physical adaptation of the topography of the place, as well as elements binding (datum) in the form of tribal order (the existence of mosalaki), cultural symbols (customs), and spiritual (ancestors). DOI: https://doi.org/10.26905/lw.v12i1.3581

Abstract

The Research based on an intercultural contact approach is significant to study the traditional settlements and to support the preservation of local culture-based architecture in Indonesia. The Kaenbaun village inhabited by Dawan tribes is a vernacular village and organized based on local resources (physical-natural, technological, economic, social and cultural) fully. It is believed that even the ancestral spirits were involved in structuring settlements and the process of village life. The Kaenbaun's culture is a mixture of Dawan culture and the faith and dogma of the Catholic church which form Kaenbaun's wisdom and underlie the behavior of citizens and the spatial layout of Kaenbaun's settlements. The study was conducted by using field observation guided by Husserlian phenomenological paradigm. The data were processed based on inductive-qualitative thinking by using the field notes taken from field research activities in 2004 to 2010. Data were also supplemented by actual information gathered in 2010-2018 through digital media. The result showed that the local wisdom of Kaenbaun (Kaenbaun's wisdom) emerged from the Dawan culture with the acculturation of Catholic faith and dogma becoming a guideline for the behavior of citizens and the spatial structure of the Kaenbaun village settlement architecture. The Kaenbaun's wisdom is the concept of Kaenbaun's ideal life where humans live in harmony with their fellow humans, harmony with nature, blessed by their ancestors and blessed by God. © 2019 Yohanes Djarot Purbadi, Achmad Djunaedi, Sudaryono

Abstract

This research aimed to explain the conceptual persistence of spatial transformations in the Joglo house nDalem Puspodiningratan based on Hamemayu Hayuning Bawana philosophy. This philosophy is the public wisdom directed towards maintaining a harmonious relationship between humans and each other, nature, and God. This philosophy is applied in several dimensions of the Javanese life such as the architecture which is meaningfully designed. Moreover, the Hamemayu Hayuning Bawana is observed to be playing an important role in the spatial configuration of the traditional Joglo house. It is important to note that nDalem Puspodiningratan is a traditional Joglo house with a well-maintained condition and which undergoes a spatial transformation due to the inhabitation of alternating families. This research was, therefore, conducted using visual observation and documentation, literature review, interviews, graphic method, and comparison to explore the Joglo transformation data and background. The results showed the Joglo nDalem Puspodiningratan persisted in preserving the Hamemayu Hayuning Bawana's philosophical principles despite the spatial transformations. Meanwhile, the transformations discovered to be violating the traditional house rules are believed to be reducing the Hamemayu Hayuning Bawana practice while those observed to be following the rules maintain the practice. There is a need for further research on the transformations of traditional buildings in other cases of the traditional Javanese architecture to show the existence of spatial transformations and conceptual persistence related to Hamemayu Hayuning Bawana.

Abstract

The Sumba house is characterized by traditional architecture on the island of Sumba, some of which have changed from their original characteristics and some others have retained their original characteristics. If you compare the Sumba houses in praingu (traditional villages) with the houses of Sumbanese people in cities or along roads that are characterized by modern or contemporary houses, the differences in characteristics are easy to see. It is different if the houses with Sumba architectural characteristics outside Praingu are compared to those inside Praingu. There are interesting things to say. They look the same, but have significant differences. This paper aims to describe the continuity and different of Sumba houses with traditional Sumba architecture in Anakalang compared to the original Sumba houses located in Praingu Galubakul. The focus of this research is to look at the continuity and differences in the form-function-meaning aspects of traditional Sumba houses within praingu and outside praingu. This research was produced through a qualitative research process based on a phenomenological-husserlian approach, using field observation and in-depth interview methods. The case is the Sumba house in Anakalang which is outside Praingu (Galubakul) and the owner is bound by Sumba culture. There is continuity and different in the Sumba house in Anakalang. Form and meaning continue to be continuous, but there is a change in the function of the building. Continuity occurs due to aspects of adherence to tradition, while changes occur in the addition of new functions, changing functions and deleting functions due to the establishment of a modern lifestyle. The religious (spiritual) aspect of the homeowners related to the Marapu belief and fear of praingu integration is a determining factor for the continuity of the form and meaning of the architecture of the Sumba house. Modern lifestyle is a determining factor in changing the center room from the status of a sacred space to a profane space.
