Abstract

The rapid population growth and limited land on earth make high-rise residential buildings, especially in urban areas, inevitable. However, from several studies and analyses, many of these vertical living did not / have not fulfilled social sustainability aspects, which are essential aspects of the three spheres of sustainability concepts, namely social sustainability, economic sustainability, and environmental sustainability. Therefore this study will emphasize creating sustainable social space in high-rise residential buildings but will focus more on Corridor.Corridor as a definite area and always exist in high-rise residential building, have a high frequency always to be used and passed by residents as the main circulation path from and to the unit of residence. Therefore Corridor has great potential to influence the lives and way of life of the residents. Therefore, if we as architects can propose a design intervention by including consideration of the rules of the social space parameters, the Corridor can be an ideal sustainable social space that is needed and can be positively beneficial for residents, so that in the long run, it can help achieve Sustainable Architecture.

Abstract

Abstract

Title: The Permanence of Sabilal Muhtadin Great Mosque Area   The area of the Great Mosque of Sabilal Muhtadin Banjarmasin was originally the location of "Fort Van Tatas," namely the fortress of Tatas Island in the Dutch East Indies era. This area is the first layer of the development of Banjarmasin City, starting with the Tatas Fortress with a defense function. In its development, the area underwent several changes in function and form until the era of the Republic of Indonesia. In this area, the Great Mosque of Sabilal Muhtadin was established as an Islamic religious center in Banjarmasin. Given the significance of the area as the first layer of the city, the research aims to provide an overview of the morphology of the Sabilal Region from time to time. Next, use the city morphology approach to identify the permanence of the elements forming the area, including what elements remain, the elements that change, and the elements that are missing. Synchronic and diachronic analysis methods are carried out on urban tissue areas, including observed elements: roads, open spaces, natural elements and plots-blocks, and buildings. The analysis results show that the area's morphology has changed the urban tissue character of the area from a center of defense to a center of religion. In comparison, some of the area's elements have changed and disappeared, such as elements of the fort and elements of roads, and rivers.

Abstract

Title: Street Front Typology Evaluation Method; The Case of Kembang Jepun, Surabaya   The Kembang Jepun district is one of the old districts of Surabaya. Located on the banks of the Kalimas River, Kembang Jepun determines the pulse of trading activity in Surabaya. As a vital district in Surabaya, the district needs to maintain its image and vitality in its corridors. The quality of the street front is all the things and activities that occur in city corridors, between buildings and roads. The street front is one of the main factors in determining the image and life of the district. This study aims to determine the street front quality in Kembang Jepun, to identify the parts of the district with the best and worst quality of the street front, and to classify the determining elements of the quality of the street front. This study uses descriptive qualitative method research. The analysis found that the Kembang Jepun district is classified as a district with a low skewed street front quality. Jalan Kembang Jepun corridor, an arterial road for Surabaya City with high connectivity, was found to have the best street front quality. Then, Jalan Kalimas Utara Corridor facing Kalimas River, is the road with the worst street front quality. The determining elements of the quality of the street front include the quality of the building facade, the presence of pedestrian paths, activities in front of the building, building openings, and road connectivity.

Abstract

This study aims to reflect and expand the notion of modularity in architectural design methods. The discussion about modular architecture is certainly familiar across architectural discourse; where its universality has been repeatedly challenged by the post-modern movement. The study aims to unpack and rethink the method and significance of modularity, not only as a means of repetition but as a contextual design response. The study generate reflection towards two lodge architecture design projects. The architecture of lodge provides complexities with regard to various programmatic needs, temporal occupation, quick construction processes, and often deep connection to the surrounding environment. This study examines four reflective concepts which expand the idea and method of modularity in architecture. First, the roof modules in lodge architecture promotes efficient spatial programs. Secondly, the use of modularity allows parallel operation of the building and the construction process. Thirdly, modularity enables construction of architecture as parts constructing the whole, creating connection between spatial scales. Fourth, modularity constructs the inside and outside experience, providing  connection with environmental context. This study offers a new perspective on repositioning and expanding modularity, not only as a means of repetition but also as a form of contextual design thinking.
