Abstract

This article aims to explain the political economy of the Internet and its relevance to democracy. Thiselaboration is an alternative to the utopian and dystopian techno-determinist approaches in viewing the relationshipbetween the Internet and democracy. From a political economy perspective, the Internet and its various derivatives, such as search engines, social media, e-commerce, and other platforms, are not only networks and communicationplatforms, but also instruments of commodification, surveillance, and control by global digital companies that basedin the United States of America to millions of users around the world. From the results of the literature study andconceptual analysis of the processes of commodification, surveillance, and control, the authors conclude that claimsabout the democratic characteristics of the Internet are ideological in nature. The claim hides the economic andpolitical interests of the United States and its global digital companies. What the United States and these globaldigital companies have done has stripped away basic democratic values, such as respect for and protection ofhuman rights, freedom, and equality. From that conclusion, the authors suggest the need for openness andmultilateral globalism in Internet governance so that it is more friendly towards democratic values.Key words: Commodification, democracy, Internet, political economy, surveillance

Abstract

This article explains the conceptual framework of technological determinism theory. The rapid development oftechnology in the last few decades has revived the classic controversy about the relationship between technologyand society. One of the positions defended in the controversy is technological determinism. Through a qualitativeapproach and literature study methods and descriptive analysis, this theory is reviewed in this article. The data inthis study was obtained from national and international books and journals. This study found that technologicaldeterminism theory was only discovered in the 20th century. This theory believes that technology is an independententity that influences the transformation of society. However, by constructivists, this belief is consideredahistorical, reductionist and simplistic. The theory of technological determinism also turns out to have severalvariants, namely hard technological determinism and soft technological determinism. The two variants emergedas a result of different emphasis on the degree of influence of technology on society. Different interpretations oftechnological determinism have also emerged. The three interpretations are normative, nomological, andunintended consequences interpretations. Finally, the author suggests the need for a balanced reading of therelationship between technology and society. Future research needs to critically examine and question the claimsof technological determinism.

Abstract

This study aims to explain the relationship between politics and technology by specifically discussing how the Internet supports and hinders democracy. This conceptual elaboration was prompted by recent controversies about the democratic power of the Internet. The controversy is framed in three perspectives, namely the perspective of utopia, dystopia, and syntopia. By using a qualitative approach and constructivist paradigm as well as literature studies, this paper argues that the three perspectives are reductionist and simplistic. Based on their technological determinism approach, they ignore subject agency and socio-cultural context in framing the relationship between the Internet and democracy. This paper offers holistic reading that the success and failure of technology adoption in democratic practice is a product of the organic interaction between technology and subject agency as well as social, political, and cultural contexts.

Abstract

It should be realized that Indonesian is in a situation of democratic decline. The democracy index in Indonesia continues to decline every year. This decline can be seen from two facts, which are, first, the weakening of civil society criticism in the public sphere, and second, the function of government which tends to deny the legitimacy of opponents because it wants to maintain power. This research aims to examine the relevance of Jean Jacques Rousseau’s “Back to Nature” ideas in the context of democracy in Indonesia. This article used a qualitative-descriptive method with a literature study approach. Based on the research results, it was found that Rousseau’s “Back to Nature” idea was a good guide for the Indonesian citizens in restoring the nation’s democratic spirit. Indonesian democracy must “Back to Nature”. This does not mean that Indonesian citizens have to return to primitive times. “Back to Nature” means returning to the authentic meaning of democracy. This is done by forming a solid pro-democracy alliance or coalition. This alliance movement must be carried out in the political, institutional and social arenas at the same time. Indonesian democracy will return to its original state and popular sovereignty can be re-established if these three elements of this nation can work together to build democracy and repress authoritarianism within the nation’s democratic body.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the transformation, challenges, and opportunities of digital marketing strategies in the era of social media domination. Based on the phenomenon of increasing connectivity and digital participation among Indonesians, with internet penetration reaching 80.66%, this study highlights how changes in consumer behavior and technological advances are shifting the marketing paradigm from product-centric to human-centric. The method used is a qualitative-conceptual approach based on literature studies with content analysis of various recent scientific literature in the fields of digital marketing, consumer behavior, and information technology. The results show that digital marketing strategies now require the integration of artificial intelligence and human empathy through the five pillars of Marketing 5.0: data-driven, predictive, contextual, augmented, and agile marketing. The main challenges include information fatigue, data trust crisis, and digital literacy gap, while the greatest opportunities lie in the integration of online-offline strategies, storytelling based on human values, and consumer collaboration in brand value creation. This research concludes that the success of digital marketing does not only depend on technology, but on a company's ability to humanize technology. Inclusive digital literacy and public data ethics are needed to ensure that digital transformation runs smoothly.
